Transcripts were coded by a team of trained researchers for the presence of villainizing language (e.g., mention of legal infractions, involvement in extremist groups), and victimizing language (e.g., mention of mental health issues, lack of friends). The results were consistent with our hypotheses: the news sources tended to villainize Muslim shooters while victimizing Non-Muslim shooters. Additionally, the news sources more frequently reported the race/nationality and religion of the shooter if they were Muslim as opposed to if they were non-Muslim.
