Here is my advise, there is a much higher prospect of getting a great job and settling in the UK based on their recent Visa adjustments for Post graduates.

There is nothing here in SA for now. Unemployment is so very high now and SA has been banned from many countries in the past 1 year. Nothing much for foreigners because even south african grads are struggling to get jobs. It has gotten so bad in recent times. And this SA is way too volatile. If I was in your shoes I'd pick any UK university over the best of SA right now. Look at the bigger picture and forget university rating abeg. That one no epp anybody. Make sure to give your best and come out in flying colors in whatever UK uni you find yourself. Thats all that matters.

Again. if you have a UK option, please go for it. Even funding opportunities sef, very scarce in SA now.

tannystacey has said it all. If you have the funds to make Teeside work, biko don't dull; SA pales in comparison in terms of opportunities, plus, w/ the UK you get a 2-year post-study permit (3 years for PhD). I also got an offer at the Uni of Hull, but I'm unfortunately not able to make it work and that's why I'm on this SA journey (+ a couple other reasons).

Do you have a place at Stellenbosch already?

No not yet.
Canada is my dream destination hence the reason for my skepticism.

1. If learning and getting quality education is your priority, Stellenbosch University wins it. If you are also concerned about the reputation of the university, Stellenbosch is well respected globally.

2. If you have the funds to sponsor yourself through grad school or if you have a budget constraint, I'd advise you to choose Stellenbosch.

3. If you plan to work part-time to fund your studies, go for Teeside Uni.

4. If you are considering to work after graduation, UK now offers postgraduate study visa depending on the number of years spent in grad school.

5. If you are looking for a graduate school with a vast cultural diversity, Stellenhosch is the place to be.

For me, I'll take UCT and Stellenbosch 100 times over most of the schools in the UK. If you are studying a research masters, you will most likely get a grant that will cover your tuition fee at worst case. If you are lucky to work under a reputable supervisor, you may get enough grant that covers your living cost.

However if your survival depends on getting a part-time job, then back your bags and head to the UK.

Regards.

I heard from a reliable source that some South African embassy officials here in Nigeria now collect money from visa applicants. Some individuals in the embassy have turned visas into rackets, this is probably why the visas are harder to get so that people can pay (my assumption) . They charge as high as 900k per student visa.

This has been the case for long now.

Depends on your financial state and if you're willing to look at the big picture. What degree are you going for? Ph.D. or MSc

Stellenbosch is your best bet, easy access to quality research & output if you’re the career building type. Cheaper to study in & you’d be surprised with the opportunities that will come as you progress, besides you may also get part time peanuts work within the sch if your Msc is solely thesis based. You may even get bursary along the line if you continue with PhD. Though there’re many uncertainties, however, after your studies, you can always migrate to any country of your choice. With patience, the degree from that institution will open far more greater heights for you, look at the big picture!

But If you’re a core hustler & need immediate results pls just go to the UK. All the best with whatever you choose.

I submitted on the 5th of March...that's 5 month plus.

List of Document submitted
1. Admission Letter
2. Letter of Introduction from School (University of Witwatersrand)
3. Bank statement (Mine and Sponsor)
Mine had about 260k in it and sponsor had about 5mil.
4. Letter from sponsor
5. Sponsor passport data page, sponsor company's CAC certificate and a letter of introduction stating he would cover my cost of living for the duration of my program
6.Yellow fever certificate
7. Police Report ( Nigeria. I wanted to submit UK police report but it was rejected. This latter created serious concerns for me because this same document was accepted in Abuja visa office. I was worried
8. Letter from Uni stating my eligibility for a Postgraduate Merit Award.
8. Medicals ( Xray, series of tests )
9. Insurance (Momentum)
10. Accommodation reservation
11. Dummy Flight Ticket.
12. A copy of SAQA
13. A copy of my Masters degree certificate.
14..........
I think I also submitted a notorized marriage certificate. I can't remember because I had to argue with those vfs guys then If not, those guys at vfs collected my 4k for nothing.

I actually lost hope and concentrated on some other things. Infact I was going to call for my passport this week and then voila, I got a mail late on Friday that Passport is ready. I give God all the praises. For all that are waiting positive news in Jesus name.

Congratulations to you Funsho.

I also submitted an application for spousal permit renewal on MAY 6th but still haven't received the permit.

The gentleman from the embassy said they are busy finalizing the application when we followed up last week.

He said there are partners/stakeholders they work with on verification of documents and due to COVID -19 most are not at offices daily and thus delays.

But I just personally feel like 16 weeks ( and counting) is just too long to process an application. I am hoping I will receive a notification soon from VFS that the application has been finalized.

I will keep you guys posted on how it goes...Fingers Crossed smiley
