@Aphrodite007 @Justwise What's the best credit card to use for building a very poor credit score? My score has "entered well" due to a water bill I unknowingly owed since 2019. I saw some ccs I can apply for on my experian page e.g. Capital one Any advice? Kind Regards. |

As regards building credit score. I read online that paying utility bills don’t help but when you own or default it can affect it. Correct? |

My only wish was I knew about the whole provisional licence supersedes intl licence and apparently it was discussed on the thread and I missed it. That information might have saved a brother 10k direct debit gbese. 6 Likes 4 Shares |

mrcodebreaker: From my credit report summary, i believe paying all your utility bills on time really helps because nothing is hidden in this country oo. And if any default then CCJ, hence why its advisable you check it often for any major changes. Credit building is a long term building exercise with lots of patience and diligence and within 1 to 2yrs one should be on the right track. 14 Likes 2 Shares |

AirBay: Go to Money Saving Expert - Credit Cards and Loans section. It will guide you as to which cards to apply for and you can even check your eligibility and chances of being accepted for different cards. Capital One often has low limits (not necessarily a bad thing) and very very high interest rates (a bad thing). mrcodebreaker: Somewhat true. One default which gets paid immediately will not affect your rating or be registered. It is when it gets turned over to debt collection agencies, so it gets registered against your credit file and often your address too if it's an owned property. So the defaults have to be sustained enough for the utility provider to sell it on to a debt collection agency |

icon8: Ah, I see you guys had the right idea. Una do well, Fati and co, and thanks for the invite, icon8. Unfortunately the last thread had become overwhelmed, and it was extremely difficult to follow. I'm sure the students will catch up with us here, so for those who eventually do: - please read, read, read, research research, research and only ask targeted questions, biko. Leave out the stuff about career advice and what course to read in the UK (guidance counselling is up to you), or which airline to fly (situation is fluid and you know as much as everyone else does), where jobs are (use your intelligence, the rough rule is the bigger the city, the more the opportunities, but cheap costs of living generally go with fewer opportunities, just like everywhere in the whole wide world, so you can answer the Hull versus Teeside questions for yourselves), housing is difficult to get from outside the UK, when you come here, if you're looking for anything other than student accommodation for one, be prepared to pay rent for months upfront (coming from Nigeria where rent is paid annually, there should be no difficulty getting your mind around the concept), unless the money no dey (which shouldnt be the case if you followed the rules), the digital banks Monzo, Starling et al, are real FSCS-protected banks and your money is safe in them, use them as your first port of call when you arrive, etc., etc. As for career paths, anybody can do anything you are hired to do, apply to anything you feel you can do, manage your expectations realistically and don't expect to get a job in the field in which you apparently get or have had a qualification. For part-time jobs, the usual care homes, or try Royal Mail (Angard Staffing - I think they should have started their Christmas casual recruitment about now), Amazon (pay is good these days, up to 12 quid or so), Reed or Blue Arrow, and of course word of mouth; for full-time jobs: Indeed.com, Glassdoor, Totaljobs, and the Guardian.com Jobs and similar entities, the supermarkets and fast-food jobs as usual (browse and apply online and try walk-ins to local branches), etc. Again, read, read, read, and research, research, research. Try not to derail this new thread, and remember that it is in your own interests for threads like this to exist so you can come and glean knowledge when you need it. Thank you all as you do so. 113 Likes 22 Shares |

AirBay: Try Vanquis card. A friend with really bad credit history tried it and was successful after trying loads and loads of other cc without success. Do your DD first though before applying 16 Likes 11 Shares |
