Hello guys, Though it has been 5 years since I rounded up my NYSC, and ever since then I have been hustling. I want to further my studies abroad and I would like to know if I can be able to secure an admission for Masters degree with my HND(Upper Credit) result directly without PGD? |

PENNYSWAP:Even the so-called Americans make lots of grammatical blunders, a professor of English do make grammatical errors sometimes, and if you should write up to seven lines in your reply to the OP, I'm sure there will be more than 3 errors. To make matters worst, u lack the morals to correct people. If u are to be an English instructor, u'll be so horrible at it. 6 Likes |

PENNYSWAP: Actually, "an HND" is correct, and more appropriate than "a HND". I understand you're probably looking at it from the perspective of vowels and consonants, in other words, you have been taught that words that start with vowel letters are preceded by the "an" infinite article, such as "an elephant," and words that start with consonant letters are preceded by the "a" infinite article, such as "a boy." However, that teaching is incorrect. The letter does not determine the preceding article. What determines the preceding article is the sound, that is, a vowel sound or a consonant sound. For example, "European" starts with the vowel, "e" but you don't say "an European" because it does not have a vowel sound; instead, it has the consonant sound, /ˌjʊrəˈpiən/. The same applies to HND. Although H is a consonant, the sound is /eɪtʃ/, therefore, it has a vowel sound. For this reason, the right pronunciation would be, "an HND," not "a HND." The same is the reason why you will say, "A United States citizen" not "An United States citizen". Even though "u" is a vowel, the sound is /ju/ which is a consonant sound. Therefore, you have phrases line, "a union," "a unit," etc. and "an umbrella," etc. 14 Likes |

ClixMaster: Don't mind him. You're correct. "An HND" is right. See my explanation above. To your question, yes, you can go directly to a master's degree in the US with your HND certificate from Nigeria. My recommendation is that you start with a WES evaluation. WES will evaluate your HND degree and most likely return it as a US bachelor's degree. This will make you eligible for a US master's degree. If you need any more help on how to go about this, let me know. 3 Likes |
