Is cigarettes not supposed to be Haram to Muslims?

Is it not morally unrighteous as an habit?

Is it not primarily a western culture?

Does it not harm the health of a smoker?

So why do Muslims feel cool with cigarettes but condenm alcohol

As at then, public smoking is normal and permitted. In fact, the most popular ads on Tv and Radio then were by Tobacco companies. You will hear on radio ads like "Cigar Target o!Na wa!".
But a lot has changed now so much that even cigarette packs now carry warnings that you are liable to die from smoking. Late President Shehu Shagari at that age, is not different from most of his age mates then ,he was probably in his late 20s or early 30s in the video and he's still looking charismatic. So it's not a big issue.

The late Prime Minister's clearly brilliant and knowledgeable about the subject he is talking on as this was a big issue then to discuss because of the civil rights movement in the US , so here he's throwing Nigeria's big national pride and international clout against racism considered then such sensitive international debate. Wow!! No one will believe he is the leader of a country that was barely 5 years old with such aura and authority of power & influence he was oozing ; he went as far as stating categorically what he told the US political leaders while in Washington against racism. His diction and command of English is topnotch and his trademark baritone voice is so Presidential and reminds me of the voice of late Dr. Martin Luther King.

Up till now, I still wonder why this man and others like Chief SL Akintola and Premier Sardauna Alhaji Ahmadu Bello had to be assassinated. Unlike their peers in other regions who lived long enough to reproduce more of their followers, these two Leaders of Northern extraction were killed in their prime and did not live to do that for the North and till date, sets the North back so much that they are yet to recover. May we never experience such calamitous national loss again. God bless Nigeria. Our heroes past shall not be in vain. @ OP , thank you for sharing this.

Actually he does. It takes Intelligence, confidence and deep understanding to deconstruct "established" realities especially considering that period of time and the fact that they were just coming out of colonialism.

On a lighter note it seems the confidence in Nigerians (and for which most Africans hate us) is "factory fitted"

They were intellectuals who are well grounded and brilliant, teaching job those days is more prestigious than today and the teaching jobs were taken by smart people like them for strategic reasons.

Imagine these leaders, especially Sardauna, getting our neighbouring countries then as far back early 60s when we were barely a republic o, to agree not to dam the River Niger so we can build ours and these countries, they all signed up to it!. This is a task current day Ethiopia could not achieve with Egypt and Sudan that it's been taken to UN with Egypt threatening grave repercussions if Ethiopia still plans to fill the grand renaissance dam in Ethiopia with water from the blue Nile river.

Below's a textbook authored by late Shehu Shagari but most people don't know that these guys are intellectuals as well . How many teachers those days or present day politicians like Sowore et al write textbooks for students? Yet the same late Shehu Shagari smoking in the video wrote probably more than one educational textbook and published, this one below is a textbook on Geography and History of Nigeria in Verse that was published just after Nigeria's civil war.

Wow.

@op thanks for sharing.

It was a delight to hear Tafawa Balewa speak. His dictation, command of english and even the issue he was speaking on in such a year, such a brilliant sound man.

Where did it all go down hill for the North and Nigeria, that we started allowing animals into power cry

Looking at this I have no doubt that it cannot be well with Nigeria, Nigeria cannot get better. Our sins and the atrocities we have allowed are too great cry

The land, Nigeria, will never bless those who curse it. Don't be surprised when you reap only bad luck from the land because of your curse. That you're even making such a curse around this time of the day has spiritual implications on you too. You don't start your day with a curse, it comes back to you. Everything in life happens for a reason. Mistakes were made and lessons learnt. That explains why every patriot keeps praying for the country. These patriots did not die in vain. Some countries never recovered, from Pakistan to Libya to Afghanistan to India/ Bangladesh and even some European countries that make up the old Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia etc. Nigeria is blessed. God bless Nigeria more.
