in my case it triggered it. I didn't erase the code intentionally to see the outcome, cos my car ran great. Do you know lean mixture can mimic P0420 triggers.

When my car just landed, dirty throttle body threw the P0420 code. Some other peeps would have panicked and started throwing parts around

If the code is p0420 DM for the solution. No need getting another catalyst. I had same experience when I got my Corolla. The defouler with its follow come catalyst converter did the magic. I still have one for sale.
