Many people have that fears that if it get into a wrong hand, something wrong might happen later (Some believe it is superstitious ).
Some even believe it must be the husband that must take care of it.
For example some usually use a slang in the Yoruba land that "Aja je ibi omo e" which means "A promiscuous lady's placenta is probably eaten by a dog".

However, I remember a friend told me he threw one placenta into the river when his wife gave birth to her second child as he can't pass through the tedious task of finding where to bury the first one

He also said he can't tell his wife the situation as he don't know how the wife will take the matter maybe lightly or not.

Especially to young guys that are just raising a family. I know that culture varies but in Yoruba tribe for example, placenta are meant to be buried. Buried where? On your land or you have to encroach another man's land to bury that?

some cook and eat it, some bury under a tree trunk.. But whatever you do always make sure you take it with you, don't give it to doctors or hospitals for reason

For this my 3rd baby, lock down didn't allow my husband to take it to my family compound to bury, so we put it in a bucket, added some disinfectant, leave for 3 days and then flushed. Some dissolved, Chai but the smell was horrible

Maybe that's why the Yorubas said it must be buried same day. To avoid the smell after some days.

one must be very careful, placenta is not something you just throw away, in yoruba land we bury it with some native substance like alligator paper 7 seeds and coconut leave incase you are unable to get small clay pot. you also have to be secretive about it.
