Ibrahim Isiaka, lawmaker representing Ifo/Ewekoro constituency in the House of Representatives, and the Vice- Chancellor, Ahman Pategi University, Patigi, Kwara State, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, clashed over the earnings of the National Assembly members on Saturday.

The incident happened at the 10th annual symposium of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, B-zone, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Adedimeji, who was the guest lecturer at the event had declared that Nigerian parliament “is the most expensive in the world.”

Looking towards the direction of Isiaka, who stood in for Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of House of Representatives, the VC said, “With due respect to the Speaker of House of Representatives, Nigeria spends the highest amount of money on the legislators in the world and the national assembly consumes more money than any other parliament in the world.

“A unicameral legislature with two representatives from each state is sufficient. The national Assembly should have less than 100 members including Abuja.”

But Isiaka disagreed with the guest lecturer, saying, it was a wrong perception that the national assembly runs a very expensive legislature.

He said all the money budgeted for the national assembly was two percent of the total budget.

“The money being spent on the National Assembly, and when you say National Assembly, you are not talking about legislators, who are the lawmakers.”

“You are talking about the National Assembly Commission, you are talking about everything, all encompassing, is less than two per cent of total budget of this country, but, nobody, has ever looked at what is happening to the 98.per cent,” he said.

He, however, called for a total re-orientation of national core values, as a way to carve a new agenda for the country.

The state Governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Shuaib Salisu lauded the Muslim students society for organising the symposium at a critical time in the history of the country.

He maintained that the discussion about the unity and integration is everyone’s duty, adding that his administration will do all in its powers to support the Muslim society.

Personal Republic of Nigeria.

A single lawmaker extorts over ₦100m monthly there; they have allowances for everything..even coughing allowances, and absentee allowances...and is still hovering about needing more.

They cannot stop the bloated salaries and allowances or they'll expose themselves and they'd be war because it would look like the person who wants to stop it is putting sand sand for their garri but enjoying yours.

These are the same people who found paying workers the minimum wage of ₦30k monthly (without any allowance attached) as a god-forbid.

Dear electorates,

These people don't give a damn about you; all of them! Why should they? Are you their children or bloodlines?

Stop arguing that this person is better than that person. They are all the same.

You fight over them. They dine together, laugh together, call it politics, and thumb-up any new poli-tricks from the opposition as a smart one.

Then they present it in the news to make it look as though there is an evident disparity among the masses the over-ambitious should consider.

You don't count to them!

Know this, have peace.

Man's government has failed.

The VC is totally right but as usual, nothing will be done about it. Few people will keep robbing the nation blind and watching the economy crumble to the ground because they can easily step into their private jets and run to another country.

Nigeria is a poor Country, spending two percent of our annual budget on less than 500 people is a foolish thing to do.

Professor yeekpa! Why would Lagos and Kano agree to have the same influence on national laws like Bayelsa and Ekiti in a unicameral house?

How can you make 21m people equal to 2m people? And this is democracy?

It's true some people become more narrow minded as they climb the academic ladder.

I don't know who is more ignorant between you and the professor.

Total budget of NASS is 130bn which includes staff salaries and allowances for the 469 legislators. Your estimate of 100m monthly or 1.2bn each per annum is 560bn.

This is how you people spread false information with confidence and long post.

I agree the percentage is significant, but emotions apart, if all the legislators start working for free, most Nigerians won't experience any noticable difference in their material well being. Our problem is far bigger than legislators salaries.

We can have a worthy discussion on whether the duties, responsibilities and obligations placed on legislators by our system is necessary going Forward or requires the huge cost we pay them for it. Should they maintain 2 offices each with full complement of staff, logistics, travels, etc. And should we continue to keep about 2000 staff working in the NASS complex.

No matter how we look at it the cost of running the legislature can't be zero.

Let's sound politically correct with knowledge.

Wakanda rubbish is this

Again,
We will keep saying this : These kids below are the ones that need wardrobe allowance or food in their belly or fuel for transportation to their various schoos, or anything increament in their lives.
And vehicles that will be taking them to and from school.
Not our senators or any , retired, sitting, standing or crawling politicians or any other PARASTATALS,
Or any auditor-general.

Thumbs-up to the Reps in this case.
This is the kinda change we voted for.
Not the previous ones that were there for 16 wasted years, that turned blind eyes to all the corruption that took place, taking our darling nation 100 years back.

May devil punish all corrupt politicians and public servants in this nation.

Did you know that Since 1999,
Nigeria senators earn more than POTUS?
Insane, just insane.
This rubbish must stop.....NOW!!!

We Rise.

The Prof even put it mildly. The nitwit representative put figures behind it to buttress what the Prof was saying (foolishly thinking he was countering the Prof's position), but in real sense, he had just emphasized it further! 2% of national budget for less than 500 persons is outrageously exorbitant. It also speaks a lot about the intellectual capacity of the kinds of representatives we put there - people who can not engage in critical and logical discourse without roping themselves (and the entire nation) into more problems.

We should adopt unicameral

Legislators should be engaged by the national assembly as consultants, in fact volunteers is a better world.

Lets cut the waste. We should eradicate security votes to governors and make them accountable. There should be no immunity for anybody found corrupt, let them resign including the presidemt if found wanting!

Declare security of lives and property a national emergency. Bring in merceneries, the armed forces are overstretched. If they initiate all these trust me we ll move forward as a nation

The VC isn't right at all, as he did not reel out any figures. No references... nothing whatsoever. He could have done better than make such 'watery' statements.

It just turned out that the VC said what most clueless Nigerians want to hear.

Fact is, we tend to often misconstrue legislators for legislature. The former represents individuals elected to represented various federal constituencies and senatorial zones across the country, while the later encapsulates an entire arm of government, including security men, drivers, janitors etc.

Nigerians really need incisive education about these things....not to just 'carry' degrees and heavy educational titles, all over the place.

2% isn't too much for the Nigerian legislature. That isn't our problem...corruption and indiscipline are.
