INEC panel chair votes against own report.

Members of the All Progressives Congress in the Senate on Thursday voted against electronic transmission of results.

The Committee had, in the report, recommended in Section 52(3) that, INEC “may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”

But an APC senator from Niger North, Sabi Abdullahi, amended the clause to read, “INEC may consider electronic collation of results, provided the national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secured by the Nigerian Communications Commission and approved by the National Assembly.”

Members of the Committee on Communications had earlier informed the chamber that the NCC had declared that only 43 per cent of the country was currently under effective telecommunications coverage.

Senate President, Ibrahim Lawan, ruled in favour of the amendment when he conducted a voice vote.

There was a disagreement and the Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, called for a division which would require individual voting on the floor.

Lawan sustained Abaribe’s point of order and called for a division.

At the end of the poll, 88 senators voted, while 28 were not available to vote.

The outcome of the election showed that 52 APC senators, including the chairman of the Senate INEC committee, Kabiru Gaya, voted against the panel’s report, which gives the electoral umpire the sole power to determine the practicability of electronic transmission of results.

The Peoples Democratic Party members on the floor all voted in favour of electronic transmission of results by INEC without interference from either the NCC or the National Assembly.

The APC members, while casting their votes against the amendment, attributed their decision to the claim of the NCC that only 43 per cent of the country has network coverage.

The PDP senators, on the other hand, said allowing the NCC and the National Assembly to meddle in the affairs of INEC will affect the integrity of the polls

Not suprised.....this is the same avenue that proved that the lifeless vegetable rigged massively during the last election. They later claimed it wasn't enshrined in the constitution (or something like that). A bill like this will ensure election malpractices end in Nigeria. But our senators [both PDP and APC] are against anything favoring the masses. They're only after what favors them. Ever wondered why our educational sector is sooo corrupt? And our higher institutions laughable ?? There children school overseas and come back to occupy all the juicy positions. They are prepped ready to occupy political positions. Any of them that shows interest in politics is given a huge heave to the top, to continue from his fathers (or any relative of his) shoes. Our youths themselves (some) are just the same like these leaders. We all are the same. Ordinary lecturer.....(no this is too far) make someone a Facebook or whatsapp admin and watch him abuse this little position. Truly truly, Nigeria is gone. We need a total overhauling of all our structures. Parents encourage there kids to engage in scamming, drug pushing and prostitution . How do you think Nigerias future can be bright with the leaders of tomorrow engaging in such frivolities and unspeakable actions??

Change begins with you and I and not our politicians. We are all the same

cool

Electronic transmission of results isn't feasible with many polling unit without ordinary communication mast

Even the places with high speed internet, a signal jammer can be deployed with hackers manipulating packet of signal sent between unit and INEC

The process is simple... Acreditate everyone, let everyone vote and wait to see their votes counted making videos and pictures by citizens , INEC ADHOCS and party agents

As advanced as USA is mail in votes and online ballots caused a chaotic election resulting into riot and loss of life

Thiefs will not want election done electronically even with level of advanced techology in the world, so the can easily manipulate figures to thire favour. I pity people who go out to vote under hot sun, those are mere formality, because even b4 election them ontop knows the winner.

That bill in the current state appears to be a trap.

Subjecting INEC to a further approval from NCC and NASS errodes the commission of her independence.

Anytime I watch the proceedings of the South Africa parliament, I shake my head for Nigeria's NASS.
