A 13-year-old student of the Command Secondary School in Suleja, near Abuja, narrowly escaped death after being treated with the wrong medication by a nurse at the school clinic, Saharareporters is reporting. It was learned that the incident occurred on April 30 when the student sought medical treatment for having a high body temperature. After the drugs were administered to the student, he began to develop rashes all over his body. He also noticed that his lips were swollen and his eyes were red. The situation worsened when the nurse abandoned him for three days. It was gathered that school authorities later called the student’s parents to inform them of the development, but by the time they arrived at the school, his condition had worsened to the point that he needed to be rushed to Kubwa General Hospital in Abuja to recuperate from the near-fatal experience. If found guilty let her pay all fees enquired by the patient parents and for put the kiddo through this traumatic experience living him with PSTD she should face the tribunal for query and her nursing license be taken from her tell after 5 years to serve as a deterrent to others. |

Severe allergies maybe? Thorough investigations should be carried out to avoid putting other kids in arms way. So sorry for the affected kid, must have been a living hell for him. 1 Like |

No wonder the dullard and the cocaine addict never visit Nigerian hospitals, health workers are leaving the shithole in large numbers on the decree of Ngige. Soon clinics will be filled with Oluwole trained graduates, the boy is extremely lucky. |

This is not about wrong drugs, what I see here is allergies or drug interactions. He is lucky to be alive. Drugs interaction is a terrible experience. 1 Like |

And who said the medication was wrong ? Sensational headlines! Most likely was allergic to the medication which is not quite uncommon. less likely steven Johnson’s syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. 2 Likes |

DrWhizy:You may be right about the SJS or TEN, but you can't defend the treatment with such enthusiasm until the exact medication, indication and the expertise of the nurse in question is put into perspective. |

gulfer: Excellent. Was looking for this comment. It is Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS) Seen people suffering from it. They must NEVER use sulphonamide drugs. Maybe this patient was given Fansidar. |

Bonesbreaker:Sorry, just saw your comment, someone has answered you already Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare, serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It's usually a reaction to medication that starts with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful rash that spreads and blisters. Then the top layer of affected skin dies, sheds and begins to heal after several days. Antibiotics are the most common cause of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, followed by analgesics, cough and cold medication, NSAIDs, psycho-epileptics, and antigout drugs. Of antibiotics, penicillins and sulfa drugs are prominent culprits; ciprofloxacin has also been reported. |
