Go for M.Sc. Public Health. That's more direct way to go. If you are a working class, NOUN just introduced M.Sc. Public Health and a minimum of 2.2 in Microbiology qualifies you for the admission. Cheers.

My brother, I don't know how financially buoyant you are, try and work small and gather money and go and do your public health outside the country....

I'm a microbiology graduate too, but I have deviate from that course since 10years ago...

Even if you finish your M.SC in public health, you will still be begging to get a job....

But go abroad, health course is very lucrative there, most especially in this period of pandemic, your generation would be glad you did the course when you start making the money

Studying public health in a country where the health care system is already collapsed is completely waste of public time

I know N&grin is a good course sir, but chances of admission for D.E are too slim, that's why I am considering a kind of online university for my D.E.. HNd for N&d are not allowed do internship, so what's now the essence..etc... That's why I want to cross to another course.

There are Schools of Health Technology. They offer a HND in Public Health. They are owned by the federal government and they are in states like Lagos, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Zamfara etc. You can view the full list of schools of health in nigeria here: https://www.pcn.gov.ng/accredited-schools-of-health-technology/

Uniport offers masters in public and you can also apply for a job with an NGO.

How is Public Health Career in Nigeria?

_______
One of those career interests for those with biological science backgrounds in Nigeria is Public Health. Because of career block, you see many people trying to see if they can navigate this path. I was once in that shoe and I can relate.

I see questions on this often and I have created a thread on this on Nairaland in the past and I still get feedbacks from them. I have also written about it on my Facebook wall before.

Okay, to start with..

Public Health is a very fine field and has branches, ranging from epidemiology, to core Environmental issues, Community Health to Nutritional concern from diseases of Public Health Importance to Biostatistics of Health issues and a whole lot encompassing.

I see people with Microbiology, Biochemistry, Democracy and Social Statistics, Sociology etc always rooting for this.

Well, from my experience, because I almost stepped in to it, after my first degree. My Undergraduate Seminar topic was on the Role of Epidemiologists in Public Health and this was an eye opening for me. I enjoyed it and decided I wanted to read more.

I also did an elective course in Microbiology that is related to all forms of public health diseases where we talked about their history, carriers, etiology and lots more. We BCH Students like 7 that Elected that course all had A's and beat all MCB Students that own the course. One of us even had 98%. That course engineered it more.

So by my NYSC days I was already consuming Lucas Adetokunbo Textbook on Public Health (That's Nigeria's no 1 Public Health Holy book).

On finishing my final exam, I wrote down two options of Masters, an MBA or an MPH. I wanted a professional masters even though they are terminal degrees. I actually don't see myself doing a PhD except if future warrants it.

So during NYSC, I was opportune to visit public Health Masters Class at Unilorin usually at Amilegbe hospital. And these are what I realized.

- If you are interested in MPH, chances of admission at Schools like OAU, UI is higher than Unilorin. (Talking about people in South West now)

Four factors are considered for admission; Entrance Exam Score, 2.1, working experience in Public Health field and Clinical Courses have a point.

In that class then, you will find mostly Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurse, Physiotherapist etc and Senior Social Workers and they admit 40 students. My chances of getting admitted was slim and I opted for my second option an MBA.

After weighing your admission chances, you should also weigh chances of getting a job with an added MPH degree.

Are there opportunities for Public Health experts in Nigeria? Yes there are opportunities and they are mostly in the war ravaged zones in Nigeria - In the North.

You must be ready to work in states like the North East and you must have specialization like Public Health Nutrition where you do advocacy and planning on Nutritional intervention program for victims of insurgency particularly at the IDP camps.

These are juicy offers for the brave but you are most likely going to need atleast 7yrs working experience and Doctors are usually more needed. This is why you may carry an MPH degree and it will not be useful for you in Nigeria.

Again, MPH Jobs are usually on contract basis. 2yrs, 4yrs renewable and sponsored by International foundations. So, you may not get that Job security like you may think.

And the rest that are fortunate ones, get places in big Hospitals, and agencies like NCDC, FMH as epidemiologists, Community Health Experts, Biostatisticians etc and usually these are mostly Doctors running away from rigour of calls and routines in hospital wards.

So if you study Microbiology and you want to go and do MPH, you should know all these.

But there is a way out, start volunteering with Healthcare related NGOs and foundations, even though they don't pay you, follow them to field works and in time, you will see places to fit and you might even be taken to some of these poor African countries to help.

I actually don't know opportunities open to people who study Public Health overseas especially in places like US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia etc, but in Nigeria, your first Degree and MPH may never get you jobs easily, except you sacrifice time to work without pay and you need connection to get this and you must be willing to compete with Doctors.

So before you jump on MPH in Nigeria, know what is required. Study Adverts Job Requirements. I hope this helps fsomeone who asked me to write about this.

Good Luck

I just stumble on your post now. You can do a uk level 4 online program in health and social care within 3months with the British School of Management and Science UK and go directly to studying public health as master's in a uk university.

My name is Joshua and I am the Business Development Executive for the British School of Management and Science in Nigeria. Contact me if you interested +2348162378668
