Go for accounting. Nigerian universities teach rubbish when it comes to economics. Economics graduands don't know anything.

If I had the funds, I won't mind funding an economics department in either a private or public university to bring out brilliant graduands by employing the best economics scholars available.

I remember asking an economics graduate of Babcock how she would fix the Nigerian economy and she was clueless. They only know how to pass exams. Economics is a practical course and it's always evolving.

Economics all the way, broader prospects. You can register for ICAN classes and sit for the exams while in school or later on, you will learn all the accountimg you need to know there.

Study Economics and write professional examinations in Accountancy. It's a good combination and provides a wider variety of opportunities.

Going back to your question, I have a friend who has OND Accounting, Bsc Economics , ACCA from a foremost Institution in UK and the associate degree that comes with it .

He made the mistake of coming back to Naija and all these qualifications couldn't get him a decent job.


He is presently doing his CFA.

But if you will be studying abroad, I will suggest Economics.

If studying in Nigeria, what you read doesn't mean much especially if you are not from the core North. Lol

As a matter of fact, Economics seems to be your calling than Accounting, but mind you, any choice you eventually made have it at the back of your mind that you will obtain ICAN or ACCA certificate.

The contemporary world we are now require one to be a professional in one's Field, the most sought after today in labour market is professional Accountant.

In the light of the above, this is my advice

1. If you go for Economics and want to go for ICAN you will write 2 or 3 papers in Foundation level

2. If you go for Accounting, you will start your ICAN in SKILL level (semi final stage) provided ICAN accredited your School.

As a BSC holder, this is the journey to become a chartered accountants
1. FOUNDATION LEVEL
2. SKILL LEVEL
3. PROFESSIONAL LEVEL

Dude if you're schooling in Nigeria(esp a public sch) then I'd suggest Economics than accounting. I'm in my final year in acct and I can say the Bsc we're learning here isn't that great. I can tell you that most acct grads can't just up and write ACCA just with the knowledge gotten from uni Even a first sch leaving cert holder can write ICAN now sef. Acct is more abt studying, classifying and recording financial data to determine financial position of a firm while Eco deals with more abt the financial market and how stuff is done there.

Being an accounting graduate myself, I will advise you to study economics and thereafter take the professional exams. In the future you will be open to more areas of study than if you did accounting

Just go for economics if you feel that you can do it. I majored in accounting, I won't want to say that I regret it though but then I would have done something else. You just need an ICAN to become an accountant, so with your degree in economics it should be pretty straightforward for you. I am not saying Accounting is bad, just saying that you can still become an accountant without having a degree in it.

1.Go for BSc Economics, since you already have HND in Banking and Finance.
2. Write and pass the CFA exam (if you have money) Or sit for the useless ICAN where you will be told to learn a craft/trade during your induction.
3. Prepare to study Economics up to PhD level (if you fail number 2)

BSc Economics alone without additional qualifications in Nigeria is useless.
YOU WILL SEE THAT MOST PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO DO BSC IN ECONOMICS ARE ALSO SAYING YOU SHOULD WRITE ICAN. WHY WASTE 4 YEARS STUDYING A COURSE THAT WILL BE USLESS TO YOU.

Go for Accounting, Economics in Nigeria is BS!

Go with accounting dude. You can most likely double major to get your economics degree. Talk to your advising at school to see what credits you'll need. Look up the employment prospects and what you'd like to do more. Also would you be will to get masters in economics if need be.
