Two dead as IPOB’s Sit-at-home turns bloody in Nnewi

The Sit-at-home directed by IPOB, early Monday got bloody in Nnewi with two people losing their lives in a confrontation between the Army and suspected members of IPOB.

The unfortunate incident happened at the Izuchukwu junction area of the Nnewi roundabout according to an eyewitness who alleged that the dead was a leader of IPOB alongside a commercial motorcyclist.

Vanguard gathered that the problem started at about 7.00 am when some IPOB members allegedly came out to enforce the Sit at home order and in the process blockade the major roads in the industrial town.

Some unidentified soldiers were said to have rushed to the area to clear the items used to block the roads, and in the process an altercation ensued between them and the IPOB members, leading to the soldiers opening fire on them.

The eyewitness said that the two victims were actually killed by gunshots from the unidentified soldiers, who quickly took off immediately after they fell to their bullets.

However another source told Vanguard that the two people killed were commercial motorcyclists who came out for brisk business but were sighted near the blockade put on the road by the soldiers who started questioning them on why the road was blocked and following jot exchange of words with the soldiers, they were shot by the soldiers who hurriedly left the scene.

Meanwhile, the industrial town has been reduced to a ghost town as the people who initially came out to survey the level of compliance to know if they could open for their daily business rushed back home to save their lives.

Some vehicles were also smashed by aggrieved persons over the attack on the civilians by armed soldiers.

However, a combined team of security agencies as at the time of filing this report later stormed the town to disperse the protesters who gathered in protest against the killing of the civilians by the soldiers.

It will be recalled that IPOB, warned residents of the state against coming out of their homes, following an alleged plan by the military to attack people and branding them IPOB and Eastern Security Network, ESN members.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, for Anambra State command Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached to confirm the deaths.

There were only cannons on the those ex US Coastguard Cutters in the first place and you understand that OPVs roles do not require offensive weapons other then guns. The only module they removed was the outdated Phalanx CIWS - same condition as those given to the Philippines. Do you expect anyone will gift us an fully equipped Air-Defence Destroyer for free hugs?

The Ocea boats from france are armed. I have not seen anywhere in the world where a research/scientific ship is armed with more than a cannon at most.

Yes they where stripped off but we can always re-arm them back, We can always do that through the help of Germany, South Korea etc.

What makes you think I am talking about NNS Lana (It will be armed by the Navy as it also carries out a security role) or making a complaint?

I am talking about the FPB 72 & 110 boats which arrived without canons and were subsequently installed by the Navy. Other navies like the Algerian Navy had theirs delivered with RWSs.

The navy usually install one of the Singapore Technology Kinetics cannons.

BTW, you don't have to go on the offensive even if you disagree.

Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum travelled to Baga, a famous fishing area over the weekend, during which he supervised the resettlement of 500 families that were made up of 1,200 members displaced for more than seven years, by insurgents attacks.

Of the 1,200 family members, 716 women each received N10,000 cash, a wrapper and children clothings, while 486 men received also N10,000 each.

Both the men and women each received a bag of rice, a bag of maize grits and other condiments.

Doron Baga, a fishing community located in the shores of Lake Chad is in Kukawa Local Government Area, and was a major area of economic interest to Boko Haram, during their occupation for more than seven years.

Displaced residents relocated IDP camps in Monguno IDPs until Zulum set up a resettlement committee that was headed by Borno’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan. The committee rebuilt homes and public institutions and began to safely resettle residents, most of whom had been anxious to return.

At the latest resettlement, Zulum addressed returnees at Doron Baga primary school.

"This town was dislodged by the insurgents many years ago. Today, to the glory of God, we are witnessing the first return of the people to their home town from Monguno town of Monguno Local Government Area” the Governor said.

Zulum however warned the returnees that, Government will not condone any form of sabotage from any individual, enjoining them to report any suspicious person or activity, as it is only with their co-operation, that security could continue to safeguard Baga.
