Over 400 Water Projects Abandoned – Senate Committee

The Senate Committee on Water Resources says there are about 400 abandoned water projects across the country.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Bello Mandiya, disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday after the budget defence session by the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu.

He said some of the projects were cited in places where dams could not be constructed.

He said the ministry had prioritized the projects and had so far identified 20 of them, which would be completed soon.

Mandiya said: “The minister, on the assumption of office, met about 400 water projects scattered all over the country. Some dams were even cited where dams cannot be constructed.

“What he did was to prioritize and he has been able to complete some and decide to do about 20 others from now till the end of his tenure. So, the ministry is very clear about this.

“If we compare and contrast what this government has done with previous governments in the water sector, you’ll realise that this government has done very well.”

Honestly....

Always installing solar panels on community water with no one to manage it...

One that was built within my locality here 2019 stopped functioning 2020.
Funny enough, it's a world bank project...

Who gets to manage such stuffs.
It's not just about building and donating, how'd it be run?

That's how they swindle money in the name of carrying out projects and end up not working on any at all. May God judge them all for inflicting such pains in Nigerians

Government is a continuous process but Nigeria has a problem with continuity. Every administration comes with their own projects, completes some and leaves some uncompleted. The next administration comes on board with their own projects instead of carrying on with the previous projects. The administration of President Buhari has done its best by making sure every project that was started by his administration and other administrations in past are completed. The completion of most railways and other policies started many years ago from the administration of ex-president Obasanjo down to former President Goodluck Jonathan. Kudos to His Excellency for his efforts in making sure projects left untouched are completed and functioning.

Nigeria. A.contractor's paradise where those without an iota of interest are given full responsibility for the most important of investments. How is this system expected to work.

Only through a concerted system of restructuring will resources be alloted to responsibility.whereby those who die of water borne diseases and waste away in thirst will band together and be supported to effect these projects, not some villan close to the corrupt corridors of central power.

The absolutely ridiculous reality today is that there are countless communities out there where humongous amounts of money have been allocated for basic services over the decades that have no inkling whatsoever that these projects have come and gone with nothing on ground.

How can this ridiculous scheme of things continue regime after regime and election after election without a shred of inquest.

What a docile nation of conquered peoples, suffering, struggling and smiling to the polls to repeatedly empower their taskmasters.

LG are not encouraged enough. otherwise, Maintenance of such projects are for the Local Governments. but that is a story for another day because of our weak institutions and inability to checkmate our leaders.
