You are right, China is playing catch-up. American is far ahead but for how long? These things are very difficult things to do and what is scary to the world (especially the West) is that China is doing it so fast.

Just look at the unprecedented progress they have made in the last 40 years.

Few examples;
Infrastructure: In the 90's China has virtually no high-speed rail, today they have the most comprehensive high-speed network in the world. Two-third of all high-speed rail is in China. Also, 30 years ago, China had no motorways, today they have more motorways than any country in the world and they are still building at an incredible rate.

Economy: China has been doubling their GDP every 8 years and has lifted about 800 million people out of poverty (that's like the combined population of the US and EU). They are still growing faster than the US could even dream of.

Others: See their space program— Building a new space station and landing rovers on Mars. These are things people don't believe that China could ever do, 20-30 years ago.

They are also increasing their military capability at an incredible rate. It's scary.

Apple had patents for a lot of things but that did not stop Android. You can Google Apple patent wars over the years.

With time, Google will surpass Apple is that most valuable brand in the world. It is just a matter of time.

Look at the 5G wars between the USA and China. That war led to the USA banning Huawei, a Chinese brand from the USA.
