On Sunday, April 22, 1990, about five years into Babangida’s bloody rule, a junior soldier, Major Gideon Orkar, announced the most audacious coup in the annals of the country which attempted to oust the fiercely-corrupt Babangida from power. The Orkar coup demystified Babangida, who fled, tail between legs, to Abuja, where he relocated the seat of power to from Lagos after escaping being killed, through the courage of his security aides. Colonel UK Bello his ADC confronted the coup plotters but was killed inside an armoured tank. Subsequently, the coup was foiled and the plotters were arrested. Orkar, a Tiv from Benue State, and 41 other soldiers were shot to death on July 27, 1990. Maj Saliba Mukoro was alleged to be the ring leader and brain behind the coup. He conscripted Orkar at the later stages. Maj Saliba Mukoro was the first PhD holder in the military. An intelligent officer of the Military police,US trained and from Delta state. sammybest889: Infact, now that am older, I kind of understand why they did what they did. It was a matter of the Northern domination on the oil rich and literate south. They failed. That's why Nigeria is still that way till now 8 Likes |

The Gideon Orkar coup was majorly orchestrated by officers of Middle- Belt. The major reason why it failed was the coup planners sought to divide Nigeria by cutting off Northern Nigeria from the rest of the Country. Why some top ranking officers in the Military were adversed to the corrupt style of the Babangida Administration and would have supported the Orkar coup, but when the clear intent of the coup began to emerge, they backed out especially the christian officers from Plateau and Kaduna who were not liking the idea of being cut off to remain attached to the North. Till date, the unity of Nigeria is a political game amongst the military officer in North especially the Christian officers from Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa and Kaduna states. It is not that the Military officer from Northern Nigeria are so muchinterested in the unity of Nigeria, but for them Nigeria must remain United so they would not be left at the mercy of Northern Muslims. 3 Likes |

I still remember that day especially the shelling around the state house as the coup progressed. The major reasons why the coup failed was because of the failure of the coupists to secure heavy calibre weapons and the pre-mature cutting off of Northern Nigeria from the rest of the country.I remember a soldier was killed @ the armoury that day.RIP sergeant. 3 Likes 1 Share |

BlackfireX: Lol.. That is what made his coup fail.. But I kinda understand what he was trying to do. The seat of power was in Lagos. Orkar and Co were not concerned with what happens up north. Thier mission was to grap power in the Lagos centre and then give conditions to the north if they still want to be part of Nigeria. If it came to a fight, they will have the upper hand. The North will have no choice other than accepting thier conditions. The North is land locked, No oil etc and depend on the south to live well 1 Like |

It is thesame issues Major Gideon Orkar highlighted then are still what we're struggling with as a country currently. These were brave people ready to die for a cause rather than all this spineless youths and semi old cargoes that prefer to live for nothing, and all they can do best is phuck and breed children with no future in view. Things fall apart.....There was a country 1 Like |

Nigeriadondie: Prolific007:"Our history is replete with numerous and uncontrollable instances of callous and insensitive dominating repressive intrigues by those who think it is their birthright to dominate till eternity the political and economic privileges of this great country to the exclusion of the people of the Middle Belt & the south" It is our unflinching belief that this quest for domination, oppression and marginalization is against the wish of God and therefore, must be resisted with vehemence. Racoon: He summarized the whole of Nigeria's problem and truly the core north is our major problem, one of the reasons we can't progress as a nation. All I can do now is wish it had pull through back then atleast for the fact that the shackles of slavery would have been broken off our neck. The core north is ruling this nation like how a grand master rules in a secret cult with so much clandestine activities. |
