God1000: And yet you did not mention him when you gave names of some prominent igede sons and daughters..... I was actually reading the post thinking you might deny he's an igede, well... The idoma people must be very friendly and brotherly to have considered igede as idoma while igede is the opposite.... The idoma people don't kill igede as the tiv do - idoma people, I love you guys! 5 Likes 2 Shares |

EDhims: Wow, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay at Ainu Ucho. And for appreciating the hospitality of your said said Ex Gf. Ainu Ucho is my maternal home. In Igede land, Ainu people are known to make the best wives . My Mum comes from the Okwuche's family. The same family that produced the reknowned Nigeria ambassador to France, a very popular bishop known as Bishop Okwuche and also a former Radio benue and CNN presenter known as Peter Okwuoche. Tho i lived majority of my life outside the state but i must confess Igede people are generally hard working, smart and homely. No tribe is 100% perfect. Just like every tribe we are made up of both good and some few not good people too. Do you have and Igede friend at the moment? 6 Likes |

God1000: This is so true. There are lots of Igede people in a rural settlement that's called Osunjela in Osun state. The settlement is located between Osogbo, the state capital and Ilesha, another major city in the state. There, you'll find Igede people in large numbers. I love them because they are very hardworking and peace loving just like their Yoruba hosts. 4 Likes |

EJEHSON: The man said what he said so let him be or will you force him to accept your own ideology?. The idomas always feel they're wiser and smarter even when it's obvious they're fo.olish since they always want down Benue by all means just for the fact that they're not given chance to rule as governor. If they're claiming that the Tivs have born to rule mentality what is their own situation with the igede's regarding senatorial seat and a slot for Ministerial appointment where idomas always sideline them igede's. The igede's like the Tivs because they're even more hospitable than the idoma's even though they do land dispute sometimes. Idoma's are too ethnocentric in nature 3 Likes 1 Share |

Igede are good people. They have helped me in life. They are simple easy going people. Politically, they are lost. I expected minority like them should give a block vote but they don't. In the last election, apc and pdp had 50% each from Igede. With that, how will they be relevant in the politics of the state? Obi and Oju lga are not even united politically. It was so painful early this year that 2 communities in oju lga fought over oyinke. They disrespected their first class chief. Igede are more of South South than North Central. They are very different in almost everything from TIV but fairly similar traits with idoma. Igede is my second home. 1 Like 1 Share |

I always thought Benue only had Tivs & Idomas as tribes, not until 2013 when I met this guy when I used to work in Katsina. We got talking and he said he was Igede from Benue, prior to then I have never heard that tribe. But I have gone on to meet other igede's since then. From my interactions with them, so far I can say they are lively and friendly people. They are also hard working as I worked with that 1st guy. They like to groove and have fun too. Correct guys so far. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

PrinceOfLagos: I don't have a dog in this fight, but please bear with me. I believe the Fulanis currently with Buhari are clearly overplaying their hands just the same way the Igbos in the 60s did overplay their hands in the coup. The common thread in both instances is the apt desire for those in power to shield or protect "their own". I understand this is human nature....and a type of an eager desire for self-preservation especially when one keenly observes real or imagined competing interests in a cut throat environment. A rather fortuitous offshoot of the sad events in the 60s is that for a brief moment in Nigeria's time, there was a massive structural re-arrangement of the country designed to give minorities their voices. Northern Nigeria at that time would have been far far worst than the former Sudan in the way the northern Muslim half wanted to deliberately decimate the southern Christian half (there were massive riots in Tivland in the 60s which was forcefully quelled down by the Northern government at that time. This was a clear protest against the unfair and lop-sided political structures of that era). The Arewa oligarchy at that time would have gone ahead to simply wipe off all the Christian minorities in the artificial domain the British accidentally gifted them if they could...and they would have. (I read the colonial memo of how some Christian minority groups were being pressured to be resettled elsewhere from their indigenous lands and/or being threatened to be wiped off if they do not conform to certain political slants--laying the grounds for certain types of Islamization. This was a time most "minorities" were barely 20 to 50 thousand people, population-wise--but now number in the few millions.) So yes, the first coup did interrupt certain types of evil agenda that was planned ahead--in which the current administration is desperately trying to revise and adopt with mixed results. But does the current massive genocides that have occurred in various villages and farmlands in the MB translate to "conquered territory"? Not unless the current political structures persist without any sensible and wide-reaching re-structuring. The current status-quo empowers the central government with massive unchecked powers to simply invade and cause problems in areas or states that are supposed to be independent sovereign units on paper...but just on paper. So the same Arewa Northern government, pre-coup, can resurrect from the dead in this wider context and unleash the same demonic policies everyone is now forced to experience--not just so-called "northern minorities" this time. Evidently not every minority group ever wanted to be a part of "Northern Nigeria" in the first place pre-Independence-- hence the various Middle Belt movements. The whole ideal is to give a voice to minorities in a sane representative Region which is not perfectly captured by the current political reality. In my ideal restructured world, every single ethnic nationality sharing a commonality with other ethnic nationalities can confederate to create their sovereign regions. Scrap the Local Governments--go back to the natural boundaries before the artificial lines created by colonialism and twisted Nigerian governments after that. In this regard, Igede or Idoma or Tiv being ethnic Nationalities deserve a full blown Senator each to represent their ethnic nationalities and their region. No minority voice is then "hushed". Where the Tiv still get an advantage is still in their numbers. Especially if the region's constitution is designed to give an additional Senate district when the area exceeds a certain population threshold (pop 100k to 1mil == 1 Senate District; pop > 1mil. == another additional Senate District) etc., But this is just an ideal. Turning this into a reality in a Nigerian context...Your mileage may vary. But this was the original intention of the Middle Belt movement...to give a voice to minorities and form a common voting bloc with common interests. The current system promotes division, unfair practices and plain evil! 1 Like 1 Share |
