See, I didn't want to talk initially but I felt some people here are misleading others. The best decision you can ever make in your life is to leave Nigeria. I left in February and I have not had a day of regret. I borrowed money to leave and sold properties and I tell you that I'm almost done repaying.
I don't know what you guys mean by good jobs in Nigeria with the kind of inflation of prices of commodities at the moment. Some talked about bills, but you didn't mention that you will have uninterrupted power and water supply, stable internet connection etc and all of these are pay as you go.
If God gives you the privilege of leaving Naija, please don't hesitate.

Baba only people that don't have better plans for their lives see Nigeria as a paradise.

Only the insecurity alone is something to worry about. They always focusing on the money aspect. Kidnappers don't want to use ear hear that somebody just flew down to Nigeria from abroad.

Some comment out of ignorance. They don't know how terrible Nigeria is. Those that don't have hope of leaving are mostly the ones that discourage others. But anyone who is wise will know that this country is not a safe place to be.

Because we are contended people, we move for studies, work , sports etc not the do or die by our southern brothers where they do anything just to go abroad.

YOUR UNCLE HAS NOT TOLD YOU THE TRUTH.

YOU THINK ITS EASY TO JUST GET A JOB IN THE US?

IS IMMIGRATION LAWYER FREE OR EVEN CHEAP?

IS THE ASYLUM PROCESS THAT EASY THAT YOU JUST APPLY AND INSTANTA YOU GET TEMPORARY ASYLEE STATUS?

GETTING A CAR IN THE US IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE EASIEST THINGS TO DO COS 2ND HAND CARS ARE CHEAP, ESPECIALLY THE OLDER ONES, SO THATS NOT REALLY AN ACHIEVEMENT. THE LAND HE BOUGHT IN NAIJA, WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF THE LAND? I CAN BET IS ONE OF THOSE LAND DEEP INSIDE BUSH.

AMBULANCE IS NOT LIKE WE SEE IN THE MOVIES OH. IT TAKES TIME TO ARRIVE, THATS THE FIRST SHOCKER. THEN YOU PAY FOR THE TRIP TO HOSPITAL. IM SURE HE DOESNT HAVE INSURANCE SO HE IS LUCKY THEY TOOK HIM IN AS AN EMERGENCY CASE OTHERWISE HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TREATED. ALSO, KIDNEY STONE IS NOT INSTANTLY FATAL; HOSPITALS IN NAIJA HANDLE SUCH ROUTINELY.

ABROAD IS NOT HEAVEN...LOOK VERY WELL BEFORE JUMPING BECAUSE ANOTHER PERSON JAPA IS NOT YOUR OWN JAPA.

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK AS HARD IN NAIJA, YOU WILL MAKE IT HERE AS WELL.

THE MAJOR CONSOLATION FOR DOING HARD MENIAL JOBS ABROAD IS THAT THERE IS SOME DIGNITY OF LABOUR THERE, PLUS WHEN YOU CONVERT THE MONEY TO NAIRA, YOU FEEL A SENSE OF CONSOLATION.

MOST TIMES, AWON ABROAD PEOPLE DO NOT TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THEIR SITUATION AND I THINK IT IS REALLY BAD OF THEM.

ABROAD IS FOR YOU IF

1. YOU HAVE NOTHING IN NAIJA
2. YOU ARE SINGLE
3. YOU ARE BELOW 30YRS

SELAH

I get your time today so I go answer you well well

You say my uncle hasn't Told me the truth so you mean you Sabi my uncle wey I grow up for the same house with me pass okay ooo!

You're telling me I think it's easy to get a job in the US I won't answer this but if you knew the kind of jobs he did here and what it took him to get the job Omo I would confidently say it's easier to get a job over there than here!

You're asking me is Immigration lawyer free or cheap well I would leave you to find out by yourself but one thing I would say is weda it's cheap or expensive if you can afford it then you can get it( irrespective of weda your people back home foot the bills grin )

You asked if the Asylum process is easy that you apply and get instant temp status . My answer to you is this Baba you don't expect me to start Narrating how the whole thing happened and how it went from him waking up to take his bath , eating and taking a bus etc. I just summarised everything. Of course you sound learned and smart and might e older than I am so you should know it's unwise to drop or narrate sensitive things and drop details on a public forum!

ANS : WHEN one is Under Asylum and his case is still being processed , they are under some sort of Government care. As for kidney stone you say it's not Instantly fatal well for someone in Nigeria doing a security job of less than 35k or lesser being given such quick fast and responsive treatment is something he should have not gotten that easy in Nigeria. The cheapest he would have gotten would be in a Govt General hospital and of which he would be given a waiting time that would take months to be attended to if he was to go to a private hospital would he be able to afford it?? Think!

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK AS HARD IN NAIJA, YOU WILL MAKE IT HERE AS WELL.

ANS: for someone who has always wanted to go to the USA from childhood, telling him anything oda than the US no go enter in ear. He's a workaholic at some point in Nigeria he was doing security job in 2 places( Morning Duty here and Night duty in another place ) I think he did it for some months and it nearly cost him his life! He had to focus on one! So such person carrying that same energy Would not suffer abroad!

THE MAJOR CONSOLATION FOR DOING HARD MENIAL JOBS ABROAD IS THAT THERE IS SOME DIGNITY OF LABOUR THERE, PLUS WHEN YOU CONVERT THE MONEY TO NAIRA, YOU FEEL A SENSE OF CONSOLATION.

ANS: yes you're correct cos whatever he is today and the kind of life he's living it's something he would never achieve in Nigeria at least when he was here.

IN CONCLUSION weda it's a cheap car his riding or not the end point is WHATEVER HE HAS NOW IS SOMETHING HE WOULD NEVER HAVE HAD IF HE DIDNT LEAVE 9JA!!

Well to survive overseas you need to be equipped with a lot of information & be ready to work very hard. You have to be specific & realistic , what’s ur purpose of going ? What & how exactly am I going to achieve it. Do your research and don’t rely on general speculations. I know of someone who sold everything and moved to Cyprus, after 2 months dude came back and had to start over again.

Naija may be hard, but it’s one of the freest places to actually live. In Most developed countries you pay for everything to almost the air you breathe. As a Nigerian who is not used to that you may find it very difficult to adjust coz u probably won’t be prepared for it. People succeed though, but with extra hard work, defined planning and a good support system I think.

As for the person talking about Northerners not traveling abroad. That is not true. They do, but they’re not as vocal as our Southern folks, especially in the media space.

Oga, at bolded, you’re giving the impression you don’t pay for air. Truth is, you do pay for air. Majority of Western nations have some form of congestion charge tax to prevent air pollution. This is a form of air tax.

Misconceptions. Many people abroad are poorer that their Nigeria counterparts...they usually save up to show up when they visit Nigeria.

I remember when my wife travelled to the US to have our baby on student VISA while I work as a banker with ACCESSBANK receiving 270k. Lo and behold within few months she was able to save a lot of money as a security officer with 5month pregnancy o and sent 2 cars Toyota Corolla home. In btw I lost my job with the bank few years back and have been unable to get another till date but thank GOD for my daughter tax and stimulus that has been my saving grace to pay house rent and meet up with further expenses at the moment. I’m currently using that car for UBER at the moment and I can’t wait to JAPA cause all my friends are doing pretty better than me at the moment over there sending cars to there parents and have been able to get a good job after there MSC. My take is if at all you wanna travel go with either student visa or immigrant visa , work pretty hard to make a lot of money , jobs are everywhere don’t just be lazy , you can always divert to medical line , social workers or IT and the sky is the limit. GOD should pick my call this year abeg. If my pregnant wife can achieve all this with belle then I’m pretty sure I can achieve triple of this if am not lazy..

So he decided to solve his problem by moving back, after the scrap they could save in Canada, my guy and his family moved back to Nigeria, they had to start afresh, thank God, he had a supportive family and friends, they use their connections to help him find another good job but what is lost is lost till today he still regrets selling his properties for Canada.
Sorry poster but I think this person is not telling you the complete truth about his status in Canada. Canada is full of opportunities what most people strive to do is to just get in ,the wife's and kids could have even chased the assylum option like many Nigerians do and they will be well catered for by the government even though its not the ideal thing.

The first few months is often the toughest for immigrants especially those without papers but with time people will become stable even with menial jobs because there are benefits and safety nets for everyone.

Perhaps I joined this thread late but better late than never.

First, here's a brief history of my life in Naija before I moved.

The highest salary I had ever earned was 60k. That's less than 150 USD for more than 200 hours job. Even that 60k sef, I chop am only 3 times before I comot.

In 2014, when I decided to leave, I was looking at the big countries but because I couldn't afford it, I spent another 4-5 years trying various scholarships.

2019, I got tired and decided to lower my "standards". Go for a small country and work my way up. Little did I know it was a blessing in disguise.

After much research, in February 2020, I left for Vietnam to teach English. I knew from research, the least amount I could get paid was 800USD per month per 100 hours. I laughed as I had seen worse in Naija. I even got a job for 900 USD before I left but I rejected it when I got here. (There's a detailed thread of my journey to Vietnam on Nairaland)

Long story short, I got here, Vietnam surpassed my expectations and I've been climbing higher and higher since then. Go check out my thread for more info.

Now due to Covid and all, after being here for a year and 6 months and working fully for only about 8/9 months, I started thinking of moving to Canada which was my plan initially. Start small, save up, move.

Back to the drawing board....I knew moving, I had to have a very good degree that is highly sort after or a skill to survive the bills and all. The only other option was to go back to school.

I started checking out schools and fees and even though I now had enough to pay for my studies, I had to think of what NEXT after studies, the income to savings ratio and also ask myself what the other advantages are THEN compare with what I have now.

Well, I have decided to stay back here in Vietnam until for any unforeseen reasons, I decide it's time to move cos I'm wayyy more than comfortable here. Cos of living is mega cheap the highest thing I spend on is rent and my current fully furnished to the teeth one bedroom apartment is not up to 250 USD

Now before you comment about Vietnam being a poor country and all that, don't let your ignorance get the best of you. Google. Then ask yourself why even though Naija is bad, there are foreigners who are living comfortably there buying every single thing in supermarkets et all. They earn wayyyy higher than the local. It's the same story here.

So NO, I don't regret moving. It's been one year and some and I don't even miss or dream of going back to visit.

Modified: Oh and let me add...the first three months wasn't rosy.

Two weeks after I came in, total lockdown started. We were indoors for 3 months. Survived on my BTA, landlady reduced rent for me, then back up from home.

It wasn't funny. Immediately after the lockdown, things changed
Hey there! I checked out your relocation thread..currently on page 7. Like you, I'm also being a realist and looking at other countries that won't cost tens of millions to move, but still offer better standard of living than naija. Having stayed for over a year, could you pleaaase just share your first-hand perspective on the best option for a young family such as mine emigrating to Hanoi..Here or via email. Just mention this post if you'd help with that info, and I'll quote you on a dead thread to share contact details/email. Will keep reading your thread though. Thanks a ton

i know so many Regional Bank Managers, CBN staff(that was appointed with her Masters), Bank Managers receiving almost 700k a month still moving to Canada. I can count almost 10 of them. Why do you think they are moving abroad and never for once thought of coming back even after first taking up a Survival Job to kickstart their life in the New Country.

When you travel, most time you sell all you have to go, the shame of coming back make many remain in the rat hole

It could be that they do but to middle east countries and North Africa. In addition, travelling abroad does not automatically mean escaping any number of intolerable situations just as conversely not travelling does not indicate satisfaction with current circumstances. Not to mention the fact that poverty is relative and not limited to material gains.
