To allow hawkers or informal traders to basically colonize streets like in west africa, set up in fronts of shops, and basically overrun the city - will mean killing formal sector or stunting it - leading to situations you find in west africa - with almost no private sector worth talking about.

In Europe and elsewhere - hawkers or informal traders are allowed to set up on specific days or times - they are not accepted as way of life.

This model Nairobi need to adopt - instead of banning hawking - they should be allowed to set up says in the evening on some streets - and on weekends.
