Torture2020:
[s]You ever heard the expression, “Monkey no fine, but e fine for him mama?”.

I have traveled around the world. I currently live in Accra. I’ve lived in other cities, including Abuja. One thing I will tell you for free is that Accra is a nice city. Just like most cities around the world, Accra has its beautiful parts and ugly parts. You can find that in every city. In Abuja there are places that are a complete eyesore, just like parts of Accra and nairobi.

For me it is childish to talk about fine cities when a country is mired in poverty, unemployment,violenc3, corruption etc etc. Oslo for example is not a mightily “beautiful “ city, but most of you will die to live in Oslo. Personally, I prefer a livable city. A city where things work. A city where security is a priority. A city that boasts of regular electricity grin a city where moving around is impossible.

your country should not build houses that are more than three story buildings. Where is the electricity to power lifts? grin[/s]

Which infrastructure is in Accra? The small sewage network in CBD has been discontinued. The city is plagued with dumsor power cuts. Everywhere is dumpsite right to the beaches - the country is choking in plastic bags - and everywhere is hawker selling everything on earth - most of which are imported goods. Maybe the donated George Walker Bush Highway? Outside few areas - the rest is unplanned hodgepodge of buildings.

Give me Abdijan and Dakar any day. I think Ivory Coast is the most promising country in the entire west africa. Their civil war set them back 10yrs but they are back on track. Next would be senegal. Ghana is all talk and no show - it failed the kazikazi picture test.

Ghana only look good when compared with Nigeria. But Ivory Coast and Senegal are more progressive and promising.

vankelvin:
My take on this issue.

Per the little I know, cities in West Africa in the 70's to the early 90's were not that great nor bad either. Surely Abidjan and Dakar were up there(All thanks to France). Lagos just as Accra were okay. Non was super nor above the other.

Lagos City transformation started under Governor Babatunde Fashola in the 2000's and Lagos has developed into what it is today.

Abidjan and Dakar on the other hand have not seen much development like it did in the 80's and 90's. If you compare these two Francophone cities of 90's and 2021 to Accra and Lagos of 90's and 2021, it's only a desperate i^dio^t(an asylum seeker) who has no hope for his fatherland, who lives in another man's country will say Abidjan and Dakar are developed than Accra.
Maybe you want to compare their old infrastructures to the modern infrastructures of Accra.

If it's about city planning, my answer will always be the same, Accra planning isnt that great, but for development! unless you are blind and a hater.

No country develop by growing informal sector - informal sector grows almost by default as poor people need to eke a living either way.

The way to growth is support informal sector to become micro-enterpises (SME) then to grow to medium enterprises then eventually to companies and hopefully to have them expand regionally or export - become multinationals.

Unless Ghana has a plan to convert informal trader to own a formal shop - that shop to become small supermarket - that supermarket to become small chain store - eventually national chain of stores - then expand regionally to say Togo or Nigeria - you're going nowhere.

Informal traders should be supported by providing them with credit, savings training and necessary support to grow.

The best way to do this is to organize them into cooperatives - like Kenya is doing. I can give you many examples of kenya cooperatives in many sectors - that have given small iinformal traders - the bargaining power or economies scales of big coorporation - have mobilized savings - provided credit - and have improved the fortunes of those traders - with some eventually become medium, large and even regional players.
vaxx:
informal sector is an anchor of development in west africa state and it is presence in every part of west africa including cape verde which might be considered most developed west africa state .

I will not say Accra is better than Lagos neither will I say Lagos is better than Accra but indeed at this time, private sector are actually doing well in Accra , and the real estate development is catching up comparable to many africa city. Per development, Accra has supercede Abidjan long time ago. By fitchratings, the construction and industry value of Ghana is currently worth 9billion and that of ivory coast is around 5 billion dollar. Per capital wise , Ghana even did well than both Nigeria and kenya which are 55 and 10 billion respectively.

Informal sector in Ghana has come to stay as it is seen as one of the most effective way to relax extreme hunger and poverty. Government should rather developed a framework that will help in developing informal market so that both employee and employer can be carry along in the development of the country and again , the kind of informal market established in Kumasi is also needed in Accra . Four of it in Accra and two in Kumasi can be very interesting.

Construction Industry and Value

Nigeria - $55 billion

Ghana - $9 billion

Ivory Coast - $5 billion

Kenya - $10 billion

Ethiopia - $26 billion

Source: @FitchRatings

This is kejetia market in Kumasi . It is purely informal. Likewise , I agree with you on the paving of inner roads .

Your govt came to learn supporting micro businesses from Ghana .....

We are king in that and that is why our people are doing better.

Anyway, when will Kenyans start opening businesses so that your govt will have something to support?

It shouldn't be always about kenya vs others. Let others also juggle with the debate as we watch. On a good note bro cool

It will trigger some back and forth tantrums.

Despite Ghana being almost arable - and with so many minerals - you have almost as serious poverty as kenya - which is barren semi-arid and arid - and with no minerals.

grin grin which previous Kenya ? grin grin

Ghana poverty is at 19%, I don't remember Kenya ever reducing poverty to this low.

Despite all of Kenya mineral resources and arable lands, it still can't raise people out of poverty because your govt is too lazy to invest in irrigation and the lands that could be used for profitable stuff have been sold to foreigners who are only interested in growing less profitable stuff like tea.

Mineral is not what raise people out of poverty, Market does.

When you do the, the you'll realize why Africa has such level of poverty ...

How will Ghana reduce it remaining poverty when it has countries like Kenya around it, a country that does not even know how to reduce it poverty?

I didn't know 2400 dollars and 1900 dollars were the same per Capita..

Nearly every country that has minerals like Ghana has got out poverty except in parts of Africa. Even countries with 1 million people do it even faster. Minerals give you the capital - for free - required to lift people out of poverty - by investing in people, infrastructure and their business.

Ghana GDP by end of this year will be 75b divided by 31M people (recent census). Kenya will be 109B against 50B - so it about 2400 versus 2200.

I was in pro-Ghana - until it failed KaziKazi picture test. I used to think it was one progressive nations. I have now had time to dig a lot more on Ghana - and realize it one hopeless country like Nigeria. Africa leading gold producers yet it look shietty.

Look at the electricity sector - they claim to have hit 85 percent - only to realize that their leading electricity distributor only has 3.5-4m customers - in a country of 31m people with possibly 8m household. That is 50 percent. This ONE OF THE MANY LIES THAT MANIFEST IN PICTURES.

I checked their water...only 0.5M meters in the entire country. This is a country with 8M households according to their last census...average household size is 4 people.

Sewage is totally absent.

I knew Senegal and Ivory coast were doing well - but Ivory Coast went down with wars. But I have seen it recover. I have seen many ivory coast products in Europe. I believe unlike Nigeria and Ghana - the lack of minerals - has given them sustainable organic growth.
