Question for the pros.

So last time I entered Nigeria I used my Nigerian passport.

It has since expired. I turned it in to immigration for renewal but as usual there’s a delay.

Am I correct in assuming that I can leave the country until I have the renewed passport in my hand? Or can I use my USA passport to travel out? I’m assuming that they’ll inquire how I got in the country.

Or is there any other method because I need to do a quick trip.

Thanks for all intelligent responses.

Technically, you only need your US passport to travel to the US but for some reason Nigerian customs always insist on seeing your Nigerian passport even when exiting the country. This is unnecessary and I’m sure as long as you spend money at the airport you will be okay. You need to have your expired passport to hand though.

The expired one was submitted for renewal so I don’t have it.

As an American citizen it’s illegal to travel out of the USA on a non USA passport. I’m assuming it might be the same here.

I've read about the hassle Nigerian immigration give people without their Nigerian passport or visa to show entry, apparently some have been able to avoid the hassle by showing proof they are in the process of renewing their passport- paper works, officer on speed dial etc etc

its a big mess, backlogs everywhere, passport expired April this year and cant face the hassle of the High Commision here especially with all the stories and procedures changing weekly

That’s the other part.

I’ll have to process a Nigerian visa from the USA to get back in.

I’m not sure about this because I can already think of a scenario where you could be a citizen and not have a US passport but need to travel. I’m British citizen and I have travelled on my British passport alone before - only difference is I had my expired Nigerian passport on me. I don’t think any Government in the world has the power to stop you leaving to a country where you are a citizen. Makes no sense. Even if you did enter illegally all that can happen is being deported which in reality is the same. Go to the airport with plenty of spare cash and you’ll be okay. Take evidence of your passport having been submitted for renewal though.

I think I’ll buy the ticket and do my C19 stuff and hope for the best.

This is interesting.

You mean I can get a Nigerian entry visa after the fact on my USA passport?

Where can I read up on more of this?

Thanks.

Here are my findings in case it can help others.

Scenario is expired Nigerian passport and USA passport with no Nigerian visa on it. I was in Nigeria and unable to get my renewed passport in time.

I presented my USA passport to the airline to check in for the outbound flight.

When I got to Nigerian Immigration I presented my USA passport. The very nice and beautiful Officer looked through it and asked how I got in without a visa. I told her I have a Nigerian passport. She looked at it and announced that it was expired.

Here’s the critical question she asked me, “have you made any attempt to renew it?”. I answered yes and presented my paperwork which was the receipt page from capturing.

She looked through it, punched a few things in the system and wished me a good flight. They are very well aware of this no booklet thing because I overheard many with the same issue.

I should have travelled months earlier when tickets were half price from what I paid but Gods time is the best.

Good luck on your travels.

Update:

Things fell apart on my return trip.

When I got to LAX I was refused a check in on the face that my Nigerian passport was expired. It took twenty minutes of calm “discussion” to get them to escalate to Houston and ask there. I knew the folks at Houston would be more knowledgeable about Nigerian issues than Los Angeles so I asked to at least be taken to Houston. However the angel tgat they spoke to in Houston told them that as long as I have a permit to fly from the Nigerian government then I’m good. I had it if course.

So they finally boarded me.

Here is the kicker, when I got to Lagos I was again flagged to secondary immigration inspection to explain why I’m traveling on an expired passport. The officer then apologized that they did not have booklets available when I wanted to travel. This was shockingly good service from Nigeria Immigration.

Oh, my passport person called me three days after I got to the USA that my passport was ready.

So those are my trials and tribulations on traveling on an expired Nigerian passport during Covid. If I did not have a Permit To Fly document due to Covid I wouldn’t have been allowed to board,

Safe travels.
