My dad was diabetic before he passed on.

In 2018, he developed an ulcer in between his right toes. It refused to heal. We took him to LUTH where they advised we do an amputation below the knee. My dad wasn't enthusiastic and could be very stubborn. We too weren't keen ourselves but my stepmom saw nothing wrong in it if there was no option.

After a test was carried out, it was discovered blood flow into both legs were bad and that was what prevented the healing. Though the left leg's blood flow wasn't as good as that of the right leg, it wasn''t in any immediate danger as the leg ulcer was on the right leg. An operation was suggested where they could bypass damaged arteries and veins in the right leg so that blood could flow to the toes. We did not go through with it. The operation did not have a 100% chance of success. It was like 50/50..

We were informed that there was a hospital at Yaba where a novel treatment for diabetes was going on that could heal the feet and prevent amputation. We were there for 2 months or so. It was a complete waste of time and the right big toe was in very bad condition due to gangrene. You could start seeing the bone by the time we left there. An amputation was also suggested there close to the end of my dad's stay there. They believed a partial amputation of the foot would be enough.

After we left that hospital, we went straight home. All we could do at that point was dressing the wound. We used to go to the hospital at Yaba to get it dressed but after a while we realized it was futile. An amputation was the only remedy. I remember asking my dad if he would approve an amputation and I remember him saying "Never!" grin grin. My dad is one tough cookie. He also suffered from dementia at this point

After a while, we stopped going to the Yaba hospital due to the futility of it all. There was no point dressing the leg everyday or every other day. The gangrene was just going from bad to worse. If we had done the amputation early, it might just have been maybe half the foot. Now, the minimum would be below the knee.

We kept putting pressure on my dad to agree to an amputation but was unyielding. My stepmom was losing her mind. It was when my older sister, my dad's firstborn called from overseas and pleaded with him before he changed his mind. Within 30 days of changing his mind, my sister flew into the country and an amputation below the knee was successfully carried out in Lekki. This was in August 2018. The saga started in February 2018.

We should have acted on time. The lesson is that a foot in time saves a leg. A leg in time saves a life. I'm pained writing this but may just be the blunt truth.

On your part, make sure you take care of your health. Don't end up like your mum. It is a lesson that has dawned on me now. There's still time.

There is only two products i will recomend for you to buy with just about 45 to 50k. And your mum must be well forever. U dont need to amputate the leg. So far as she can use the products for the least two weeks. Testimonies are urs. If find this helpful call me; 07037198179; Ken.

based on what you wrote here, the results of the doppler are very troubling really, what it means is that blood is not flowing to the leg ,and the sudden inability to walk means that the leg is dead,as lack of blood supply for an extended period can cause that, the main problem is that when a particular organ dies,it begins "in lay man terms" to decay and release poisons that are dangerous to other parts of the body, most notably the heart .so if you are going for a second opinion, its most likely to confirm the findings, but if these findings are correct, the leg may need to be amputated. lastly i will really advice you to ignore people who are saying things about knowing about someone else that walked later or got better without amputation, the best way i can illustrate this is with people travelling past a particular road, the truth is that the people that pass will actually come and tell you of their story how the road is safe, but the people that die on the path ,cannot come and tell you that path is very dangerous, leaving a dead limb is really dangerous

Hello NL.
I'm going to keep this brief.

It started three weeks ago. my mum, who was walking normal with no problem suddenly could not walk. Her left leg began paining her severely that day. My mum was all in tears... She was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that her sugar level was on the high side. The hospital gave drugs which stabilised it, at that point my mum was very weak, couldn't eat, each time she eat she throws up and also had some pain in the leg still. After a week in the hospital, we were then referred to a teaching hospital after a test showed that creatinine in her kidney was high.

The teaching hospital tried their best and I can say my mum is now okay. Except for the left leg. She can't still walk on it, the leg feels cold to touch with a little discolouration above the foot.

Doppler test showed that blood isn't really flowing through the leg. And they said they will need to amputate the leg to prevent the infection from growing to the other parts of the body.

Please I want to know if you know anyone who had similar condition and amputation was recommended but was later healed without need for amputation.

Please share your recommendations. I need my mum now more than before in my life. We are confused on whether to allow them to go on with the amputation or seek other alternatives.

Thank you very much.

Pls note that as at now, her sugar level, creatinine and other things are normal.

May the Lord Jesus Christ heal her. Amen.

Regarding medications, would advise she takes Pregabalin (if there is a nerve pain), she also needs lots of Vitamins. Neurofit forte will help out, and high doses of Vitamin C, if there a drips she can take, the doctors should start asap!

Good luck!

Go to at least 2 more doctors for other opinions. Go to a teaching hospital too and don’t tell them what your previous Dr. said. If it’s the same outcome then follow their decision but do the operation in a teaching hospital

Refuse the amputation and have her see a Neurologist asap. Walking difficulties and/or continuous problems with the legs are often a sign of brain diseases/disorders. The brain controls our walking (including both movement and balance). Have her see a well-trained Neurologist.
i guess you didnt see the doppler result he wrote baaaa, since we are all suggesting who he should go and see,he has to see a well trained plastic surgeron,a endocrinologist, and a psychiatrist.neurologist has no business here

Gangrene, amputation is the only solution.
not really, she could do a bypass. She probably has Peripheral Arterial disease(PAD). Which means there is a blockage or damage in the artery in the leg. It could be bypassed using the vein.

Follow your Drs advice...

This kind of matter shouldn't be debated.
Just pray, the process goes successful...

Let her be followed up with Physiotherapy management and care afterward... For possible mobilization and ambulation with crutches depending on her age and other underlying conditions...

The amputation is probably for the best okay...

Am speaking from medical profession angle not just a commenter...

All the best.. And God's Grace.

Differentiate:

Like everything is not working. Whites won't think of amputation at all they'll look for other means of survival
But here reverse is the case . op pls they should not amputate her leg .the elder sister of my mum suffered same thing after money was spent she's walking perfectly now.
Spark2 pls you said lastly that everything about her is now normal . don't allow whack doctors to amputate your mom.
which whites are you talking about ,USA or UK,because i know they will definitely amputate that leg, don't come here and be saying what you don't know.thinking whites are magicians.but humour me for a moment, what other means of survival is there.
this just reminds me of a patient who had bone cancer and was suggested to amputate the arm,he refused and went to india, where they did a minimal surgery, just removed a part and left his hand,no amputation.he came back and was boosting to us,see what we couldnt do.for him to come a year later with late stage cancer asking for amputation, the cancer had spread everywhere, unfortunately nothing could be done for him

Unfortunately, cases like these are very popular in the teaching hospital. Many patients refuse amputation until it either gets worse or kills them. A stitch in time saves nine.
Prosthetics are quite expensive now, least is from 500k upwards. I'll advise you do the amputation as fast as possible. Wish your mum all the best!

If you feel you dont agree with the doctor's decision, please seek another doctor in another hospital medical advice......if two or more different doctors agrees on the same plan....I STRONGLY ADVICE YOU SIGN THE CONSENT PAPER FOR THE AMPUTATION. Also make sure you are going to teaching hospitals..... candid advice from a medical doctor....

Don't let anybody amputate your mum's leg, some doctors can be confused with their diagnosis, nothing is tranfering to another, that was how one doctor said if my aunt's child didn't take a particular drug everyday,he will have seizure.
We throw that drug away till today the child never had it.
Instead look for a good physiotherapist to work with your mum's legs.

Amputation is the onlh remedy to save her life, unless it will extend to her organ and it wit affect her sight, she is loosing blood daily because of no blood flow,
Exactly the same case with my uncle who poorly managed diabetes, its Amputation he did now he doing fine using prosthetic leg , people hardly knw he was amputated tell he tell them
Please encourage mom to go for Amputation to save her life she will be fine.....

Thanks a lot

Please get decision of about 4 other experts including a very good alternative medicine consultant. This decision is not a one off.

Had a similar experience not with sugar though, was told at a renowned teaching hospital to have immediate surgery else I'd be confined to the wheelchair in less than 2 years. I sought other alternatives as I didn't have the money for surgery. Was able to combine alternative medicine with physio and prayers. This is my 7th year since the diagnosis, no surgery done still. Though I limp a little, I still have my legs and I don't look like someone who would need a wheelchair anytime soon. ,

However, If all reports are congruent, then you just have to eat the frog to save her life.

Would be ideal to arrange for her to see a doctor outside Nigeria. Take photos of her leg and of the hospital results and go to gofundme and appeal for funds for treatment. Before appealing for funds, do your research on how much it would cost in different countries for medical, transportation, visa etc fees and put the exact amount on GoFundMe.
