Odidigboigbo: There are many reasons why apples are not commercially planted in Jos: it's complex to grow apple unlike other temperate fruits/veges (strawberries and black berries). It's highly capital intensive too, hence the cost. People that grow it in Jos are very wealthy people that just want to show off.... It also takes more time before the trees starts producing, so some of the local farmers don't have that patience to wait years before trees start germinating. That's the reason why other temperate vegetables/ fruits like cabbage, carrot, berries and strawberries are priotized. Demand is also a reason. 13 Likes 1 Share |

Limassol: Strawberries grow very well in the plateau and some few parts of kaduna... It's easier to grow strawberries now in commercial farming unlike it's apple counterpart. Apple farming is very complicated, one wrong move and you loose the seeds... They both (strawberries and apple) will thrive on temperate regions like Plateau and Mambilla,.. but who will have the patience to grow apple that might not yield well? |

richmond500: These are areas the govt should facilitate to get income in Billions but all, including those northern States are lazy going after'Crude Oil' that has been mismanaged since Independence! Even the Cotton business has gone with the wind. The govt is wasting Billions of Dollars searching for Oil in the Chad Basin, while the World has since moved to Electricity, yet Nigeria is stuck as we don't even have it.Jusk as Tesla Motors! The reason why apple do grow in Jos is because of the weather like Europe,S/Africa,cold and cool. Until Babangida regime turned the Jos people against one another and till date violence in Jos is unabated because those who don't own the land wanted to be leaders there and Jos never remain the same! 1 Like |

Cybertext:Your reasons are not attainable. It's capital intensive, how? It takes more time more time before the trees start yielding fruits? Is that an excuse? All commercial trees take a reasonable time to produce. Trees like palm, cocoa, Orange, rubber, kola nut, etc. These trees, take years before they start producing, yet we grow it here because they can be produce in commercial quantities in our climate. The truth remains that Apple cannot "survive well" in Jos. 7 Likes 1 Share |

It grows in other parts of the country apart from Jos, even in Lagos, it is what I saw in my cousin's compound, only that it won't produce fruit, cos the budding of the flowers takes place when their is fall in temperature... Another plant you may not believe that it grows in Nigeria is wheat |

Can Apples Really be Grown in the Tropics? It is a shock to many people that yes, apples can be grown in a tropical climate, and have been grown by the millions for decades. This goes against the conventional wisdom that apples need between 800-1,000 hours below 7° C. (45° F.) in order to break dormancy and set fruit. But experience has shown that using tropic apple culture methods can fool the tree into thinking that it's chilling-hour needs- whatever they may be- have been satisfied and it will then blossom and fruit. You still must be choosy about which varieties to plant, and the tree will act much different than in a cold climate, but the end result is crisp, juicy, tasty apples. It was then assumed that apples could be grown only in the highland tropic areas that receive quite a bit of cold weather, but not down in the lowlands with the heat and humidity. However a three-year study¹ in Nigeria and Southwest Cameroon proved that this was wrong. In that study 18 localities in Nigeria and 8 in Southwest Cameroon comprising both cool highlands and hot tropic lowlands were selected and planted with the apple variety Anna and a pollinator. Several different cultural methods such as planting density and irrigation were employed at each location and an evaluation of the fruit pack-out was done at the completion. Researchers were surprised to find that some of the warmer lowland areas produced well, and the limiting factor was not temperature, but excessive rainfall. Heavy rains during blossoming prevented pollinating insects from flying, knocked the flower petals and young fruitlets off the tree, and led to problems with foliar disease such as powdery mildew and scab. Better results were obtained with areas with less rainfall but with the potential for irrigation. http://www.kuffelcreekapplenursery.com/applestropics.htm 6 Likes 2 Shares |

@OP u re such a funny person. Why would you expect Apple to grow in a country being ruled by the highest hierarchy of wicked of the wicked leaders in the World? Apple cannot grow in a nation being governed by Buhari the wicked general from Niger republic, the desert land where nothing good thrive. Buhari has transferred the wickedness of Nigerien to Nigeria. Had it been a righteous leader is governing Nigeria , by now Apple would have been growing in Southern Nigeria. It cost God nothing to make Apple fruits to grow in Yoruba land. He has given us varieties of Apple trees already. We have agbalumo, cocoa, coconut, orange, guava, lime and lemon, grape, tangerine, etc Apple can grow in abundant in our sea shores. Apple grow in Lagos Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo, coz we are children of God. 1 Like |
