BlueRayDick:It's not Femi that proposed it rather I think it's from the ministry of Agric or thereabout... I don't support the proposal though, there's enough land in just about every state, if you want to ranch, lease a piece of land and do your ranching. It's counterproductive to ask states to provide land for ranching as that will mean a certain segment of the country are treated better than others... 6 Likes 2 Shares |

BlueRayDick: What should be the role of the state govt or is it just to collect security allowance? The herdsmen farmer crisis has been going on for as long as I can remember. Its always at the root of those riots in the middle belt even in the 90s desertification, insecurity and politics just blew it out of control A herdsman rearing his cattle in free range and a farmer cannot coexist because their businesses are opposite This Fulani herdsmen crisis did not start with Buhari and will not end with Buhari. Benue Plateau Kogi have been dealing with it for years Type in google (Fulani attack Benue village + 2012) or any year you want and you are guaranteed to see something gory. Most cows are owned by rich people all over the country, Northerners and Southerners. The owners provide their herders with guns to "protect" them against cattle rustlers 3 Likes |

The main thing for me is the theme, how a concept like that can play out Asking states to gift portions of their land to northerners for free wouldn't be fair, I agree but that is the first idea, they should have engaged them in dialogue, bring all parties to the table to discuss the issue, instead of just being blunt Government will have to stimulate that enterprise, they can be taxed more later but if you want it to be financially profitable for private investments vehicles, you need to provide very cheap loans, financial aid packages and plenty tax credits, I can't estimate but i'm sure that it will be financially profitable to the entire economy 2 Likes |

Havertz10:Yes give the land to the herders at a relatively cheap price and introduce levies just like how it's been done in some of our local markets to recoup the investment made. Dialogue would solve most of the problems between farmers and herders but grandstanding won't allow each side to see the benefit of dialogue. Despite the troubles caused by herders the meat and milk produce aren't good enough to satisfy our needs because the cattle have expended their energy in trekking instead of conserving it for meat and milk production. |

raumdeuter: Well I don't know how much state's security votes are neither do I know how much they spend out of it but states like Lagos have been buying cars and equipment for the police here in Lagos. I'm not absolving the governors of the blame for collecting security votes and just keeping it to themselves, but issues like state policing and decentralizing the security architecture of this country have always been kicked against in the past until of recent. Yes herders-farmers crisis has been on for a long time, but asking people to give up their lands for ranching will solve the problem because will not just give up their land instead of the Herders buying them and using it for whatever they want to. 1 Like |

My take on this farmers herders issue. The issue has been blown out of proportion and has become the avenue for other criminals to commit crimes under the guise of fulani herdsmen. Most of the fulani looking killers are not primarily herders. The situation got worse when more killings were attributed to herdsmen and thus hostility towards them became increased, making it difficult for normal herdsmen to move around freely, their rich owners decides to protect their investments by purchasing more guns for their herders. And the situation just gets worse. The normadic system of herdership is redundant as the cows look skinny from lengthy trekking, cattle herders should more to more efficient ways of rearing their cows. When RUGA talks came out, i saw some sense in it, except for a few gray areas i thought should be modified to make it better, however what saturated the news was talk of how it was a system that was to be used to establish a fulani dynasty all over Nigeria. My suggestion is that since cattle herdership is a private business, government to put in place policies to encourage them to change from nomadic style and embrace better ways of rearing cattles, education and enlightenment should be a solid part of the strategy. They should be encouraged to purchase lands for their this enterprises, they best government can do is to subsidize these settlements since it will make them more willing to embrace the system and can result in economic growth. The problem however is that theorist will arise to discourage people from selling their lands for this purpose, which could pose a real challenge. All in all, i think more dialogue will go a long way in addressing this issues, with both parties willing to make compromises. 3 Likes |
