The watch word is EQUALL OPPORTUNITY, does that exist in GERMANY
I once asked a guy here to tell me how many Nigerians he knows who are Police, Navy,Aair force, Immigration officers or Prison officers in Germany and France, up till date we are waiting still

To me, expecting equal opportunities on foreign soil is even far-fetched sef. I think most people basically emigrate for economic reasons. E. g, most Mexicans that brace all manner of life-threatening hazards just to cross into the u.s aren't expecting equal opportunities per se, but rather job/economic opportunities. Everything else pales in comparison. I think a lot of immigrants fall under this category. They want to work and send money home in peace. And don't mind doing what many locals would consider as menial jobs to achieve that. Such folks don't care much for how tarred their host country's roads are, or how constant their electricity is. Such comforts would hold little meaning to them if they can't work to improve their economic status.

What I meant was simple, Places like Germany, what you can do to excel is relatively small, Imagine a country where its hard as a non Eu person to get into their civil service proper!

Tax in Germany is very high. True.
Germany has the biggest economy in the whole of Europe. True also.

Foreign students/nationals don't get good paying jobs in Germany? Very false. I personally know at least 5 Nigerians who are doing fine in Germany. A couple of them are close to me. One even got the job as banker while in Nigeria, and he wasn't speaking German. There are Nigerians already there who help there HR recruit from Nigerians by referrals.
Now, aside, Canada, UK, US, Australia, how many 1st world countries are English speaking countries? Does that mean that anyone not going to these few English speaking countries are not doing fine?
Even UAE, you will be astonished to know how much you can earn as a professional...professional not odd job workers. And yet English is not even UAE official language.

And talking about individuals, don't say what you are not sure of

Europe in general is where your skills will make way for you.

His point is valid. Taxes are very high in Germany, up to 50%. The companies you mentioned are big corporates. Smaller businesses find it harder

Germany is not a place for capitalism. The country is built on socialism

See this zombie.

Say what you know! It still shocks me that a typical Nigerian (especially a BMC) would adjudge taxation evil. No, Sir! Germany and a lot of these first world nations are self-sufficient because taxes are put to good use. They even have enough to loan your lifeless President.

But no, Nigerians want to enjoy the good things of life, or the lack thereof, without paying taxes.

Seriously the way Nigerians complain of Taxes abroad marvels me and I keep asking, Do they want all those good basic amenities of life for free or what

Good evening nairalanders! I hope you had a good day?

So, let me just go straight to my reason for opening this thread, and I hope I would be able to convey my thoughts impeccably:

It seems like some of our people who travelled to Germany aren't doing so well after all (I stand to be corrected, though!)
I have a friend over there whom I am preparing to go meet. This guy has been there since 2017. He hardly calls me on normal call. He would rather call on WhatsApp. Reason being so that he could get in touch cheaply. The first and only time I asked him to send me something, he told me pointblank he didn't have.
Just this afternoon, I heard a colleague's father just came back to Nigeria from there after 21 solid years! He had abandoned his wife and children here in Nigeria. If he was doing so well over there, would he not have arranged for his family to come over and stay with him - at least?

I have been worried, even before I heard this colleague's father thing: I don't know what I am going to meet at the friend's place; I don't know what life is like over there - how to cope in a non-English speaking environment. I don't know how long it's going to take me to make it over there and reconnect with my family. This news about my colleague's dad also increased my worries.

So, I decided I would come on here to ask: Aren't these red flags as regards traveling over there, especially with the hope that when i get there, after 2-3 years, I would bring in my family.
Anyone here knows about life in Germany?
first is that you already have a negative mindset about everything so even if you travel down to Germany it will be difficult to make it. Secondly your rating of how successful a man is through his means of communication with you shows how low your iq is (no insult), there is Internet everywhere in Germany and it is affordable so many people communicate more through social media (this is 21st century), that does not mean he can't afford 10Euro card to call you even if he is not working at least he receives nothing less than 320Euro monthly from Government as an unemployed person, that money is approximately 170k in naira. Thirdly is that you are only concerned with people like your colleague's Father without considering others in Germany that are doing very well for themselves and their families, so you have chosen side of the fence that you want to belong. Lastly I want to tell you that Germany remains the biggest Economy in the whole of Europe and their contribution to the European Union is second to none.
Before I end I will advice you not to only think of how to hammer immediately in Germany as making it in Germany is not a short term project but what is guaranteed is that u must reach your goal if you follow the laid down rules. Also think about the quality of life when you are making comparison the next time.
Shallom.

Does your friend and colleague father have papers?
If they don't , they will never get a good job , if your reason of traveling abroad is to escape Nigeria without papers , yes you will get there, do odd jobs and you will feed but u won't have as much as u should

I am not supposed to reply but let me advise you that it is not good to hold on to a belief that can limit you. Because belief can limit someone. What you don't believe can never happen to you.

I would have shared the person's LinkedIn page who got a job in Germany right when he was here as a banker. ..but no need. Like I said, work on your belief system. What you think is impossible, someone who knows better and believes will experience it while you who don't believe such will pass the opportunity over.

When you guys are saying someone who can't speak German can't live or work in Germany, does that mean there are no international companies in Germany? Do you know at all what they call expatriates?
Many Nigerian students are studying in Germany with English as the language of tutoring. What does that suggest?

This guy is just so ignorant. Most IT jobs don't require German. But learning the language gives you more opportunities to more other jobs. These days there are so much jobs out there that many employers are asking the government to let in more immigrants to come work.

It took me the best part of 2 years to settle down in the UK and I already had a British passport, a university degree from (UI ) and spoke English. You can't be an overnight success in another country it takes hard work and sacrifice.

Overall, Germany is the best in Europe.

Maybe you should reread my post to grasp the crux of my comment. Since the Op is feeling conflicted about emigrating to Germany on account of the economic status (either real or imagined) of others that are either there presently or once lived there, then maybe he needs to reevaluate his purpose for going abroad, lest he ends up disappointed.

The best that any foreign country can offer an immigrant are better economic opportunities. But even with that, such countries are bound to present their own unique challenges. Therefore, intended immigrants should 'shine their eyes' and manage their expectations so that they don't end up disappointed. Comprende??
I understand your point
Thanks
