Since I was a Child I knew Eko was named after Ereko Market on Lagos Island by the Yoruba

Ereko Was Oba Kosoko’s Quarters where he Sold Slaves and European goods

There are Eko Ajala and Eko Ende in Osun State

This is the Historical Document from the 1840s Confirming it

Interpretation of the Osifekunde Slave narrative from 18th Century , Below it is the Map of Lagos at Independence you will see that at least 97% of Lagos is inside Awolowo’s Western Region , Lagos is on Lagos Island

"Captain Horseley called it Eco, and that is how the yebous refer to it; but it is not their land: it belongs to Benin, whom have named it Korame, you can recognise the Curamo from older Portuguese reports, just like Eko represents the Ichoo from Holland Hydrographs. Long ago Korame was linked to its metropolis by a very narrow piece of land contained between the great Laguna and the sea; but it has been a while since the yebous have seized that very narrow piece of land of which the eastern extremity was invaded by ouyo pirates; and Karamé remained isolated at the extremity of the great Laguna, while it continues to receive from Benin it's governor or political chief."
Kurame was a strong bastardization of the word Ekonunuame by the Portuguese who couldn't pronounce it properly

Lagos Island Belonged to the Yoruba Awori Chief Aromire

Korame that Benin called Lagos could be short for Eko Aromire in Yoruba this means Aromire Field Just like Eko Ajala in Osun State means Ajala’s Field

Ereko means Field in Yoruba

Ereko Ile describes an Island

The Short is Eko

And Ereko Market is still today on Lagos Island to prove it

What I would think it would be was Ekonunuame-meaning war camp beside water, or soldiers camp, there is no where Eko is used in Edo history as a settlement or camp that is not related to war or soldiers. we have history of soldiers in Lagos. The word Ekonunuame strongly means the camp beside water. Lagos as we had affiliation with her is the only place that is known as Ekonunuame in Edo lexicon. The use of the word predated my existence, Predated my father's existence. when an Edo man is speaking Edo if he is referring to Lagos he would say Ekonunuame- it is an ancient word and it has been in existence from time and has it own very pristine meaning in Edo in reference to lagos. There is Ekosodin as I have mentioned earlier which means "a soldier's camp with Oshodin as the head. The same with several others, as it was known that the Binis were warriors and warlike people

Eko is Yoruba Short for Ereko as confirmed in Osifekunde slave narrative

Ereko Market was where Oba Kosoko Sold Slaves and European goods

Eko is short for Yoruba Word Ereko which means field

Ereko Market is still there on the Island

According to the Osifekunde 18th Century Slave Narratives Ijebu Yoruba called Lagos Eko and Benin called it Kuramo, it also described how the Ijebu seized land from Benin and left only an Isolated part of the Lagoon (Isale Eko ) in Benin hands

Eko Ende in Osun State was one of the Locations of the 1878 Jalumi War, there is also Eko Ajala in Osun State

Interpretation of the Osifekunde narrative from 18th Century

"Captain Horseley called it Eco, and that is how the yebous refer to it; but it is not their land: it belongs to Benin, whom have named it Korame, you can recognise the Curamo from older Portuguese reports, just like Eko represents the Ichoo from Holland Hydrographs. here is the page.

Your Biafran forces were rag tag, they were fighting a war of attrition. Nigeria armed forces is in charge of all security in Nigeria, so no fight between ibo and Edo...tribes with military prowess did their thing when it was free for all, Ibos had no military power. We heard of Benin Empire warriors, Ashante warriors, fulani jihadists conquest etc, I never heard of any prehistoric ibo army before the amalgamation that did conquests. You jungle animals were still hiding in your caves, when we were colonizing other tribes, towns and nations...Shut the fck up, and stop making wishes. Talk reality, you guys never attacked or conquered any tribe in history cos you were weak. Historically strong tribes colonize weak tribes. Once a slave, always a slave.

The IGBOs had no army but yet bini kingdom or Oyo kingdom were very scared and didn't try to invade the IGBOs. grin grin

""you guys never attacked or conquered any tribe in history""

That shows that IGBOs are a set of people who do not take what does not belong to them, They have no greed in dem, IGBOS had small small neighbours whose population run in a few thousands, yet igbos never attacked them or occupied their land.....unlike afonja and bini people who tried to conquer others.

It took the British 32 years to defeat IGBO land which had no army, but took them a few weeks to soundly defeat Yoruba and Bini who supposedly had warriors

We should stop the fight please. History is only there to educate us of the past events and not to vilify any tribe.

Yes, Bini(Edo) was feared and respected among other tribes because of their war prowess and might for conquest but today things have changed. The modern world system of government has changed the narrative. For instance, you cannot wage a war to any people or claim a territory without the support of the government, else you will have the government forces to contend with.

Reno Omokri that brought up this matter was simply addressing the comment made by a Lady who obviously was ignorant of history.

There is no more slave today and such is not recognized in our constitution. According to history even from European authors affirmed that benin had great warriors that fought and conquered many tribes. However, can the Benin's lay claim to any of those lands and people this era?
We should all learn to embrace history and not fight over it.

It was only Lord Lugard and his adamant determination to fight the Slave traders to finish that stood between Igbos ancestors and Slavery

And you don't realise this is the reason Biafra can never be actualised. How many Igbo men became millionaires and billionaires by just having businesses in igboland? Nigeria made so many Igbo men millionaires and billionaires and these people do not support Biafra because of what they will lose. Go and tell Igbo men with businesses in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Edo, Ogun, Delta, Katsina, etc what they think of Biafra!

Look at how the yorubas have rallied round Sunday Ighoho even up to the Ooni of ife forming a committee to help him. What has igbo leaders done for Nnamdi Kanu? They are all distancing from him. This is how your people want to achieve Biafra? Lol. Clowns!

Your people are the most greedy tribe in Nigeria. They will do anything for money. It is for this reason Biafra can never come to pass.

Continue dreaming of Biafra. It's your dream. However, it doesn't change the fact that the igbos were conquered by the Nigeria military comprising of Northern/Western/Mid-western military officers and the igbos remain a conquered tribe in Nigeria. You can't change this! grin

You're d*ft.

(1) The island was named as eko by the Yorubas themselves. ~ Argue with D’Avezac (1845), p.26.

And it has been named as such for centuries before the Binis came. ~ Argue with A.C. Burns (1929), p.44.

Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko.

(2) Lagos island is alternatively known locally till date as Eko-Aromire (as named after the Awori Chief, Aromire of the Lagos traditions).

Moreover, the explorer Ruy de Sequeira came to Lagos in the late-1400s — that is, about 100 years before Benin would have any relationship with Lagos.

Ruy de Sequeira — while in Lagos — encountered the local name Eko-Aromi-re (sometimes: Eko-Aromi-sa) which he transcribed as Curamo (sometimes: Korame). This was in the late-1400s.

Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko.

(3) According to Lagos traditions, the island was first used as an agro-colony (Yoruba: ereko, contraction: eko) by the Awori Chief Aromire.

The Binis visited eko centuries after Chief Aromire had flourished. They arrived in the mid/late-1500s, then camped on eko after having gotten the approval of the native owners.

The fact of their camping on eko explains the first introduction of this word “eko” into their lexicon, and with the meaning of “camp” among them.

Conclusion: Lagos island has been named eko for centuries prior to when the Binis came there. The Binis didn’t name Lagos island as eko.

Having clarified that, some of the places by the same name “eko” in different parts of Yorubaland, are as follows:

Ita-Eko in Abeokuta, Oko-Eko in Ijebu, Eko-Ende in Osun state, etc.

Cheers!

If you add all the little little bit each Yoruba group in the Eastern area received and the ones Eko and Itsekiri received, it would make up a huge chunk. take a tour to eastern Yoruba land, itsekiri and Lagos to see. There are full families who owe their origin to Benin living life as yorubas today.

Edo's migrated from ile ife not the other way round. Itsekiris speak 100% yoruboid language with no trace of Benin language.
