I wrote my final exam in July this year, few weeks later I was in Delta when my course adviser called me to come to school (Uniben), that it's a matter of urgency, I went to school, then I meet her in the HOD office. She told me I failed two courses in my final exam. She said the department is going to upgrade one to "grin" then wave the other one to me but by imprecation I will graduate as a 2.2 student.
When, I thought about it if I should accept it or come back again to write the two courses (one in 1st semester and the other in 2nd semester) to get 2.1. it was a hard decision for me to make but then I made the decision to accept the offer because of the following reason.
1. Uniben is becoming too stressful/ I'm already tired.
2. The financial expenses involved
3. Economics department in Uniben is not a joke.
4. The probability of me getting "A"s if rewrite the two courses is very low.
5. ASUU and strike
Based on the following reasons I accepted the offer, result came out I graduated as a 2.2 student but some how I started feeling sad. Though 2.2 is not the best but then I also graduate myself. I can't come and kill myself ( schooling in Nigeria university is like war).
If I may ask, did I took the wrong decision?
Opinions please!
With this your grammatical blunders, you are a third-class graduate. This is obviously not the UNIBEN we left behind, things are now so rotten, to the extent of having to upgrade failure to D and waiver for another.

You took the best decision because there is no guarantee That will make 2.1 if You stayed. And your Grade does not determine your success in life. There are many 3rd class That are doing good in life. Also You don't need certificate to be successful in life. And lastly You need only school cert to become the president of Nigeria.

The difference between 2.1 and 2.2 is great in the labour market.

There are jobs a 2.2 can't apply for.

If you are a student here, don't make the same mistake.

Even if it is two extra years, stay and get your 2.1.

This is not entirely true... People's path are in life are different, some have a higher grace than others...

How can you say someone should stay 2 extra years because he wants to get 2.1??

Having left the walls of university over 10-11 years ago, I realize a lot of things, except the student is on a 3rd class position!

Look young man. First of all, it's "quiet" and not "quite".

Secondly, even if the both courses were recorded as C after the university policy applies, he would still graduate with a 2.1. Because his cumulative grade would be higher.

For you, I honestly don't have anything to say to you because I assume you are probably in 200 Level.

Enjoy your youth.

In all honesty, I'll say you made the right call. Here are my reasons below:

1. Since you must have an 'A' if you chose to rewrite the course and the possibilities of getting it is almost the reason for not getting it in the first attempt.

2. What you'll achieve or become does not in anyway have anything to do with 2.1 or 2.2.

3. If you chose to go for your masters, universities in Nigeria and even developed countries accept 2.2 directly to masters program. In fact, I know few people who even got scholarships/funds (fully funded) based on their last 60 units credit GPA (last 2 years in university - 300 and 400 level GPA)

4. Las Las, what actually matters is the zeal to achieve your goals, not your grade. (you may not agree now that your grade (2.2 or 2.1) doesn't matter, but if you looked back in 5-10 years time you'll understand better)

You made the right decision brother. Naija no be about wetin u use graduate again. You can have first class and still spend years looking for a good job. Just have connections and you're good to go in this country.

I graduated with 2.2 and I could have upgraded it with a little money but I swore to myself I would never sort any lecturer until I left school and that's what gave me the boldness to proudly accept my 2.2. atleast it was honestly gotten. I'm now preparing to go for masters next year.

One thing I Sha know be say no be by who Sabi book pass, na God dey show mercy.

Many people with masters degree yet have no jobs. No be by 2.2.

My brother...

Results are not God.

Having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is bigger than any result... Testimonies abound for honest people whom didn't even get qualified for things, and God qualifies them.

One must work hard to make 1st class, and if you can't then be on 2.1, and if none, at least 2.2...

No fear. Faith is bigger than any doubt or fear...

I think your question is more about time than it is about grade, is one willing to sacrifice a year for a 2:1 or take a 2:2 and decide on what to use that same year for? If I were a student like you I would have taken a short at a 2:1 but as an entrepreneur today I won't trade a year for a 2:1.

One important thing people don't realise early is that 2:1 merely gets you to the door of employment into organisation, it doesn't guarantee you get the job or succeed in the job. It just get one close enough, which sometimes is all that is necessary.

In today's world a degree doesn't guarantee success in life, investment in self education is what guarantees a future. We have entered into the fourth industrial revolution and not up to 5 university in Nigeria offer courses that pertains to IR4.0, the world is drifting towards alternative energy, Blockchain technology is threatening our banks, data is the new gold etc.

I will suggest you forget about your 2:2 and start working on becoming a global citizen, go check for skills of the future, read about them and decide on one of them to focus on go online and get courses on it the beauty of it all is that many of these courses are free, join forums and professional bodies on your desired skills be active in such forums so that when opportunity comes you will be remembered. If you can follow through with this, before you get deployed for nysc , 2 years after you will be miles away from your peers.

Nothing like wrong or right decision here cux your certificate doesn't guarantee good career or wealth.

Regretting that decision will only pull you back emotionally.

Many 2.2 people are in better position than people with 2.1 or 1st class.

Don't feel less of yourself cause of your degree.

Anything less than A in the two courses will still land me in 2.2

Wait
You can't just sit for the 2 courses without adding some courses to meet with the minimum unit

What if you don't do well in other causes inclusive, it's still going to lower your CGPA.

So don't regret your decision by the way, you have taken the decision already n it can't be changed, this thing you're doing will only pull you back.

@op I don't know what you want to do in terms of career but given the risk you took in my opinion you chose well.

But if you intend to further your education I would suggest you do the following:

Sit for GRE and TOEFL/IELT or GMAT and TOEFL/IELT depending on what course you want to pursue. Please whatever you do ensure you get very good scores. The GRE and GMAT are mostly for US schools whereas for the TOEFL/IELT you will definitely need it for European schools ( Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France).

If you have interest in econometrics I can send you a link to a school were they offer it in English with very low tuition and occasionally they do have scholarships .

With your 2.2, good score in GRE and/or TOEFL/IELT, good statement of purpose and very tight reference letters you can get admission to good schools for MSc abroad.

NB: I am one of those that usually ask young driven people to leave Nigeria before your talent wither before your very eyes. Nevertheless, if you have something great going on for you in Nigeria or you believe in the Nigerian dream, you can stay back and build a great career based on Naija level with your 2.2 don't panic.

I know of a guy back then that got into the Standard Chartered Graduate program with a 2.2 and they did excel in the program.
