chrisooblog: After the spanking by Netherland, a lot of our players hired special coaches and worked extra time to get their sharpness. The discipline was there and also the Spaniards played well. They were a sound side. Remember they demolished the Bulgarians 6-0. At the end, we matched them. I don't think Zubizaretta should be fully blamed for Garba Lawal's goal. It was an unexpected direction and he still did his best to save it. I still believe our determination and concentration was our biggest strength. Even in Atlanta but we lost it after beating Bulgaria. If we continued with that passion, we would have gone a long way. 2 Likes |

chrisooblog: I still am surprised sha. He has been passed over a bunch of times and then the destination is big time. Boston is probably the most decorated franchise in the NBA. Plus the Celtics are already a playoff team. The NBF didn't have anything to do with Hakeem na. If he didn't go to the university of Houston he would never have been as good as he ended up being. We don't even have to do scouting because NBA scouts and agents are all over the world looking for the next big thing. Unless we can make the game of basketball as accessible as the game of football for every child, we will have to continue to depend on America for our talent. Because what happened with Hakeem the Dream was almost fictional. U normally don't get that good at basketball in such a short a time. We don't have to wait until they grow "tall" before they start. Getting them young is the only way to really have a chance. 3 Likes |

I really wish you would take the time re-watch the Spain match on youtube. Their were glaring lapses the Spaniards failed to consistently exploit. Mobi Oparaku wasn't positionally disciplined. I'm surprised they didn't target his area of the pitch more especially after Raul's goal. Actually we beat Bulgaria 1-0 but that was a shadow of the 1994 side that got to the semis. Stoichkov was basically retired the rest aging as well. Sorry but that mistake by Zubby is almost unforgivable. Garba Lawal had no right to score what was just a inshallah semi shot/cross at goal. Passion can only take you so far. Without the right structure it will peter out into nothing. Look at the way a less talented Denmark side handled us in comparison to how Spain played us and you will understand what i'm trying to say. TheGoodJoe: |

chrisooblog: First of all, the Denmark team were underrated but the truth was that it was a hugely talented side. For instance, apart from Finidi George, we had no player of the Calibre of the Laudrup brothers. Is there any keeper we had that would compare to Peter Schmeichel? We had Tactical lapses and I have always insisted the better side lost. It was that game by Spain that made me finally fall for possession based football. Either way, we had Tactical lapses but covered it with genuine hardwork and determination. We also caused the Spaniards loads of problems too. Keep in mind, Bora came in not too long before the tournament. We prepared poorly. However, what saw us through that game was determination and focus. Losing that along the way dismantled us. 3 Likes |

Kog45:Mutiu's goal from setpiece, Lawal's goal GK lack of concentration, Oliseh scored out of nothing. We were outplayed for long period, Spain had the better chances. Hallmark of a fluke victory 2 Likes |

Oga Kog, remember we won the Olympics just 2 years earlier. On paper, the 1998 squad was our best-assembled team ever. Our bench was filled with stars. We lost against Paraguay cos we have already qualified and we played our second team. We defeated both Spain and Bulgaria two very good teams. We outplayed the Danes on every front. Both Kanu and Okocha were squandering one chance after the other. Only someone that watched highlights will tell me that beaten Spain and Bulgaria was fluke. Kog45: 1 Like |
