Monopoly in the petroleum sector will be counter productive and dangerous. Should never be allowed. How will deregulation work? If Ure good enough u will sell so what is dangote afraid of? |

This Northerners and they Power seeking idea, you get fuel from the south and you build refinery in the North. what kind of idea is that. what you are near the well you will have good access to water. the only contradiction to this statement is Nigeria. southerners should borrow brain if they did not have one. later they will say igbo people get money why dey no building refinery too |

I thought it made provision for all refiners to import based on their last quarter production?. If my understanding is true I don't see any thing wrong with the bill 1 Like |

This sections of the Bill is very retarded. It isn't forward thinking at all. Banning importation of petroleum products makes absolutely no sense. This will simply turn the largest refinery owner in the country into a ferocious monopoly. His behavior displays a hatred of competition in all forms. Nigeria's plan should be refining nothing less than 2.5m barrels of oil a day but instead is only focused on protecting the interest of the largest investor in the industry. This will strangle the sector and hold it back. Dangote would see any new player in the industry as a competitor and a threat to a monopolized market. Great damage has already been done to the construction industry by the ban on cement impirtatuin. This has simply made cement expensive and made the biggest beneficiaries of the ban Forbes billionaires. Nigerians have been given a raw deal in one industry. The second is now loading. NNPC unscrambling, privatization and commercialisation of parts in future would be at the mercy of the titan behind the Bill. NNPC's full potential needs to be unleashed for the country to benefit. The PIB should be placed on the burner for now. The oil majors never supported the Bill as they said it would adversely affect the oil industry. Rumor had it that even Kachikwu was against the Bill. That's why for years it was never passed. 5 Likes 1 Share |

MakotoShishio: Sometimes we need to see things from the lenses of a broader perspective. For decades our downstream sector was characterized by subsidiary fraud and fuel scarcity. PMB decided that since it was proving impossible to revitalise our refinery NNPC needed to be the sole importer and wholesale merchants of petrol, this initiative has solved a lot of problems, first the perception of subsidy theft has reduced, and secondly the product doesn't experience artificial scarcity at least in the past 2 years. The NNPC want to retain this model, this has informed their decision to invest in buying 20% stake in Dangote refinery. They probably hope this move will help them retain the right to price control of products thereby avoiding scarcity, there will also be reduction in freight cost as a fraction of the cost of petroleum products is incurred in transportation and also help Dangote by making sure his plant is not starved of raw material (crude oil). The question becomes what happens to the other refinery that come up before or after Dangote? This is the beauty of being the biggest and the earliest to enter into the market your operations create a barrier to entry. If I were to setup a refinery in Nigeria I will situate it in cross River state and my target market will be Cameroon. |

Esseite: How does he become the new NNPC, when NNPC has several arms such as NAPIMS, IDSL, PPMC, all involved at various points of the oil and gas trade? Whose fault is it that whilst Dangote has been investing HUGE resources into petroleum refining, many others prefer to purchase state of the art cars and mansions? Should Nigeria wait for others to catch up before it proceeds? 1 Like |

Amaechi2023:If dangote has a license to refine oil why should he need a license to import fuel. Why have a license in the first place and kill competition. Why can't Nigeria have an open market economy free from government regulations and corruption. Dangote should not need, and should not be given a license to import fuel. His business is refining it. ⏩Yet, Osinbajo, Tinubu, Wike, South-South legislators & other Southern stakeholders are there keeping vigil as they are slowly being edged out of the economic activities of the resources that originate from their region.⏪ ❌❌❌❌ In the 2 remaining years,Buhari wants to ensure that the key activities that are crucial to the life of a nation are strictly in the hands of his people. And the way he is going, if he decides to go for 3rd, Tinubu will just be there like mumu. It is now we are seeing the good that Sarai was doing, but we didn't acknowledge him. |

Amaechi2023:Ignorant argument. Dangote matters is not a big man vs big man war. It's pure tribal supremacy and you know that. The cement argument is trying to play out same as the petroleum in future. Dangote owns majors licence to mine limestone in Nigeria, other players but from him so can't scuttle the market leader. Same way having to hold major licence to import petroleum product in this early stage will put other player below him in future. |
Re: PIB Would Permit Only Dangote Refinery, NNPC To Import Fuel by Nobody: 12:12pm On Jul 12, 2021 |
Commentor: We do... would extreme monopoly be a free enterprise? Now Dangote has the largest refinery... what if he acquires the largest oil well, and a largest network of retail petrol stations. That would be a complete petroleum chain that could cripple any Government with as little as an artificial increase in price.. That is very dangerous. 1 Like |
