South South Is Taking Over The Music Industry by Justmesagi: 9:45pm On Nov 01, 2021 |
Before it was between the East and West until the West took a leap and become the indisputable champion with the calibre of artiste that comes from there. The West offers artistes like Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Tiwa Savage, Tems, etc. She also has most top music video directors like Clearance Peters, Dammy Twitch, Meji Alabi, Dapo Fagbenle (Dap), Ademola Falomo, Mattax, Sesan Ogunro etc But now the South Southerners are at the forefront and may take the "indisputable" tag if the Westerners become over complacent. The likes of Burna Boy, Buju, Oman Lay, Timaya, Rema etc come from the South South. Top music video directors like TG Omori, James Omokwe etc. 1 Like |

There's no basis for competition. Every region should keep doing their best and keep promoting the country in the bright light. 2 Likes 1 Share |

South south guys are coming up truly. Burna is already a giant and Omah Lay & Rema are making waves. But I don’t think the SS can unseat the West anytime soon. The West have always been the music powerhouse coz it’s part of the culture. Shey ba Juju, Fuji, Apala, Afro Pop, anything wey you wan talk. 16 Likes 2 Shares |

Justmesagi:There is no need for "competition", they should all collaborate and work together. The "East" holds its own and have a lot of prospects too. Ckay who is from the "East" is the hottest thing out there currently. His streaming is by far the highest of any Nigerian this year. His streaming for this month is higher than all the Davido, WizKid, Tiwa and Tems hits this year put together. With the pace it is taking, it will be the highest ever streamed Nigerian Music on YouTube and Spotify. Olamide and Phyno are at par and their collaboration was epic. in Gospel, people like Sinach have the highest streaming of any gospel musician in history. One of his track is nearing 200 million on YouTube Techno have music with over 170 million views on YouTube. Old timers like flavour, too many new artistes. They all need each other. They have been able to work together like the legendary Olamide and Phyno combination. Collaborations will take them higher and make them better. Also note that music that is popular in the west might not be in the East. You listen to zlatan in the west, no one knows him in the East. People like Flavour are concentrating on Igbo cultural music these days, which might not be popular nationally but appeals to a particular group. Globally, they are all doing well. 9 Likes |

SpatialKing: I’m talking about international and local reach. I know all tribes got their own kinda style, but if you’re trying to gauge the success with international acceptance and reach of those music, the West hold a clear lead. All those Fuji, Juju, Afro and Indigenous Yoruba beats been making waves internationally even before current era. They even independently won Grammies and nominations also. You’re talking of: Babatunde Olatunji Sikiru Adepoju Lakan Babalola Ebenezer Obey King Sunny Ade Fela Kuti Barrister during those Fuji garbage era. And etc. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

SpatialKing: Bro, music has changed. Nuff respect to those guys you mentioned. Still, the guys who took Nigerian music international, to become world-famous superstars in the process, are Yorubas like Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa, Tems, Yemi Alade etal with Burna Boy being the only non-Yoruba who is a bona-fide international superstar today. It can be cool and liberating if you actually give Yorubas credit you know. Otherwise the facts will do that for Yorubas anyway. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Davido, Wizkid, Tems and Tiwa...... nigerian music is largely Yoruba music. No dispute to this. But I still respect Donjazzy, he's done alot for the industry. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Re: South South Is Taking Over The Music Industry by Ekealterego: 10:24pm On Nov 01, 2021 |
WesternOligarch:Unfortunately, people in Nigeria do not use YouTube or other international streaming services and base their judgement on local radio or regional plays. On YouTube, Tems do not have any track that exceeds 20 million. Davido doesn't have any with more than 30 million in the last 2 years. WizKid highest view is Joro with 150 million released over 2 years ago. Do you know that, this month alone Ckay have gotten over 90 million view based on his track? and a piano acoustic version of his song has almost 90 million streams? A lot of illegal uploads with 40 million, 20 million? In Gospel nko? the East overwhelmingly dominates. The West are doing great no doubt. 2 Likes |

LegendHero: Bruv, this is the undiluted truth. If Americans want to talk about their greatest musicians they would simply go with their biggest global stars likes Michael Jackson , Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Cardi B, Minaj, Chris Brown, Snoop, Migos, future etal. I chose different genre to illustrate the fact that going international is not genre-specific. It is about music that is loved worldwide beyond the nation or continent within which it is made. That is what Yorubas, above all others, excel at. 8 Likes 1 Share |

Ekealterego: Lol.....ckay is just a one hit wonder unfortunately. Streams are good but these guys have won awards and performed on international audiences closing down stadiums and areanas and tems is relatively new but she already has a feature with drake.....from fela to dbanj to wizkid yorubas changed the music industry and are even doing epic stuff in the movie industry with the likes of Kemi Adetiba and kunle afonlayan. 7 Likes 1 Share |
