If you are a guy and you have your waec, I advise you leave both accounting and economics. Go and hustle, 9ja no ask you what you read in University. I have both Bsc and Msc yet no job am only surving with my betking shop
Smh even with MSC and you still speak like this .... The reason why you may have no job is because job was your primary motivation for education not "knowledge" ...

Change your mindset bro .... look in between the lines ... Job is highly competitive nowadays and what matters in the market now is no more generic education and knowledge....

You must be distinguished and distinct ... you must possessed a special knowledge in your field and na dem go beg you and na you go determine price ....

Economic is the mother of all management and administrative courses . If you are not above average academically don't bother to go and study economics
That course no be moi moi especially in school where runs no dey happen. Econometric nearly gave me carry over.

Economics. I may be sentimental maybe because I love Economics. Generally, Economics is more broad and will expose you to even accounting
Economics won't expose you to sh.it in Accounting....

Accounting is rules/Principles based ...

Economics doesn't have a rule ...

you and I may look at the same phenomenon and come out with different economic theory and we shall both be right and wrong ...

In Accounting, under the same business environment, same transaction and phenomenon... Both companies must achieve same result if not ... There is a Fraud grin because someone has flouted an IAS/IFRS !!

Where is economics applicable in Nigeria apart from govt, the academia and some very select organizations?

Which advantage will you really get?

I am not really in the commercial line so pardon my ignorance.

I am an accountant, and from my experience I will advice you to go for Economics and start ICAN when you are in 300L. It will give great opportunity in life beyond your imagination.

Economics is applicable everywhere even in that local store you will buy your groceries this morning ... Every companies need an economist for planning and Decision making but not too many Economics is needed just one or two to advice the management in responding to economic indices and fluctuations in the market but the problem with economics is that its mostly theoretical while the world is now going Pragmatic !

The advantage of Economics over all other commercial courses including Accounting is that nothing speaks the language of economy than economics.... since commercial/Business disciplines are heavily dependent on economy and her indices , We all need to possess knowledge of Economics so as to be able to respond when the business environment changes even before it changes we must be able to predict the pattern ahead and stir the course of the company ... else ... you will run your employer down and they will sack you !

Most reasonable comments so far. Both courses are great but in terms of opportunity/ prospect in the labour market Accounting is King. Be it chartered or not most finance director will definitely consider B.sc in Accounting over Economics if both candidates did well in an interview.

Option 1
1.Go for BSc Economics, since you already have HND in Banking and Finance.
2. Write and pass the CFA exam (if you have money) Or sit for the useless ICAN where you will be told to learn a craft/trade during your induction.
3. Prepare to study Economics up to PhD level (if you fail number 2)

*Note*
BSc Economics alone without additional qualifications in Nigeria is useless.
YOU WILL SEE THAT MOST PEOPLE TELLING YOU TO DO BSC IN ECONOMICS ARE ALSO SAYING YOU SHOULD WRITE ICAN. WHY WASTE 4 YEARS STUDYING A COURSE THAT WILL BE USLESS TO YOU.

Option 2
1. Go for BSc Accounting.
2. Write and pass ACCA or CFA (if you have the money)
3. Go for MBA.

-----------------------
Save this on a word file and print it out.

If you read their advise well you'll notice that they advised economics with ICAN in order to be a versed business manager

Re: B.sc In Economics Or Accounting.please Advice by komodapson(m): 8:12am On Jul 08, 2021
This is just a twist to the narrative...

Godwin Emefiele, Cbn Governor is an Accountant while Former Governors of Cbn Charles Soludo, Lamido Sanusi are both Economist. During the tenure of the latter, they came about with robust policies which made our economy better, but who we have at affairs of CBN now is just an accountant saddled with responsibility of only collating figures. This says a whole lot about the difference in application of the two courses.

If I'm offered both choices, I'll opt to study Economics over Accountancy

If you are coming to university of uyo, welcome to Accounting department. I’m still asking myself what economists in Nigeria are doing in this current economy.
Take that question to buhari who does not have even one economist in his cabinet. Many economists have adviced this government but what did the government do, they insisted on sharing 10k, 30k and 50k as a means of poverty reduction, borrowing in order to travel and pay unproductive civil servants salaries.
Do not get this wrong, Nigeria inflation is a man made one caused by some people's ignorance, you do not share money to 10% of the population and hope that the price of things will remain thesame in the market.

Don’t let anybody fool you, the econs is not useful if you don’t write any professional exams in another field eg. ICAN, ACCA, CFA. Don’t think your econs will get you jobs in banks ahead of those who studied Foods and Nutrition or Woodwork. Nigeria does not have sectors where to use Econs. You can’t practice on your own if you studied econs but you can practice on your own if you studied accountancy. The only problem with accountancy is that people are too many studying it and it can be discouraging if you don’t start your career well in a good company. I mean western multinational companies, not all this Saka Jelili Ltd, Hispro Hotels, or Yusdas Enterprises o. I am telling you reality. I have more than 17 years top notch work experiences across various multinational companies and I am a certified accountant.
While you are in school, please try and learn or teach yourself these skills and improve on them over time:

Microsoft Excel. ( don’t fool yourself that you are an advanced user the moment you can use Pivot table or use vlookup or xlookup o. Go and learn deeper Excel. There are free materials online.

Learn financial modeling using Excel to the best of your ability.

Learn Power BI or Tableau for data management, business reporting and analysis.

Learn PowerPoint ( I can give you a YouTube site where you can learn world class PowerPoint for free. I have materials for others too but I don’t guarantee they will be relevant by the time you graduate).

Finish your professional exams on time.

Aim high and target multinationals like GE, BAT, Nestle, Unilever, Atlascopco, P&G, GSK, Microsoft, etc. if you don’t eventually get any of those ones, you will get something closer eg PayStack, Flutterwave, Andela, Hayat Kimya etc. But if you lower your bar, you are in for a loooong thing.

All the best.
Did you just say that an economics graduate can not practice on his own? What do you take economics for, please say what you know.
As a student of economics, you are trained to be a professional data analyist, that is the reason why you are expected to have good knowledge of EVIEWS, SPSS, STATA and R before you graduate. Economics graduate can practice as private consultants just as an accounting graduate.

It depends on your career objectives so you are in the best position to decide.

But as an experienced professional, I will suggest you go with Economics because it will broaden your knowledge and widen your career options.

With the banking and finance certificate you already have, you can easily become a chartered accountant if you decide to write ICAN exams (and I will urge you to go for it). Best wishes.

If you can advise him to write ACCA and accept option of Btech in Accounting from Oxford Brooke's University, UK then he may not need to enrol for Bsc again ... He should be able to proceed to Canada for MBA afterwards using his ACCA and Btech as entry requirements because HND doesn't enter MBA oo ... I doubt ! ..

I know for sure HND doesn't enter MSC!

Thank you very much. God bless you.

I'm a Canadian citizen I just want to know how I can help him to get to where he needs to be. I will prefer him to go to Canada to write equipment of the Btech there, rather than in the UK. I'm not sure even if this is possible. I'm not very familiar with nigerian education systems but I wrote my WAEC in Lagos.

Thanks again.

Please friends and good people of nairaland help me out to make a right choice am in a cross road with my career, i have HND in banking and finance with upper credit, am i applied for direct entry in a federal university and am giving the option to choose between B.sc ECONOMICS and ACCOUNTANCY, please your matured advice is needed on the one to go for. Do give reasons for your choice

B. SC Economics(Macroeconomics or Microeconomics or Development Economics) and qualify as an ICAN chartered accountant. The world is at your feet with both qualifications. There is a shortage of economic managers and ideas that will impact on people positively.

Ngozi Okongko Iweala is enjoying the perks at the moment.

You regret studying Accounting.... You don't even know the value of what God gives you ... you should have studied Adult Education now ....

Who regrets Studying Accounting....

After Economics that's covers all aspect of Economy next best discipline is Accounting...

In fact, an Economist without the knowledge of accounting is a useless economist and an Accountant can operate efficiently and effectively with a small knowledge of economics...

That's why an Economist is always advice to go for ICAN or ACCA or CFA(There is accounting module in CFA) if not ordinary Economics may not take your far except you sabi road ...

Ordinary economics will take you far if you advance your study via MSC and PhD in economics or any of her specialisation ....

With Accounting... Just B.sc and ICAN/ACCA/CFA is enough to take you to the world or atleast Nigeria !!

Who regrets such a very Discipline with a Cabal body called IFAC .... Accounting is one of the most prestigious course in the world and one of the most protected Job in the World !!

You misquoted the essence of my post and I won't argue with you. My point was clear for all to see. I see no reason why God won't give me what I applied for according to you.
