That church makes a lot of capital investment into their infrastructure and they don't do the parish model that you have in redeemed, at least not in Naija. Sunday services are broadcast from HQ in Otta to their satellite buildings in Lagos, so there's nothing like 'area congregation'. I dont know if they still do it, but I know back in the day the Church used to run a full fleet of buses to transport members to church for free from all across Lagos.

There are two kinds of pastors in that church, volunteers and fulltime. If you want to preach for the love of God without being paid for it, you can attend WOFBI, be ordained as a pastor and be able to preach at different winners services without collecting a dime. That one is between you and God. However, if you're on a salary then you are being paid to meet certain obligations and if you dont meet them, you MUST be sacked. It's not manna from heaven that is paying your salary, it's church income, and they must be able to deploy their capital with maximum efficiency.

If you accept to collect salary from a church as a pastor, then you must accept a quota of souls to be converted to the brand. If you dont meet up then geddifok and go and open your own slow growing church.

To be honest, that tax argument is a non-starter for so many reasons, the most basic of which being that the church does not produce ang goods and services for commercial purposes, and does not demand payment either, and is completely self-funded using generous donations from members of the congregation. I'm sure that the church-owned business ventures like the schools, hospitality, and agricultural units are individual legal entities who are meeting their tax obligations, but trying to tax the church itself? fogerrit.

Oyedepo doesn't need to asslick anybody. The guy has built entire cities in Ota and Omu-aran, which are self-sufficient in every sense of the word - I'm talking electricity, water, healthcare, agriculture, security etc.

Regarding your question, it's because a church doesn't sell anything. Of course it operates like a business, and the most sucessful ones are designed to be extremely profitable, but what do members of the congregation buy? What do they receive in return? Where is their receipt? What is the return policy? People who willfully donate offerings too the church do not expect goods or services from the church in return, and so for them Church is not a business.
