If you refer to that which Jesus Christ said in John 3 vs 18 -21, it is because the darkness hides the knowledge of their wrongdoing from them, going as far as to justify it to them.

But when in the light, their wrongs are revealed to them - they become aware of their wrong doing and the need for repentance from it.
