Kaduna based Islamic Scholar, Shaikh Ahmad Gumi, has built a school for herdsmen at Kagarko Grazing Reserve near Kohoto Village forest in Kaduna state.

The scholar, who named the school as Sheikh Uthman Bin Fodio Centre, said it was funded by Sultan Mosque Foundation Limited.

According to him, the centre designed to educate herdsmen, will be replicated everywhere in the country including the south.

He said instead of spending billions on military hardware to fight the bandits, Nigeria should spend such on schools and teachers to educate the herdsmen.

“If they are educated, they will not be doing what they are doing. So, we say we must take education to them and we embarked on the project to also be an example for others, local government, state and federal and rich individuals even cooperative societies to come together and make sure that we are directed across the forest to know what we can do to carter for them; it does not cost much, very little and it will help to educate them and we will live peacefully with them.

“What we have here is a centre containing six classrooms that can be used for primary, secondary schools and at various times you can teach all categories at all times and the place will be engaged for 24 hours because the herdsmen usually take their cattle out by 10am and bring them back by dawn or sunset so they have 2 hours before they take their cattle away and we have 2 to 3 hours because we like to put some solar light so that they can read 8, 9, 10 in the night so that the herder can go and come back.

“We have schools, we have hospital and also showing them how to grind the foliage which they can use to feed their animals, some of them don’t need to go out because those things are so cheap and farmers are throwing those things away, soon farmers will start charging for it. If we can duplicate this everywhere, Nigerians will live in peace.

“Not everyone of the herdsmen are into banditry So, it is not good to label them as terrorists because it will profile all herdsmen as terrorists because you are attaching it to herdsmen, you are not attaching it to an organization and if you say herdsmen are terrorists, Nigeria will have problem, the whole course will be on fire, the north south and east will be on fire and nothing will remain of Nigeria ” he said.

Gumi led his delegation to the Palace of the Sarki of Kagarko, 98-year-old Malam Sa’ad Abubakar, where they also received royal blessings.

I share your sentiments. But I also understand the government, you must understand that the kind of acceptance ipob has in the East, boko haram or bandit don’t have it in the north.
Also let me say this even if it doesn’t make sense.
It will be hard to say herdsmen are terrorist and I will tell you why. Herding is a profession that has become a way of life for certain people, remember we have been living with this herding system for so many years? some of these herdsmen have become bandits but not all of them (as a matter of fact, fact has come out that most herdsmen terrorizing Nigeria are not Nigerians, and that’s where I have a problem with the government) So if they declare “HERDSMEN” terrorist it means many innocent people will die that’s like marking a whole tribe or a whole profession.
IPOB on the other hand is a secession group that alone will make them treasonous. I don’t know if any of these make sense. I am not a fan of Buhari and I don’t have problem with the north. I have igbo friends and I don’t and will never insult them.
You see the way Yoruba backed out from secession? That’s because our leaders were quick to come in, to make our people understand that secession is not what we need. We heard from OBJ whom is neither APC nor PDP, even Afenifere has come out to say they are not secession group because they understand the implications. If the Igbo leaders can talk to the youth and make them understand that their fight can only be fought through diplomacy it will do a lot of good than bad. Though I know everything in Nigeria is political including secession and other things playing out in the country from inception.
