The Nigerian Music Industry is one of the biggest and largest in the world. There is an estimated one hundred thousand recording artistes/musicians in the country and daily music releases of not less than 100 songs. Music Fridays in Nigeria culminate in the release of almost 1000 songs. One major goal of Nigeria’s numerous artistes, producers, song writers, back up vocalists etc., is to “BLOW”.

Blow in the Nigerian lingual is not an exchange of physical punches as the reader might think or a terrorist detonating a bomb. Blow in this context is for their songs and creative performance to be known and enjoyed by all and sundry across the country, Africa, and the world as a whole.

Having a nationwide hit in one‘s catalogue is not a small feat for a creative person in the Nigerian Music Industry. The joy of the numerous airplays, fans chanting your lyrics word for word, sold out shows and tours, streaming incomes and all the other perks that comes with being a hot artiste cannot be overestimated. It is only reasonable that all artistes would want to remain at the top spot for as long as they can.

Change is however a constant thing and the dynamic nature of music in Africa plus the large pool of talented and consistent artistes in the country makes maintaining the fame a tad more difficult that gaining the fame itself. It is harder to remain at the top because there are a lot of other perhaps even more talented creatives working very hard to take your spot.

Record label issues, poor PR, laziness, drug abuse, marital issues, scandals, change of musical style etc., are some of the popular reasons why most artistes are unable to manage their fame and end up becoming one hit wonders. Artistes like Deebee of Collabo Fame, XP Pasa Pasa, Sean Tero Choko, Humblesmith Osinachi, AY dot com, Rayce, Don Tom Putu putu among others are pure examples of one hit wonders in the Nigerian music industry.

A lot of A-list artistes also fall off the radar after a while due to the above-mentioned issues and similar matters. A few exceptions do occur where these artistes return to the limelight like the historic 2018 run of Duncan mighty in the Nigerian music industry after recording a song titled “Fake love“ with Wizkid. His run remains one of the most successful comebacks in the industry till date. A lot of other top artistes who fell off have not had similar success despite signing new deals and featuring some of the hot new kids on the block. It is clear and evident that “REBLOWING“ in the Nigerian music industry is not an easy task.

The main question now is for an artiste that has not been popping in the industry for like a year or two and wants to make a comeback to the industry, what are the steps such an artiste can take to make a successful comeback? Why is it so difficult to make a comeback into the Nigerian music industry?

If you start getting the money, friends that won't help your life will start coming, telling you that you have arrived, they will be feeding you with lies that your music is still number one in town, and you will believe them, two years on the line they will still be telling you the same shit. Then financial advisers will come and start taking your time to educate you on how to invest your money etc.

Before you know it, you won't have time to relax and create good music again.




The only way forward is to aspire to be the best, win the awards and have hunger for international fame....not just limit yourself to Nigeria fame...dream to be at the top of the world music, work hard to produce good songs and try as much as you can to be having enough rest and quite times alone...

Never allow the fame and money to get into your head.... And don't envy those non music artists that have made it big!!!

Be yourself, see yourself as still upcoming since you are yet to conquer the world.

I think once you leave the scene, you become obsolete. And when you try to make a come back the "see finish" (we aready know you) factor will set in.

It's difficult but not impossible. KSA, Alhaji Kolington, Adewale Ayuba , Pasuma and KWAM 1 have done it several times. The main thing is to distinguish yourself, have your fan base, nurture them and they will stick with you through thick and thin, even when you are gone like Fela Baba 90, Dipo Sodipo, Dagrin and Baba Ara still have their base.

Asa is the one doing such thing very well in this generation. I know 9ice and Naira Marley are trying too in that respect.

An upcoming artist can make it big and break into limelight with just one hit song , however, its hard to remain relevant for long due to the new releases (by older and newer artists) as well as the fierce competition. This includes producers.

The stardard of music deteriorates and good music will be hard to come by due to the irrationality of the market: For instance, Almost 80% songs released is about women, money and popping bottles. And the few that goes against the grain rarely make it big.

Prior to this harsh reality im the music industry, some smart artist come up with an idea to stay relevant in the industry, this is what they do.

They set up a record label, sign promising upcoming acts, collab with them, finance their project and when that up coming act seems to outshine them, what they do is frustrate their progress by reducing funding therby slowing the pace at which they release songs/albums. The upcoming act gets annoyed and abandons the contracts. This is mostly why most artists leave their record label.

Olamide remains relevant with this technique, although he still releases good musics but what he mostly do is prey on upcoming acts by featuring them, steal their moment and leaves. Smart!

Wizkid just began to the same Olamide pattern by doing a hit song with Tem.

Dbanj did it but it didn't work for him, Also Ice prince Zamani.

So, basically, the only way to remain relevant for long is by using Olamide's method. Works for him well because he can sing and rap, which means he can feature on any body song.

Because preference changes with demographics and time. The demographics you made music for in the past have moved on, so you are faced with a younger demographic than you are use to and their preference is different from what you use to dish out both in lyrics and beats.
