The Ikwerre people are indigenous people of Rivers State and have been in Rivers state longer the longest. This Benin story is only correct for some Ahoada clans in Rivers state, and was stupidly been peddled by some uninformed ikwerre politicians and sadly this is now being peddled by some learned people who are too lazy to research their own history.

My great grand father was an educated man, and was a custodian of our peoples culture in rivers state, I will share some of that knowledge with anyone listening.

There was nothing understood to be igbo tribe amongst the igboic speaking before the formation of Nigeria. Anyone who understood igbo especially igboic speaking people would just say I understand igbo and then say the name of their clan.

The people who reffered to them as igbo would be people from far away from the old eastern region as most people of the now SS would understand and speak some igbo as a second language as well as the language was an important language for business The only reason why we are all hearing igbo this or igbo that is because of the creation of Nigeria, the people who are igbo speaking bought and sold theirselves for centuries, and never found it necessary to see themselves alike. So for all the hatred igbos have on nigeria, just know that Nigeria is best thing to happen to igbo people, it brought igbo people together (atleast for now, all the SE states together)

In the past the Aros considered their selves to be superior to every other clan in their trade route, other clans like the Nri also thought themselves to be superior as well.

The people who call themselves ikwerre today are actually of diverse origin, Ikwerre land being the last part of the igboic hinterland before the creeks/ocean was settled by different people from different places who came to cash out from the booming slave trade, back then it was easy to get slaves from igboland as their people were in large numbers and they had caste system.

The original Ikwerres were the most powerful igboic people east of the niger and the biggest slave dealers, hence the name iwhurunoha which means in the presence of the greatest men, they were mostly warriors and slave kidnappers who were also into kingdom building and empire advancement which explains the vast amount of land owned by the ikwerres today . Their people controlled the Aro confederacy at a point before their king was dethroned by other warring clans. The original ikwerre people are actually an off shoot of ngwa people, but ikwerreland was inhabited by people from all over. Before the Nigeria/ Nigerian civil war no ikwerre person would take offense with being called igbo, hell, no one would actually introduce theirselve as an igbo man, that would have seem as vague as saying I am african. If you called a person who spoke igbo an igboman, they would not dispute it, as it would basically be understood as a person who can speak igbo, this is true for so many tribes in the SS that are now understood not to be igbo people.

Today, most ikwerre people do not know that a major part of current imo state is ikwerre land, and the ohaji people, egbema people are also ikwere people, and that in their midst are actual people from igbo hinterland who came and settled their. They may only know the Aro Osu people who came in the early 1900s.

I am asking all learned ikwerres to resist the history twisting which bad politicians and bad leaders are trying to use to make them foreigners in the very land that their forefathers were birthed to, fought for and defended.

They can argue that ikwerre wants to be seen as a distinct ethnicity as igbos,(for which I wouldnt see the benefit) but dont let some few selfish people get away with arm twisiting your history for their personal gains, and declaring you non indigenes to a land that you are truly indigenous to.

As a matter of facr if there is any igboic speaking clan that would be argued as the originator/progenator of igbo language and culture, it would be the ikwerre people and the Isu people of imo and anambra state. Because from my findings, the igbo clans in Abia have ancestral ties with the efiks and the ibibios, the Nsukka people have theirs with the the Idoma people. the ebonyi people have their with the ogoja people of cross river, the nothern Anambras and some anioma people have theirs with the igalas, the nothern aniomas have theirs with the binis. The Ikwerres do not have any ancestral ties to any other known group, rather they dominated the lifestyle in the creeks and are responsible for introducing igbo centric cultures to my people in the creeks, when my great grandparents were talking about igbo people they were doing business with from the hinterland, they were actually talking about the Ikwerres, most riverine communities in Rivers state know the ikwerre people as Igbo people according to history.

I agree with you, everything about Ikwerres points them to the igboid family, but for political reasons your people the Ikwerres are denying trying to rewrite history pointing themselves to the bini kingdom, they think they are hurting the igbos by doing that but they are doing damage to the little that is left of the Ikwerre history, people like wike came out to repeat the Statment of Ikwerres migrated from bini it's funny

Oga, there are Black Americans who believe that they're indigenous to America. They also believe that the slave trade never happened. The so-called "indigenous black skins Native Americans" you're talking about may have darker skin compared to other Native Americans, but their physical features already show they aren't Black. Moreover, there was a lot of intermarriage between enslaved Africans and Native Americans. Black people are not indigenous to America.
I have never heard an African American deny slave trade or their African ancestry can you point to any famous African American who denied his African heritage?

That was why I said any intelligent person wouldn't believe such claims. They are too far apart, even separated by River Niger. So how can Ikwerre then be an offspring of Bini and don't have any form of semblance whatsoever.

Wike is a politician and not a historian. You shouldn't expect less of him.

Well a lot of Ikwerres agree with wike so the identity crisis in Ikwerre is a big one

The Bini was never in partnership with the Itsekiris, rather Itsekiris was the Bini Subject (slaves) just as the igbos. Reno is trying to paint his people as a potential rulers along side the Binis, which was not so. Benin empire conquer all region in the South-south and south-southwest.

The Awori are 100% Yorubas and from Ife Originally

Lagos is Aworiland

Lagos is 100% Yorubaland

On the day the British Colonial Government first landed in Lagos in 1851 Oyo controlled Badagry Area Which they had taken from the king of Dahomey along with Porto Novo (Ajase) in War .

The Oyos had initially also taken Allada ,Ouidah and Cotonou at the time but the King of Dahomey had managed to take them back while the Oyo were very busy fighting the Power drunk Afonja and the Fulani at Ilorin

The Oyos had fought Dahomey as Allies of the Eguns
Aare oona kakanfo Oyabi had led the Oyo Army

The Abeokuta Egba Army Controlled all of Lagos Mainland and all the Territory from there to Abeokuta Which they had won in the Ota War of 1842 in Which the Oyos of Ibadan fought as Allies of Oba Kosoko and the Awori and received such a heavy defeat at the hands of the Egbas that the Ibadan Army had to be smuggled back home.

The whole Episode almost led to the downfall of Basorun Oluyole back at Ibadan

The Ijebu Controlled Everything East and North of Lekki

All Oba Kosoko Controlled was the Slave market and Port of Isale Eko on Lagos Island, Even Ikoyi belonged to the Onikoyi who was an Oyo man

Again if you hear that Yorubas spent 100 years fighting themselves till 1878,

Just know that the Egba, Ijebu and Oyo Which included Ibadan were fighting for Control of the Coast of Lagos

Control of the Coast of Lagos meant Titanic Wealth. but unfortunately much of that was from the Slave trade

The Lagos territory Controlled by the Egbas , Oyo and Oba Kosoko belonged to the Awori People who were the most Peaceful and accommodating of all Yoruba Clans

Eko is Yoruba short for Ereko which means field and for Confirmation Ereko Market where the Egbas and Ijebu traded is still on Lagos Island today

Also Eko Ende in Osun State was one of the Locations of the Jalumi War of 1878

The Awori have inhabited Lagos since the 13th Century when they migrated from Ile Ife led by Olofin Ogunfuminire who was a great grandson of Oduduwa and a nephew of Oranmiyan who headed to Benin around the same period

The Land on Which Isale Eko of the Oba of Lagos is located belongs to the Awori Yoruba Aromire family till today

Aromire was one of the Sons of Olofin Ogunfuminire

The Otun Ekiti People migrated from Lagos in the 15 th Century and share the same ancestry with the Awori of Lagos

It was the returnee Egba Slaves who had been Converted to Christianity at Sierra Leone that asked the British Queen Victoria to invade Oba Kosoko’s Lagos in order to finally end the Evil Slave trade

Bishop Ajayi Crowther had met with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert her Husband at Windsor Castle over the Issue of how to finally end the Slave Trade in Lagos on 18th November 1851 and the Royal British Navy Bombarded Lagos one month Later on 26th of December 1851.

Bishop Ajayi Crowther who was originally from Osogun near Oyo had himself at age 13 been sold to a Portuguese Slave Trader at Lagos for a bottle of Wine and some Tobacco leaves

Capt Labulo Davies who later married Queen Victoria’s adopted Daughter Sarah Bonnetta was on the British ship that Bombarded Oba Kosoko’s Lagos in 1951 and Oba Akitoye whom the British had restored to the Throne of Lagos had first met the British Missionaries at Abeokuta while he was exiled there as Abeokuta was also Oba Akitoyes Owu mother’s Hometown he had promised. to end the Evil Slave Trade if the British helped to restore him to his Throne which his nephew Oba Kosoko had Usurped with the help of some local and Portuguese Slave traders after Oba Akintoye had driven the Portuguese Slave Traders out of Lagos 6 years earlier

Slave Trading was Oba Kosoko’s Business and his Slave Market was at Ereko Market of Isale Eko on Lagos Island where he also sold European made Goods

Maybe you don't know that some of your igbo names and names of some of your towns in igbo land originated from Benin! Painful too, but fact!
And we took the whole of Bini under a day in 1967. You people are either part of our vassal states or that of the Fulani as a conquered property. Whenever Nigeria wants to break, we will decide the owner between us and the Fulani.

Edo as a people and a small tribe has produced two vice president, Aikhomu and Akhigbe. the vice to Babangida and Abdulsalami. As a small tribe out of the over two hundred and fifty groups in Nigeria, We have a nationalist of equivalent importance to the two major ethnic group in southern Nigeria, in the person of Anthony Enahoro. We had Anenih even as he was from a minority tribe Edo, he was of worthy national importance that he was termed Mr fix it.
The father of modern Christianity in Nigeria, Benson Andrew Idahosa that dominated the Christian space for more than thirty years in Nigeria up till he died that he was dubbed the black missionary from Africa is Edo. And within this period, Icons from your two major tribes came to the "village" Benin cap in hand for insight and mentorship. We don't produce empty men. When an Edo man is set out for greatness , he sets out for it globally.
The first private airline was also founded by an Edo man( Okada airline) The first private University was founded by same person. Igbinedion University Okada. "Oh Edo is not all that with their two million population oh with their five hundred thousand population ,with their fifty thousand poulation" 2face said something if nobody talk about you then you are nobody,I think I agree with him. Edo is not all that yet her threads are littered all over nairaland! so much for one of the small tribe out of the over two hundred and fifty ethnic groups in Nigeria. EDOIRISIAGBON, EDOKHAVBAYE, EDORETIN,EDOROGIE, EDORODION.

Benson Idahosa was the Champion of the False Gospel of Prosperity Preaching Which led to an explosion of Greed Which Nigerian Christianity is still wrestling with today
