Shiver99: Igbos was not an agricultural society, an agricultural society means they had cows to plough the fields and created Sophisticated farm tools to farm. There is no evidence of that in pre colonial or in present day igbo society. The igbos were Horticultural society that use simple tools like cutlass, hoe, rake and other simple tools to farm, though they were wealthier than the hunter gatherers but were in the same stages of development with the pastoralists. On your point of land encroachment, land encroachment was not only a pastoralists problem but also was very common in the horticultural society which always lead to land grabbing or inter ethnic conflict that still persists till today. |

siofra: Sorry to say this is trash. The jews were never an hunter gathering group, they were a nomadic groups, even abraham, Joseph were all nomadic and pastoral people that owns cows, goat and sheep, they were moving for one place to another. So what made Abraham and lot go their seperate ways, wasn't it because of green lands and water for their cattle. Jesus christ was from the pastoral linage. Semetic people generally are pastoralists and not farmers even till today. |

The unique egalitarian and democratic style not only inspired independence but an unshakeably high sense of self-esteem. Igbos saw no one as their superior. If there were qualities about you that they admired, they simply sought to emulate it and eventually overtake you. This was a shock for more retrogressive mindsets as we can see throughout the course of Nigerian history, as well as Igbo interactions with other African groups. The thought of a people who had no mental barriers that hindered their pursuit of success was frightening. While in Igbo society this quality was admired, in feudal cultures, this sort of progressive behaviour could damage the very fabric of their societies. 8 Likes 1 Share |

An excerpt from a European traveller: "True democrats, no one was better than themselves but yet they were somehow better than anyone else. This self-assurance was sometimes a little frightening. The Ibo men and women are so continually in the right and so busy proving that everyone else is in the wrong. They want to learn from us but only such things as may be materially productive as soon as possible. They tolerate us because they need us. They do not look upon us resentfully as conquerors but complacently as stepping-stones. What will happen when they can, or think they can mount it alone and no further use of the stepping-stones, no one can tell." . thebosstrevor1: Jesus Christ was from a pastoralist society does not mean he will behave like them. There are still people in the farmer, pastoralist and hunter gatherer societies who tend to deviate. |

siofra: It has been proven times without numbers that nsibidi isnt a writing language but a pictogram which is very commonly used among secret societies in the calabar region, it is indigenous to the efik people. The NT type is not a personality traite only common among hunter gatherers but also among every human society. The hunter gatherers were mostly using crude tools like arrow and bow and also their bare hands to get food. Every human society have the hunter gathering trait in them because that is the first stages of development without which some of the richer countries in the world wont be rich thanks to tha traits. My point is simple, the African society generally have failed to leave the hunter gathering stage of civilization |

thebosstrevor1:He is tell that the Igbo society has been one whose sociopolitical and economic system is hinged on a philosophy that promotes individual efforts, individual rights, individual enterprise, individual representation, iondividual association and individual respects. these are the liberal nature about the Igbo people. Any thing you infer outside these are not about the Igbo people and not liberal in nature. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Shiver99: No need to yab them biko just give them fact. Some ancient African civilized culture did not cover put totally in those days. Nubian women and great Queen's moved around topless Ancient cush didn't wear top West african civilized women did not wear top South African women didn't wear top The only African women that wore top those days were north African women.. The Berbers, tuaregs,Arabs and co.Who later introduced there Arab culture to there southern neighbours and arabized them. Women been topless in ancient Africa is not a sign of not bin civilized. The Nubians were the most civilized black Africans those days but there women moved around topless. 3 Likes 1 Share |

reality1010: If the igbo society promotes the individual then why are there igbo unions and igbo monopoly ( commualism) Individualisms does not work with unions of which igbo people are experts in creating to put their society in order and in check. You need to go and understand liberalism philosophy. |

This high self-esteem that characterised the common Igbo person was something that many people outside of Igbo society were unable to understand. Igbos believed that they were a blessed breed and this mindset drove their every action. This was something that they would simply not yield on even under threat or attack of invasion. In the modern Nigerian political arena, this confident mindset is labelled as 'arrogant' while more slave-like and dependent personalities is seen as progressive or sophisticated. thebosstrevor1: Don't be an olodo Eastern Africans did not wear cloth but were the most civilized of all blacks.Eg the Nubians, black kushites, shiluks and co.Those that later wore clothes amongst them were the arabized ones and those that were later defeated by the Axum's. West African women didn't wear cloth but were civilized South African women didn't wear cloth Only north africans wore cloth.which they later introduced to there immediate southern neighbours who spread it down south. Wearing of cloth those days should not be used to measure civilization. The Mayans,Aztec and co were not fully clothed but had one of the best civilization. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Even under the onslaught of British Invaders, armed with vastly superior technology and numerous African allies, Igbos refused to bow. This way of thinking was just fascinating, once again stemming from the fact that they considered themselves a blessed race or chosen by god. ZorGBUooeh: Wearing of clothes is the first thing any civilised nation will do before others. Do you know the meaning of civilization. Aren't you civilised than the tribes not wearing clothes today. How can you write that people who are naked are more civilised than people who were not, it is like writing that the society who invented bicycles are more innovative than the society who invented cars. Is that not confusion and an attempt to distort history |
