KVN1: Good evening everyone. I just left school yet I still feel so inadequate because of a lack of skill. I really wish to become a penetration tester, but I don't even have an idea on how to go about it. I don't have any background in programming so please I need the advice of everyone who can help, even with companies where I can learn it.
You can't be pen tester without being a Pro Programmer bro.
So over half of the posters think penetration testing is about fvck. No wonder they said Africans are only good at fvcking and making babies.
Go school, you say na ashawo house you wan go. You finally go school,na inside ashawo house you go do your IT. You graduate,na for ashawo house you go do NYSC.
OP go to the linked in profile of Pen testers, try to emulate them in everyway while building experience over time.
kambili999: The title got me scared. But thank God
Sorry, I really don't have a contribution to your question. But I would love to learn from comments
Which comment will you learn from? The ones made by weird nairalanders in this thread? Except you will love to learn from their weird comments about the other type of penetration they have already turned write-up into.
First of, you canot break into a system you don't even understand how its built.
To break into a bank, you must understand how the bank operates, so likewise to penetrate computing system you must understand how the systems work.
- Learn Computer Networking and how the TcP/IP works, how packets gets routed.
- Learn the Windows OS, Active directory and how it works
- Move to Linux, master the Linux shell
- Move to Basic scripting (bash/python) you don't actually need this to start tho. Infact you can make excellent money without knowing how to script but to hit elite status you need to know one.
- Once you have mastered those. Get a Kali Linux OX, visit Udemy and search for the cyber mentor by heath Adams. He is the most recommended and the easiest teacher to follow.
Follow his course like a disciple following Jesus. Pratice pratice pratice....
In 6months you would start doing dangerous things.
In all you do, remember to play legal, otherwise your fellow security boiz and girls will nab you and hand you over to EFCC

Six steps to becoming a penetration tester
Self-analysis: Penetration testing is not for everyone. It requires exceptional problem-solving skills, a dogged determination, dedication to detail, and a desire to remain continually educated on the latest trends in the field. Successful ethical hackers must possess a high level of each of these qualities in order to excel. So be honest in the self-assessment before deciding whether pen testing is an appropriate career.
Education: At one time, many employers were known to hire real-world hackers, and convert them from the “dark side” to work for the good guys. In recent years, however, college degrees have become near mandatory for penetration testers. Undergraduate degrees in the various disciplines of cybersecurity all provide viable entryways into the field.
Career path: There are several ways a would-be pen tester can break into the cybersecurity industry. Starting out in security administration, network administration, network engineer, system administrator, or web-based application programming, always focusing on the security side of each discipline, will provide a good foundation for pen testing.
Professional certifications: Employers predominantly want to see a number of professional certifications on the resumes of assurance validators, and this is particularly true with more senior positions. Several organizations now offer widely-recognized certifications for penetration testing occupations. Honing the craft: Becoming an expert in a chosen field is a good idea in any career, but for penetration testers, there are varied ways of standing out from the crowd. Being active and recognized in cybersecurity disciplines, such as bug bounty programs, collecting open-source intelligence (OSINT), and developing proprietary attack programs, will all get pen testers recognized among peer groups. Keep current: As with most cybersecurity career paths, it is vital to remain current with what is happening in the industry. Keeping skills and knowledge up-to-date with all of the latest trends in programming and network security, ever-changing hacking techniques and security protocols, popularly exploited vulnerabilities, and anything else happening in the cybersecurity industry
Last year, penetration testers ranked as one of the three most in-demand jobs in the growing cybersecurity job market. To become a penetration tester, a university degree is not necessary since it’s a skills-based profession. Employers want professionals who can demonstrate the required skills, regardless of education. Cybrary offers realistic, virtual lab environments where you will gain real-world, hands-on skills you will use as a penetration tester. Within the labs, you’ll use today’s latest tools and technologies; and, with help from a mentor, receive the guidance you need for your new career path.

I think I'd be right if I said you need to be a certified ethical hacker (CEH). You don't have to know programming but you need the basic knowledge like concepts, database scripting etc. Good luck

These children of hate will cry after learning that you don't only grill, you're good with this too.
To become a penetration tester in Nigeria is quite easy but there are certain things you need to acquire or do.
First, your gbola must not be less than 7 inches. A long sleek gbola is a plus. You also need to write to the association of virgins chairlady in your state to grant you license or clearance.
A first hand experience with Oloshos is a plus. You might have tested different grades of kpekus all around.
Remember that testing of these kpekus is done without wearing rubber. So you have to be careful because the job is very hazardous and risky especially with Nigerian clients.
Also remember that no matter the skill you acquire in penetration, you can never get to the bottom of the kpekus especially if the lady is slim. The well is limitless.
I wiah you the best as you start. Incase you have any challenges, you can always reach out to me. I have been penetrating for twelve years.

I really wish to become a penetration tester, but I don't even have an idea on how to go about it. I don't have any background in programming so please I need the advice of everyone who can help, even with companies where I can learn it.
Start from YouTube. Type this search phrase into YouTube's search bar: freecodecamp penetration testing.
For example, this is a 15hr course on the topic. You can finish it in a month or three months depends on how much time and effort you have.
After that you can search for a reputable learning platform to take their course and get a certificate. I strongly recommend Edx.
Then, practice, build your portfolio on LinkedIn and GitHub and apply for jobs.
And, please, DO NOT be intimidated by those saying you don't have a chance because you don't know this or that. The fact is we were all born empty headed, everyone started from a spot.
I remember when I started learning html in 2017. Today I've built over six Django applications and I crunch data with Pandas like I was born with it. That's not to talk of my QGIS and ArcGIS skills.
In summary, all you need is consistency and hardwork. As long as you keep learning, you'll be fine.
Truth is, OP is just name dropping. He has NO idea what a Pentester does. Zero Linux SysAdmin knowledge. Zero Kali Linux knowledge. A prospective Pentester would already have done some pre-work on all of these. I bet if i throw a bash script at OP he would be clueless
Big shout on the RPi comments. 6 RPis on the homelab and I never belleful. Getting a Miniserver on Monday
Calm down. I believe it's normal to start as a name dropper. Everything starts from somewhere.

it sucks reading gabbages on front page, at least if you don't know how its done can't you know what it is ? can believe Our youths are still Dumbfvk in this tech edge, that's how some are discouraging me to go into tech as a female. smh
Install Kali Linux then get lots of udemy courses, stay consistent and within 2 years you should be readito crack 4digits passwords, use DDOS,DOS,social engineering, etc as basics
Op, while you're waiting for someone to put you through, why don't you go on YouTube and download video tutorials on Pen Testing and while you're at it, you can just start learning Java too.

Caseless: These children of hate will cry after learning that you don't only grill, you're good with this too.
You do know that all of that was lifted verbatim from a website without referencing, attempting to pass someone else's work as his. Unless you are saying he is good at plagiarism
Calm down. I believe it's normal to start as a name dropper. Everything starts from somewhere.
It's not. Majority of those who come on this platform asking about Ethical Hacking and PenTesting are all malicious folks trying to cloak their intentions. If you really want to be a pentester you would have since started using Linux Command line and be conversant with Kali Linux
