'Hidden beams' in this context are small beams usually having the same depth as the solid slab. The term hidden is used because the beam is concealed in the reinforced concrete solid slab.

The beam you described is the downstand beam placed on the sandcrete blocks. This is usually 450mm deep or more unlike the hidden 150mm beam.
Its deeper than the slab hence not hidden .

diordaves:

I'm sorry, I still don't understand.

First off; I don't know why it is called "hidden". It is not hidden. It is a beam. As I understand as experienced with my builds, you beam with the beams supported by the blocks and columns and then you pour your slab (decking) with your slab supported on the beams. Are you saying this is a wrong practice? Please educate more. Are we to pour the slab directly on top of the block work? Or do you mean something else?

After over a year consistently on this thread, i will be patronising a vendor from this thread... I have always been avoiding that due to the numerous, not too palatable issues in the past but i will buy wood and other accessories worth a million naira from hslbroker2....
He has promise to do POD... I have promise to pay him IMMEDIATELY.... My carpenter and Engr will received the truck, count the wood, ensure it's okay and they will signal me to pay... Hslbroker2 has ASSURED me that what he's bringing will be of utmost quality, not MIX, exact specification and i will be happy with it... I will come here to give feedback... If this goes through, then i will consider this thread for my window/door/plumbing etc... It's my little way of saying, Thank you to the thread and the MEN here, i always receive valuable info.
No problem sir
There won't be issue
God will take control
Thanks sir

Two main areas that need further attention : I am guessing that your guests will, occasionally, need to clean up, but you don't seem to have provision for a bathroom.

The second point is in the width of your main entrance gate. You will need to widen it substantially for it to be able to accommodate a car in front of the property.

this is the closest. This is the closest to what I can get which I know I can replicate. Costs 45,000/meter

The first sample is slightly close, but not with the gold stuff at all. Do you have a close-up picture of this?

Well spotted, the environment looked sufficiently Nigerian to me that I neglected to zoom in any further.

Thanks

Of course flat ( just like ribbed, waffle or solid ) slabs are structurally designed element. They however do not have any beam at all stiffening the panels.
They are designed to be supported by the columns and their column heads are enlarged and designed in such a way that there is no shearing between them because of the absence of beams.

Pop board ? 1.2 x 3 m , 12mm thickness ?

I am ready to pickup a 1000 with profiles if price is good . Keep me posted abeg

I got mine yesterday. I’d ask the supplier for a better deal for you. He’s a direct importer.

100 boards is just 10% of 1,000.

That’s something that you’ll have to decide. You’ll have to compare the cost of laterite to fill the hole as well as proper compaction.

Good luck on your project.

I was on a site yesterday to resolve a structural issue and the iron bender suggested putting a hidden beam on the slab. This I have noticed on alot of sites even some owners do it.

I told him no and he said he knew I won't accept he goes along with it.

The issues of hidden beam on a slab is a bad practice and is fast becoming a norm. It makes no sense and has no technical or structural backing.

Aforxzy:
The effectiveness of a beam is the function of its span and depth. This means that the longer the span, the deeper the depth.

A beam whether rectangular or flange needs adequate depth against deflection. When you put a hidden beam in a slab of say 150mm thick, the beam does not have enough depth and will deflect. Also the reinforcements required for such beam if design will be much as againt those provided by the iron bender.
So invariably the hidden beam does not prevent deflection of the slab.

The right thing is to reduce the spacing of the reinforcement or increase depth of the slab.

nice, could it be that it saves cost, that's why people are doing it, but so far so Good, deflection rarely happens where hidden beam was used,

Disadvantage will probably be the extra cost of rebars.

What she's saying is that.. Do not think your secret beams are doing the work that beams (with depth) are designed to do.

They don't prevent slab deflection.

And its better to reduce the rebar spacing for a slab than introduce "secret beams"

Good afternoon house. I finally joined nairaland because of this thread. I have been here as a guest for a while and I have learnt so much. Thank you all for the useful contributions and insights. God bless you.

I’m thinking of starting my project by January and see what I can achieve by the end of next year. I have some questions though:

Can 5 million raise a 4 bedroom bungalow from foundation to roofing? Please bear in mind that the land was previously a fish pond but that has been discontinued for over 5 years but the pond area is still open and wasn’t filled.

Also gurus in the house recommend a good hand for house plan. Its a 30x120 half plot, I want a sexy (lol) 4 bedroom plan.

NB: if you’re a drawer, please don’t contact me. I’ll only reach persons referred to me by the people I consider as well versed on the thread. Thank you.

Welcome, sadly 5 million won't be enough, you need up to 9 million or more for the carcass, but that depends on the house design and requirements , i can help you design a modern bungalow, contact is in my signature and link to my thread, never forget prices are flexible and negotiable.

Nice concept by the way, you're good to go.
Can we see your site plan.lets see if there's provision for services.
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Aforxzy(f): 8:23am On Nov 25, 2021
Beams should not be concealed in a flat slab. Flat slabs are beamless. It's wrong if done. Ribbed slab yes in the ribs with considerable depth e.g the hollow pot type.

I'm a structural engineer.
