Is It Right For The Woman To Contribute To Her Bride Price? by Cuterboy(m): 4:32pm On Nov 02, 2021
–Bride Price in Nigeria can be described as the sum of money or quantity of goods given to a bride’s family

It is required of the groom or of the groom’s family in some tribal societies before marriage. In other words, bride Price is the money or property given to the bride and his family by the groom.

In many parts of Africa, the bride price is what makes the traditional marriage valid because it is a way of asking for permission to marry the bride.

Not everyone finds it easy to pay this money, some families allow you to go ahead with your wedding so you can pay up at a later time in the marriage. While some families allow you to do that, some won’t as it is custom and this sometimes puts a strain on the intending groom. Some tribes in Africa demand a very high bride price from the groom.

Now the question is, should a woman assist the man in looking around for the money, can she contribute to her own bride price? Is it right for her to do so?

Why will make you allow your wife to be to contribute in paying of her Bride Price?
Are you craze or you don't have shame?
You can allow your wife contribute in any other thing concerning the marriage ceremony (if need be) but not payment of her Bride Price.
Tufiakwa. God forbid.

Is it written anywhere that it must be the man only who'll pay all the bills during a marriage?

shouldn't this practice be made a thing of the past at this point in time since this idea comes from the idea of women as property/slaves to their husbands? undecided

No matter how poor or broke you are it doesn't make sense for a lady to give you money to pay her bride price.

yes they do while some could go as low as 200#.. The idea isn't to sell the bride but to observe the traditional rite.

Some women do it,but I feel its not right. Man wen never ready for marriage no suppose put body, because na man wen no get money some women dey disrespect. Inside there, you'll still find some tribe that collect as low as 100# as bride price. They might ask for huge amount, but they will remove #100 and tell you to add to the rest to take care of their daughter. They will then proceed to bless the couple. Unlike some tribe wen go wan use bride price money take care of their full community, and no be say the girl na tear rubber o.. I no mention name ,I just dey catch ma cruise grin..

Unless some reasons;
1. She enjoyed her singlehood so much that she chooses to remain unmarried.

2. The man is the type who believes he should do every type of donation himself.

3. Her parents remain steadfast that the man or his family handle everything involved.

In this modern age many working women cut out of their finances to fund their weddings. Nairalanders will always remain in the Stone Age.

If you and your partner decide to save together or open a joint savings account towards your wedding, and then you take a part of the funds to pay her bride price, what difference does it make?? If her contribution is 20%, yours 80%, and the so called bride price takes about 15% of the total savings, haven't she contributed in some way?

So long as your wife contributes towards the wedding, you have indirectly taken from her to pay her bride price. It doesn't matter whether her Naira notes was used in buying yams and colanut or wedding gown or drinks.

The fact is that she has contributed. Save yourselves the headache. What you used her share of the money to buy is needless.

Unless you (the man) is wealthy enough to fund the wedding 100% (from drinks to wedding gown, earrings, food, etc), your wife and every other person that contributed towards your wedding (including your parents, siblings, friends and those you scammed with aso ebi) have helped you in paying your bride price.

Bride price should be something a man can afford.
Re: Is It Right For The Woman To Contribute To Her Bride Price? by Cuttycool(f): 4:49pm On Nov 03, 2021
Bride price is different from marriage list. In most tribes, bride price is cheap or affordable. If a man cannot afford bride price, it means he is not ready for marriage, let him work harder. I don't even think it is good for a lady to support in buying items on the marriage list as well, she may anyway, if she wishes.
Re: Is It Right For The Woman To Contribute To Her Bride Price? by socialmediaman: 6:38pm On Nov 03, 2021
Bride price might be N5K or much less while marriage list is N100K or more depending on different circumstances like family status, preferences, culture etc

So short answer is No. Bride price is affordable, don’t confuse it with everything else
Re: Is It Right For The Woman To Contribute To Her Bride Price? by Magnoliaa(f): 1:32am On Nov 04, 2021
No.

But I don't understand the people saying it is okay for the woman to contribute to every other bills and payments but not the bride price. undecided Doesn't the fact that she'll contribute monetarily AT ALL nulls the significance of whatever symbolism that is being shown?
