well, I hope Staad won't be too cumbersome for you. You could start with easier software like CSC Orion, Prota structures. They would make you understand the basics of structural design. before you transition into the best (stabs and Staad) grin

If you don't understand manual design properly, I'll suggests you start form there. Get textbooks and study. Then you can move to the use of softwares like Hakeem has said.

1. Go back to your school books and re-study the design of structural elements both for concrete and steel structures i.e beams, slabs, foundations, columns, walls etc. It's a lot of work so take it one at a time. Try as much as possible to understand what is happening as you study. Watch lecture videos on youtube for topics or subjects you find confusing.

2. Check other study material, textbooks etc

3. For softwares, do not start with staad. Watch videos of designs involving the software you are interested in. Also read the technical documentation of whatever software you want to learn.

The Wood–Armer method is a structural analysis method based on finite element analysis used to design the reinforcement for concrete slabs. This method provides simple equations to design a concrete slab based on the output from a finite element analysis software(wikipedia).

I have had a feel of Robot but not in-depth, o haven't tried etabs at all. As such, I am unable to compare.
