Mad o... I bet non of his lecturer has ever given him such a valuable assignment ever b4 grin

But its amazes me how our young graduates who are supposed to be thinking of how to become an entrepreneur or go further their education to become something great in life (for those who have the resource and sponsorship) are thinking of becoming a uber driver. I wont be surprised the king of the ant will advice the young man to buy a Corolla and start the hustle right away.

I just cant imagine with will become of this country in another 20yrs time.

You are a prophet you see into the future, your prophecy came to pass.

I try my best to quickly chip in my point of view, but decision is left for them.
What happened to dreaming big?
As he thinks in his heart so is he, when you start thinking taxi driver from school what will you become?
I don’t totally blame them, Nigeria has gotten to a level that doctors graduate and don’t have jobs.

There is no way I will advise a young graduate or salary earners to resign and do Uber.

I wonder why it doesn't make economic sense to spend about $40 on brake pads, but they prefer to buy it the knockoffs for 3000 naira.

grin grin grin

CheerfulGiver:
This goes beyond truck parts.

The corolla people are bowing down for and worshipping, how many of them can really afford to buy original Toyota corolla parts? Brand new knock offs have always been saving us.

lols grin these guys...
Yes, like I said it's short term gain.
Few years back I bought original brake pads for 15k at the time. I forgot they use to change brake pads in cars for like 2yrs. Isn't that better than buying 3k n paying workmanship every 3months in the long run?
Right now I am saving up to buy KYB shocks around 100k and rest for another 3yrs instead of buying 50k knockoff that I will change after 6months or 1yr max.
Preference Is a matter of choice and purchasing power but fact doesn't waver. For me it's quality first before prize.

I thirded the advice, driving Uber should be out of the picture for now unless after graduating he couldn't secure a reasonable job then he may want to consider Uber.
So,he can't drive uber while submitting applications here and there and even while doing a 9-5?
I've a friend who's into landscaping, has a degree in horticulture and owns his own garden in Maitama.
When he wasn't getting enough jobs,he took a car on rental and IT TURNED TO A BLESSING FOR HIM.
He'll be on a trip and sees a construction site, drop the rider n come back and drop his card for landscaping job if he doesn't meet the owner or supervisor on site.
That way,he has a wider reach on jobs and prospective clients don't look down on him like 'are you sure he's equal to d task' ?
Now he's rejecting jobs cos he has so many and only puts on his app when he's down on cash due to so many clients owing him.
The money he saves from transporting himself, flowers and labourers to different sites easily covers for his weekly rental.Recently bought d car from the owner sef.
Summary is,being on uber will help his hustle.
He could decide to drive only for 6hrs daily and find his bread, then continue seeking for the job of his dreams.
Adighi akwu ofu ebe ekiri mmanwu!

We are not debating which is stronger. We both know that these ones are stronger.

The discourse is picking a brand-new Chinese over a Tokunboh, and yes, I agree with CheerfulGiver. It makes more sense economically.

I really don't put much emphasis on resale value. Let a car yield my ROI as targeted and move on. Whatever I resale it is an extra.

A brand new Chinese car won't give me headaches for the next 18 months. We cannot say the same for Tokunbohs though
Don't be too sure. My brother has used a brand new 2015 Hyundai elantra and the compressor spoiled within months

Pearl1910 said it'll be better for him to buy a car and put it on rental and focus on another thing... Feli said almost the same thing..... Does this mean that they don't mean good for him??

Anyway everyone is right
Felicity did not say the same thing. Felicity said there is no dignity in being an uber driver. That's what warranted my reply to the guy.

It's right for felicity to give his advice based on the fact that he is an uber driver, but it's wrong for felicity to say there is no dignity in driving uber while he is currently driving uber and refuses to leave it. If there is no dignity in a job, there is no point doing it. Which is why I have no regard for that character irrespective of his age. I say what I mean and I mean what I say.

An undergraduate in Nigeria is not guaranteed a job. But this special undergraduate already has 2m and has identified a side hustle to embark on. The side hustle isn't unknown. There are people who have risen from it and expanded their financial empire from driving. The guy was only asking how to tap into that same hustle. Along comes a fraudulent character saying there is no dignity in it, but is still doing it. A character that's willing to tell how he trains his son in the University from uber driving, so why is he negating what he does to another? Why do people lie online about what they do just to dissuade others from same?

That's what you failed to see about the comment you quoted saying I undermine people.

I may not recommend for fleet, because of the drivers out there. If they can do it to a 2017 corolla, who be 2020 IVM connect? grin

Lolz...Just watch out for those cars. After 3yrs even though they say its only island they will be getting trips. I wish they deployed all of them at thesame time so we know they are all same usage wen we see them

Mr Gentle, For this Nigeria, do you know what it will take for him to get a job, talk more of a reasonable job as a graduate? Do you know that it's now easy for a secondary school certificate holder to get a government job(espercially for applicants under security agencies) when compared to uni grads? Do you know that he may even be unsuccessful applying for that reasonable job even if he tries to bribe his way with his 2m? For me, it's Realities over probabilities anytime, any day. Well, if the 2m guy already has a reasonable job waiting , please he should go for it. If this is not the case, then e-hailing is more realistic.

At least with e-hailing, he can put food on his table, and still apply until he gets a reasonable job. And if he is innovative, hardworking plus business minded, he may find ways to create competition with the existing e-hailing platforms.

You have driven for over a year. You have been driving since the time of Romeo3 according to what you said. Is it okay for me to believe your mentality is messed up?

There is no qualifications needed for driving taxi except hunger and the fear of hunger.

He didn't say he wants to do Uber all his life. He just wants to earn on the side.

Let me even ask: What decision would you consider "thinking outside the box"?

You say he should go for Masters with 2 million. Is it all Masters degree holder that is gainfully employed with Reasonable salaries?

You say he should chase scholarships. Some take more than 9 months to process. Let's not talk about how he would spend money for it, and he may not even get it.

The guy just wants to grow his income. Nothing wrong with that

Just to weigh in on the ongoing discussion, I'm with Pearl1910 on this and will not touch the new innoson. My reasons are stated below

1. The vehicle can only be maintained at the dealership, your average kazeem cannot fix it. If there's something I know about dealerships, it's that vehicles can stay with them for one week because because of a fault that can be resolved by a kazeem in one day. That's extended downtime which is a killer for the business.

2. I know that warranties are not absolute. When something breaks, you start hearing that part is not covered in the warranty or that the warranty for that part has expired. Since you have to rely on the dealership for the part, it will cost an arm and leg.

3. Some of the parts will not be readily available. Sometimes they may have to import them from outside the country.

4. I always plan my exit before I start any business. If I buy the vehicle and things don't go as planned and I have to cut my losses, I'll incur more losses selling the innoson vs selling the Corolla.

Please note that I hate buying used things. If I can afford a brand new corolla I won't even think twice, at least I know the parts are available and the vehicle can be easily fixed by any Tom, dick and Harry

How about a 2020 corolla vs a 2020 IVM connect? It's unfair we are even using a 2006 vs 2020

[quote author=CheerfulGiver post=104608975]resale value of corolla na scam.

A Tokunbo corolla is 2.6. Nigerian used is 1.5

900 minus

Tokunbo Mazda6/Mazda3 Is 1.6 Nigerian used is 850k

750 minus.

Who really lose? .

U will use that corolla 2006 for 7 years and still sell @ 1.5M.

You will use that madza6 for not more than 4 years to be able to get 850k.

It's a beast...that corolla

A Brand new Scania luxury bus is nearing 200 million naira now.

The Chinese knockoffs is about less than half the price of the former.

If both are used to carry the same passengers and collect the same fare, by the time the Scania hits 95 million, the China would also hit the same amount to buy another China.

By the time the Scania would hit the next 95 million, the China would have made the money for the Third one

So in the end of the 200 million generated from both brands, One has yielded two more, while the other one just yielded one.

If you really can't see the point with this example, I really don't know what else to type

angry

The problem is U r still looking from the wrong angle. But u keep saying I am avoiding the main argument.
Pls give us this analysis with a Tokunbo Scania
VS a China luxury bus. When they are thesame price

If u will be kind, tell us also how many years they can both last doing the transportation runs.

Compressor is covered under warranty and would be replaced without him spending a dime, that's not enough reason not to use a brand new vehicle if you have the opportunity.

I was under the impression that you guys are comparing them because they are similarly priced. 2.5m discount price for the innoson vs 2.5m for toks corolla.

If price is the basis, then its not really unfair.

To answer your question, I will be very stupid and foolish to buy the 2020 corolla at 15m or more when IVM connect is available at 2.5m

When you say "Brand new", I'm assuming you are going to get between 2018 and 2020 model.

So you are confidently saying that the parts for this models are readily available. Like... You'll just stroll to Ladipo and you can easily find a sensor for a 2018 corolla?

Offcourse I know Chevrolet isn't Chinese, I am using that example to buttress my point about substandard brand new compared to original tokunbo.

U keep saying there is a reason without saying the reason. The only reason they are buying Chinese is because it's cheaper for them to acquire. Simple. Maintainance is arguable. But in the long run those machines can't last as long as the European, Japanese and american counterparts. So they have to replace them in a short time. Same goes for heavy duty generators. I already made that point clear. The original ones cost twice or three times more.
So if u are talking about economy, its penny wise, pound foolish in d long run.

U have agreed they aren't stronger and I said it's better to do Chinese if u intend to do d business for just a short time. So what are we talking about again.

Sticking to d subject, we r comparing brand new Chinese and tokunbo Toyota of the same price. If those companies could get a good standard tokunbo Toyota hummer bus for the same price the brand new Chinese are going for, I don't think they will choose the Chinese. If they do, they have their reasons probably after a while they give it out on HP to their drivers.

The fact that u sell parts, u should understand what I am saying. People's preference diver because of their purchasing power but the fact is unchanged. You will need minimum two lifespans of that brand new Innosson to compare with a standard Tokunbo Toyota if using it for transportation. So u will spend more if u choose the Innosson in d long run.

Me too, I rest my case. grin
How much is 10 hummer buses and how much is 10 of the knock off?

Transporters have realized that even if it's a 2021 Toyota hiace, the transport fare is constant. If it costs 10k from Lagos to aba but because you bought Toyota, do you think you can justify making your fare 15k to passengers? Does it not then make more sense to buy 10 brand new knock offs than 10 brand new Toyotas?

This discussion will change when Toyota starts assembling buses here like Innoson and the rest.

No, I was actually referring to a brand new everyday corolla which is the subject of the discussion but as you said, it's not even possible to get it so that takes it out of the equation.

The summary of my point is this

05 Tokunbo corolla vs 2020 IVM my choice will be the Corolla
2020 corolla vs 2020 IVM my choice is definitely the IVM

Let me gist u, I lived in a south south state between 2005 and 2011 midway during my stay d state govt launched brand new 07/08 Chevrolet Aveo for transportation, and I was privileged to get one.
The car started falling apart in less than 6months, with no spare parts support and competent mechanics with knowledge of the car, d problem only compounded. We managed to get parts from Lagos but In the end, the car was just not strong enough for the rigours of transportation. Mine is still parked in d mechanic workshop till today. And for many others that owned the car they all parked up within 3-4yrs. I don't think anybody that used that car for transportation completed the payment before the car packed up...that's a state that has 80% of roads tarred, no Ijegun or Akute type of road and no Lekki flood type of water..

.
