Marketing Or Engineering, Which Should I Choose? by Grand194: 8:28pm On Nov 16, 2021
I work as a senior brand designer in one of the multinationals in the country. My being there sparked my interest in building a career in marketing.

I am from an Electrical Electronics Engineering background. While in school i loved both engineering and graphics design. I have also wanted the opportunity of working for brands to change or improve consumer perception of a product from ideation to final production.

Here's the thing, I want to start a career in marketing if I'm to remain in Nigeria next year, I'd have to take the necessary certifications needed and jobs that will get me to the peak of the career. On the other hand, I want to continue my career in Engineering. This would mean I travel out of the country for masters and stay there for the next 10 years building that dream.

Reason is the discipline of Engineering I chose, getting jobs is not easy in Nigeria, especially when you want to grow in the core of electrical /electronics engineering and make good money. Please not companies like Ikedc.

Now I'm confused on which to go for. I completed my youth service last year. I'm just starting life fully and don't want to waste time and opportunities.

What path would you advise me to take and why?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

With your Engineering certificate you can also be a good marketer provided you can do make a good presentation.
Why not work first in any engineering company for better practical experience before going for masters in engineering. Why is black man too keen about masters certificate? Masters certificate is good but highly overrated and doesn't make the holder better than field engineers with less than first degree. HND holder in China/ Japan is far far better than a Nigerian with
PhD in engineering. We only use our multiple degrees to speak grammar and deceit. Producing zero

Marketing

Most people that studied engineering in Nigeria are now working in different fields not related to their course of study. It’s hard to get a job with that course grin.. As far as you’re in Nigeria , I’ll suggest you go for marketing— you can always land a part time job for marketing or you create one yourself . DYOR..

Just do ur engineering, technology is already taking over... marketing will be breeze. Plus if u are in Nigeria, marketing job go tire u sef, cause 80% of the jobs available is marketing.

One of the few characteristics of marketers is they are extremely dubious, speak half truths & compel/confused/convince people into buying what they don't actually need. But don't believe me, just watch around

Eweeeyyyy!

The engineering path is very lucrative but you might only be opportuned to get a good job in that field in abroad.. Provided you have the means, you should go for that one

As for graphics, you have be really exceptional to stand out in the competition for graphic design jobs. The competition is maddening, in every corner, there's a graphics guy

Go and Learn Civil Engineering.

My Bro graduated as a Chemical Engineer after the search for job he settled as a Secondary school teacher grin

After two years he got tired and resigned. He started following Civil Engineers to site and also got admission form a PGD in Civil.

Now he is a full blown money making Engineer residing on the Lagos Island grin

Go into what’s profitable in Nigeria. Our country doesn’t Favour all courses grin
