A man who was believed to have been "drunk" walked into the sea for a wee at a Brazilian beach – only to be killed by a shark in the shallow water.

A bystander photographed the mutilated corpse of 51-year-old Marcelo Rocha Santos after it was pulled from water.

The shark had torn off Santos’s hand and bitten a large chunk out of his leg.

The incident took place at Piedade Beach in the Brazilian city of Jaboatao dos Guararapes on Saturday 10th July.

Santos’s lifeless body was taken to hospital in the neighbouring city of Recife where he was later pronounced dead.

The attack took place off an area of the beach where there had been 12 previous shark attacks. A lifeguard was on duty at the time, but was unable to prevent the attack.

Mechanic Edriano Gomes told reporters that the victim had been drinking with friends. He entered the water at around 2 pm when the sky started to cloud over and the sea was becoming choppy.

Gomes said: "It was a friend of mine who was in the sea with the person who was attacked. Suddenly, he saw the man struggling. There was a lot of blood in the water."

He told reporters: "As the beach has no bathroom, I went into the sea to pee. I was beside him with the water up to our waists."

Marcelo's friends brought the victim to shore where he fell to the ground unconscious.

It is not known what kind of shark attacked him, though experts say it was likely to have been either a bull shark ( Carcharhinus leucas ) or a tiger shark ( Galeocerdo cuvier ).

The scene of the incident is a known shark-attack hotspot, as it is open and unprotected by reefs. Shark attacks are also more common at this time of year as the rains make the sea murky.

It is believed that despite the various signs warning people not to enter the water, the lifeguard on duty did not tell the two men to get out of the sea as they were only up to their waists.

In the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, where Jaboatao dos Guararapes is located and which has around 187 kilometres (116 mi) of coast, there have been 62 shark attacks with 25 fatalities since 1992 when building works at Suape Port disrupted the animals' breeding and hunting habits.

I'm always pissed when I watch all those documentaries on sharks or snakes and I hear the so called experts always telling us that these deadly animals are actually not that bad because they don't like attacking humans since humans are not their prey. I always think that's bullcrap. Because now someone will see shark infested water and still enter because one expert said they don't attack humans, and then when the person is killed, same experts will come out to say it's because the animal was provoked and I'm like

You miss the point, the shark wasn't trying to eat the man,it's only protecting it's territory and it cannot speak the human language (if not it would have sounded a warning) it's best option it could opt for was to attack.
Just because experts say sharks don't hunt humans doesn't mean they won't attack you if you cross its boundary......Note it didn't come on land to meet the man,the man went into the water,into it's home (the poor thing could've been scared so it used it's only defensive weapon) what if it was you and a total stranger walks into your home suspiciously,won't you react?!

I have been wondering of this for a long time, I notice that when those wild animals kill human being they will not eat it,even though they are carnivorous why did they always kill human when they know that they not eat him or is there any special thing about human that make them to kill him and left his carcass?

The answer to your question should be in my earlier reply, it's obvious that they do that to protect/defend themselves

Going deeper in the science of animals (if you are conversant with wildlife documentary/history) some animals will attack when they percieve the slightest threat,they would do anything to protect their territory (main reason why we tamed dogs to watch/protect our homes, some dogs are even capable of killing the threat/intruder) ,some aren't equipped to attack and resort to fleeing the scene (this one's possess specific features/adaptations that makes escaping the best option for them),Some have evolved and become intelligent enough that they are capable of warning you/threat before they attack...To understand better,watch documentaries,read animal discoveries/encyclopedia to identify each animals,by doing so you'll understand why animals behave the way they do....

Also there are cases, where a tamed animal kills it's owner/trainer,when this happens it's either a fault on the trainer's part or a mistake from the animal (animals give for example a tamed tiger/lion that bites it's trainer unaware of how dangerous his bite might be to his owner/trainer all in the name of rough play might end up killing the person.)
