Amuneke urges NFF to screen Eagles’ team list before each game Makes case for proper scrutiny of youth teams Former Super Eagles attacker, Emmanuel Amuneke, believes the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should properly screen and get Super Eagles Manager, Gernot Rohr, to defend his choice before the final list of players for every game is officially made public. Amuneke, who has just been made a member of the FIFA Study Group, said on a radio programme yesterday that inviting clubless Ahmed Musa, who has not been active in football for five months, was wrong. He urged the NFF to set a template for coaches to follow while picking players for matches, adding that the absence of such rules would give room for all manner of people to find their way into the national teams. “I don’t have anything against Ahmed Musa… in fact, I was among those who recommended him for the national team following his displays for his club against my team Ocean Boys in the Nigerian league. “He is a good player, but sentiments aside, Ahmed Musa does not have any business with the national team because he has been absence from football for five months. “If he is coming to motivate the players, fine; but coming as part of the team is not fair on other players who deserve to be in the Eagles list. “In Spain, where I played and even in Germany, where Rohr hails from, he cannot invite a player that is not active in football for five months. “Rohr is a foreign coach, but it is quite unfortunate he is working in a country that does not really pay attention to some key issues. As a coach in Tanzania, I call a press conference and defend each player I want to invite before bringing it out the list officially to the public. It is good for a coach to defend his team list for transparency sake,” Amuneke said. He advised the NFF and football stakeholders to start working on developing and impacting new strategies to young players in academies and grassroots teams to meet the high level of competition on the global stage. “In the past, when Nigerian teams meet Asians it was easy for us to beat them in football. But these days, it is not like that. “The Asians have gone back to develop themselves more in the game. Nigeria has to follow this same trend by constantly developing players on the rudiments and latest style of the game. Football is changing everyday.” Amuneke canvassed for the U-17 national team to become a melting pot for all young footballers from all part of the country with the best selected to represent the country without sentiments. He also called on football stakeholders to educate players and coaches on the consequences of MRI test conducted on U-17 teams. “It is embarrassing that most times Nigerian players in U-17 championships are screened out by MRI tests. This is not good for the country’s image… it portrays Nigeria as a country that cheats in football. “We are supposed to have overgrown this at this level. Proper education and orientation need to be done to ensure the right set of players are presented for MRI screening during age grade competitions to avoid such embarrassments.” https://guardian.ng/sport/amuneke-urges-nff-to-screen-eagles-team-list-before-each-game/ I will like to do a brief breakdown of important points raised by Emmanuel Amunike in this case, which I feel can serve as a template going forward. However, I believe most in the corridors of the NFF are just in to make money out of the system and do not care about the negative impact their mismanagement of Nigerian football. 9 Likes |

He urged the NFF to set a template for coaches to follow while picking players for matches, adding that the absence of such rules would give room for all manner of people to find their way into the national teams...Emmanuel Amunike I found this very impressive because it cuts across many discussion points. Most importantly, selection should be strictly based on quality. How do you know if a player suits a system and can bring the much needed quality? Attributes. It is strictly about attributes. There are certain standards and criteria players should meet before being selected for a role or callup. So the NFF needs a system that will make it laser tight to select players. Selection of players should stop being vague but with critical understanding and ticking particular boxes. 3 Likes |

As a coach in Tanzania, I call a press conference and defend each player I want to invite before bringing it out the list officially to the public. It is good for a coach to defend his team list for transparency sake...Emmanuel Amunike This is another I find interesting. Selection of players should meet criteria as earlier discussed. This is where having a sound system on ground comes to play and developing the team towards fitting into the system. When a coach goes out screening and finally comes up with the list, it is proper he proves he made his selection on merit. Making a breakdown why players made the list and why some where dropped will prove transparency. Another important factor it will do is spurring players who missed the cut to work towards improving. This will with time boost competition too. It also puts the coach out there for open criticism than making his selection shrouded in secrecy. The media can also interact with the coach on a level to put out the pains of the general public. This keeps the coach in connection with the fans, media, and football stakeholders. Although this can lead to massive criticism but at least the coach shows he made his choices for genuine reasons. 3 Likes |

jihday: I know these NFF men will do their utmost best to continue their fraud. Let us be clear. We are never going to employ a top grade for the Super Eagles. The best way to get a high-quality coach for the team is locally. If not we will get stuck with highering foreign mediocres. 1 Like |

He (Emmanuel Amunike) advised the NFF and football stakeholders to start working on developing and impacting new strategies to young players in academies and grassroots teams to meet the high level of competition on the global stage. I agree with this. The grassroots and academies should become the bedrock of the national team. We need to take it seriously to improve the tactical coaching at that level and instill high tactical principles in our young players. This makes them easily qualified to break into quality clubs and increase their chances of development for clubs and the National team. 4 Likes |
