The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has disclosed the federal government’s intention to create an armed unit of the Federal Fire Service. This unit will be called the “Fire Police,” and their duty would be to provide armed outer cordon during operations.

Mr Aregbesola made the announcement in Jos, Plateau State, at the opening of the National Council on Fire, a statement by the Director of Press, Blessing Lere-Adam, said on Saturday in Abuja.

The latest quest arm the fire service follows similar push by the Federal Road Safety Corps, an outfit simply set up to maintain order and safety on Nigerian roads, to arm its officers with assault weapons.

The statement says that this decision is “part of efforts to address the challenges often faced by firefighters during operations, through mob action and vandalism of firefighting assets in the country”.

A source privy to the deliberations told Peoples Gazette that AK-47 rifles would be among the weapons to be approved for deployment once implementation commences.

At the event, Mr Aregbesola, represented by the interior ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Shuaib Belgore, mentioned that: “the Ministry would initiate the process of repealing the 1963 obsolete Fire Service Act and enactment of a new contemporary, vibrant, and enforceable law, through the instrument of an Executive Bill to be forwarded to the National Assembly for deliberation and eventual passage into law”

Mr Aregbesola added that fire safety management could become a tool for not only national security but also national development as assets protected in the event of fire outbreaks would allow the government to use the country’s “very lean resources” for other development programs instead of reconstructing said assets.

Fire fighters of other countries don't carry arms.(FRSC doesn't need arms too)

They don't need arms, they don't have sufficient gadget for their work yet, they're agitating for arms.

Everything is towards arms, there's more to it

Mobs often attack fire service officials whenever called because they are not able to provide enough water to quench fire. Sometimes, the crowd often block the road instead of making way so that fire trucks can get easy access.

However, Firearms are a little bit extreme to disperse mobs. Tear gas is recommended! Most importantly, the FG should work on ensuring Fire hydrants are installed in most places and ensure there is always water for the fire hydrants. This resolves the problem instead of generating new ones.

This leads to making water available to everyone in a city and not every body digging wells and boreholes. Rather water is provided by the water board of the city where people can pay monthly or some form of payment. It's a win win situation for everyone involved.

But trust the Nigerian government to ever take the backward and extreme approach to resolving problems and creating new or more problems.

Haba na? What na.

Shebi they will just assign police to escort the fire fighters.

Please dony create more problems while trying to solve one. We have not solved the problem of trigger happy force men,You want to add another.

Nigerians sef? Why will you be assaulting firemen who have come to help? Late or early they may come doesnt require any form of assault from you. We dey talk the govt own... we sef too dey violent. how you go begin stone firefighters? If the system works fine, they will always be there ontime.

Very soon nurses, primary and secondary school students go start to carry guns... Anything that wears uniform go bare arms soon.

It's far more better a country is hit by natural disaster than with bad leadership.

War is looming...!!!

Everyone is being armed.

Same way underaged kids are been given guns during war periods.

The sooner you realise it, the better.

Why should a non-existent Nigerian fire service be armed?

May God help us
(While we help ourselves by being smart)
