Thanks for this. Pls do you have any idea the cost of prosthetic leg fitting here in Nigeria?
there is a place in ajao estate that specialises in things as such, I will try to pass there when I go out 2moro. From 7 & 8 bus stop. Just take a maruwa going to canoe, its opposite a fast food by FIRS office.

My dear sincere sympathy. Prosthesis is inexpensive. I guess your mother has a poorly controlled diabetes. Beyond your mum, all your sibs should periodically screen for DM. Definitely amputation is what she needs now. That foot must been gangrenous.

[quote author=Spark2 post=107361314]Hello NL.
I'm going to keep this brief.

It started three weeks ago. my mum, who was walking normal with no problem suddenly could not walk. Her left leg began paining her severely that day. My mum was all in tears... She was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that her sugar level was on the high side. The hospital gave drugs which stabilised it, at that point my mum was very weak, couldn't eat, each time she eat she throws up and also had some pain in the leg still. After a week in the hospital, we were then referred to a teaching hospital after a test showed that creatinine in her kidney was high.

The teaching hospital tried their best and I can say my mum is now okay. Except for the left leg. She can't still walk on it, the leg feels cold to touch with a little discolouration above the foot.

Doppler test showed that blood isn't really flowing through the leg. And they said they will need to amputate the leg to prevent the infection from growing to the other parts of the body.

Please I want to know if you know anyone who had similar condition and amputation was recommended but was later healed without need for amputation.

Please share your recommendations. I need my mum now more than before in my life. We are confused on whether to allow them to go on with the amputation or seek other alternatives.

Thank you very much.

Is she in Enugu, let me pray for her and the blood will begin to flow immediately.. Distance is not a barrier though,in the name of Jesus healing will visit your mum

There’s what we call second opinion in situations like this. I think your family should seek the opinion of another specialist to see if he or she agree with this doctor. This has worked well for me and my family.
Also, the amputation may be the solution that may lengthen your mum’s life, so do no be so afraid. Diabetes can still be managed effectively by adjusting to lifestyles.
May God heal your mum. Amen.

Damn bro! My mum experienced such last year. The leg must be amputated to avoid gangrene. Trust me bro, you'll rather they amputate that leg than watch her cry every minute due to the pains from gangrene.
Prosthetics are affordable depending on what you have. And there are NGOs that give out free prosthetics. May God be with your mum.

Like everything is not working. Whites won't think of amputation at all they'll look for other means of survival
But here reverse is the case . op pls they should not amputate her leg .the elder sister of my mum suffered same thing after money was spent she's walking perfectly now.

Pls if that's the last resort on the doctors' recomendation, let it be done asap to reduce the spread of the infection and save her life asap.

My uncle's leg was amputated for this same reason about 6 years ago, he has been living very okay!

Delay is dangerous.

Wanted to board a bus today. There were two ladies at d back seat. So I decided to join them and was sandwiched by them. I took particular note of d lady to my left...Pretty, robust & fresh. Better ajebutter looking juicy. If she too old maybe 23. But I noticed something as she struggled to find a comfortable place for her right leg because d spare tire was taking some space for legs. It was then I noticed that she is an amputee with a prosthetic leg from her knee down. I think hers was most likely recent as I could see bandage. As the journey commenced, all I was asking myself was what experience did she have that led to this? I wanted to do oversabi by asking her but I cautioned myself cos that's not d kind of question strangers should ask. I really felt for her but that's her life right now

Pls, get a second opinion asap

Don't delay the amputation before the infection affects other parts of her body.

She will live long with proper management

My friend, if you have money send your mom abroad immediately. Don't send her to India o. Because 90% of doctors in Nigeria are quacks. When they can't diagnose malaria, typhoid, diabetes and pneumonia they go for the kill. Never trust a Nigeria doctor. Send your mom to Europe or America, even south africa. Na beg I dey beg you o. Get a proper second opinion.

If gangrene bacteria (C. perfringens) has gotten into that wound then amputation is the ONLY solution. The tissues around the infected region would have died already and the necrosis will spread to other regions of the leg and rest of the body if it isn't removed. Op didn't show photos of the leg but for doctors to recommend amputation, that's the only viable solution. He should still seek for a second opinion though

She will need insulin o. To be taken regularly. This is type 2 diabetes. Go to a reliable doctor. If her sugar level is well controlled, she won't need to go through that.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and am broke right now and unable to buy this expensive insulin. I've only eaten 4 times this week.

I also have malaria now that I can't treat well because no money. This life is not easy
