Same experience here. Wish you all the very best. But keep believing and kissing frogs (opportunities) because something can just open up to you through your clients and boom, you're made for life.

Peace to you bro.

When you have mastered a trade, skill or a specialist in certain field

when I started my corporate work at 25, I told myself that I would have my own hustle by 40. The stress that investment banking work brought on me was too much. Waking up by 4:30am and coming back by 10pm. The rat race was simply too much and was taking so much on my mental and emotional well being, even though the pay package and other emoluments were good.It provided me with all the necessities of life and I was financially doing relatively ok.

I registered my own consulting company by the side and was waiting when the side hustle could pay at least 50% of my total salary. That never came to pass as the Solo Consulting space itself is even competitive. Most jobs came through referral. I never got any consulting job based on submission of application. By 2016, I couldn't take it again and resigned to face my solo consulting. This is the fifth year and, I am yet to gross the annual salary I enjoyed when I was still working.

Any regret? No. I have my peace, wake up at my own time, visit my parents and enjoy good moments with loved ones during the weekends without considering the impending coming Monday. I am on my bed typing this, reviewing a document sent to me by a client. My mental and physical health is top-notch and I have developed myself beyond my imagination. Money wise, I am still far from getting what my corporate employment paid but I am far happier now than when I was working in the bank.

Welcome on board bro. Nothing better than being able to spend your day the way you want, set your own pace, when to work and when to sleep.
I worked with Dangote Cement Transport for just five months, I nearly developed stomach ulcer among other things. I wanted to quit but the fear of family and friends tagging one "unserious fellow" wouldn't let me. The man finally sacked us (about 800 employees) after cleaning his garbage and I was about the only employee who was happy for being sacked! I'm glad that I choose this current path.

Yeah, it has not being easy. I have done only 4 jobs for client since the beginning of the year. Total fee is still ok as it could still take care of my bill. I was lucky to have utilised my salary savings very well when I was till in paid employment, at least to get my own house.

Nevertheless, the peace and comfort is priceless. I must tell you. I am just waiting in my house now, chilling to join a UN organised online training for intending consultants in the development and humanitarian sector.

Honestly, that's not good enough. If you are working and receiving the kind of huge salary that those people are receiving, you still don't need to wait until they purse you. Because after your retirement, you might not know what next!
There was this white man working with BP, a top boss for that matter. Coronavirus struck last year and he was asked to go like few others. You knew what he did? He committed suicide! Because he didn't see that coming.

No matter the kind of salary you're earning, prepare your own exit and get ready to leave before they ask you to leave. Don't wait till 65 or the agreed last day. I have been telling my brother the same thing for the past 5 years and asking him about his future plan because the last day in office is slowly approaching.

What's wrong with start your own business and STILL WORKING?

Many of those men have their own businesses incase you don't know. Inshort, all of them.

That means the people you listed above can still quit, they wouldn't be the first to do so.

Yea, sure
But what are the odds?
If they are to leave, it will definitely be for a better pay package or a better media house like CNN or BBC.
Those guys are living their dreams, something millions of Nigerians aren't. I know someone that has been on a particular job for eight years. But he's not even thinking of quitting because he's living his dream. That thing he has always wanted to be, even though the pay might not be in the millions.

Fulfilment bro, fulfillment!

So you’d compare a 50 year old who’s been in the public service receiving over 450k and more

To another 50 year old who’s been working for less than $100 all his life?

Not everyone is cut out for business. Some people are better off in a paid employment till they retire and then live on pension and profit from investments.

Do not be deceived, business isnt for everyone neither is a salary paying job for everyone. What is more important is financial management.

Bravo!

This is a question of income and a person's life goals or desires. This will happen at the point you realize that your life goals don't tally with salary jobs. Nobody go tell you to quit after that. Naa you gan gan go japa and pursue another level of income, because you will be filled with enough fire inside to pursue your life dreams and goals, which most times salary can't affords (except you are getting sth more than your salary from the employment, hence you will stay put. This theory applies to all govt work in 9ja and some other privates jobs too).
The simple truth is just that every good desires, goals, dreams we have got are all possible. It just takes efforts, focus, time (process). The question is can you afford the time (process)? Intentional patience is not our thing in 9ja.

Go and read the third or fourth relpy... Are you living a better life than those bank CEOs, heard of government service and MDs of multinationals who still earn salary

The act that you are self employed doesn't mean you will condemn salary work. Salary work is not bad. It depends on what you are earning as salary.

Its also OK to advice a low salary income earner to start a business and not condemn salary work completely. Salary get levels

My brother salary get level no be lie,nah why I day pray everyday make I get work were them day pay well small atleast.
atleast let me start from somewhere,I am not a graduate ooo,but there is nothing I can do in this life, the brain that God gave me nah something else, who knows if i had gone to university I for don run mad because of book self.I want to make my own money,I believe I will make it soon,(through hard-working).
God bless all the who HUSTLER out there, and SALARY EARNERS also!

Yes, the key thing is to save up well while in paid employment and invest in other things before you go solo. It may not be easy initially as you will literally live on your previous employment savings.

Money is not yet coming as I would have loved but I am quite hopeful.

Wondering why someone will even consider working for salary at any time in this life. You are simply paid salary to forget our dream and as long as one is dependent on salary there is a great limitation to what can be achieve.
Also, unfortunately the school system is training students to work for companies after graduation. We should learn, study and understand entrepreneurship. That's the way to go.
So if no one is trained to work for companies, how will companies get their staff? If we are all entrepreneurs, who would be our employees?

What if you are confident you could achieve more, earn more and be more fulfilled working for yourself than working for a so-called NNPC or CBN?
Imagine collecting an average of 1M naira as monthly salary working with NNPC. In 35 years, you will only have earned 420 million naira. How can that make you compete with an Obi Cubana?

My point is that it's still very possible to have better achievements working for yourself than working for even the best company in the world.
When you work for a company, there will be a limit to what you can achieve; but you are limitless when you are your own boss!
