Casio calculator based on the general convention we know- BODMAS. 1 |
Re: Great Mathematicians In The House by femi4: 7:54am On Nov 04, 2021 |
ATMC:Both are correct, configuration differs The one one the left is scientific while the phone cal is non scientific |
Re: Great Mathematicians In The House by asiwaju1981: 12:59pm On Nov 04, 2021 |
femi4: There isn't anything as non scientific in solution to mathematical problem and there can't be two different answers as well. The correct answer is the one displayed by the calculator following BODMAS rules. QED |

asiwaju1981:Olodo, I was referring to the calculators. Scientific calculator not solution The solution is configuration based. One follows bodmas while the other didn't |

WoundedLamb:. You want to know the problem that led to the punching of calculators Like seriously Well, When you talk about topics in Mathematics, It's possible to come across what you just have to solve .... I mean certain topics just involve the manipulation of numbers just for the sake of manipulation...So, the numbers used won't represent anything specific..... Leading to the issue of BODMAS.... When the calculator is not MADE to consider BODMAS...,then it will be useless in cases that require BODMAS in order to determine correctness.... In order to determine what requires BODMAS to determine correctness, The mathematical case has to be specified towards the determination of an aspect of Mathematics instead of ASSUMING there's a real life problem to be solved .... |

aysnoopy:When it did not follow the BODMAS rule for mathe magical operations involving bracket, exponents, division etc? I think the calculators solution was based on fraction. 6/2(2+1). 6/6=1 It didn't follow the rule. |
Re: Great Mathematicians In The House by ATMC(f): 9:18am On Nov 06, 2021 |
WoundedLamb:Thanks for your explicit input, but in a classroom setting, the scholars are usually advised to solve from left to right. This will make Casio less right than android. |
Re: Great Mathematicians In The House by ATMC(f): 9:19am On Nov 06, 2021 |
Nothingserious:Do you mean to say PEMDAS? Because following BODMAS will give you android's answer. |

ATMC: Are u a mathematician? The answer should be based on how the question that arrives to punching of the calculator/phone. But bring this question to any reasonable Engineering student and they will tell u d calculator is d corrected one. Though I'm not saying the phone is wrong, hence, the answer is based on what brings out the Punching of the calculator/phone Thanks 1 Like |

ATMC: Yes, but I believe the left to right concept only applies when there's a conflict of priority. Otherwise, it's conventional to solve the brackets first by opening it and letting every figure be at the same grouping level before eventually moving from left to right. This is because the 2 outside the parenthesis is not a stand-alone number. It is, along with the contents of the parenthesis, an expression that should probably be resolved before joining the rest of the bigger expression. Notice that I said 'probably' and that is because this isn't a necessarily a law. What I'm trying to say in essence is that while both could be correct depending on the problem being resolved, I'd go with Casio if I came across this as a secondary school student. And I don't believe any examiner would set such an ambiguous question. 1 Like |

People are just talking trash without answering the question, which of them is correct for goodness sake and which of them is wrong. This is fucking confusing, This is no longer about mathematics, this is about programming, because both the calculator and the phones are machines with circuitries on which programs are running on. the calculator is running assembly language while the phone' app which was made with probably java and which get translated into bytecode is essentially still almost running assembly, why aren't they following the same principle, why is the assembly program running on one machine behaving differntly from another assembly program running on another machine, is operator predescence not meant to be similar across machines running assembly language nah, wetin dey happen. |

The Android phone is correct! When dealing with BODMAS, PEMDAS or BEDMAS, we follow the rules of precedence i.e from left to right for division and multiplication because they have equal precedence. Let's consider BODMAS. From 6÷2(2+1) B = Bracket (2+1)=3 O = order (there's no order of operation) so 6÷2(2+1) implies =6÷2(3) implies =6÷2*3 =3*3(from left to right) = 9// .................................................................... Second method. 6÷2(2+1), and it can be written as 6 = ------. (2+1) 2 6 = ---. (3) 2 = 18/2=9 or 3(3) = 9// proved. Therefore, the Android phone is correct. 1 Like |
