VO asked what I’m going to do, told her I’m going for my masters in Digital marketing in this school( I mentioned the name) then I saw she kept quiet, I started explaining that I’m going for the masters because it’s more relevant for my career, because I work as a Digital marketing executive now and I have come to realize that I don’t have some technical skill sets to give optimal value to my clients, so I need the skill set that I will obtain from this program. Then she cut in and asked who is my sponsor, I said two uncles, uncle A and uncle B. She didn’t ask what they do. Then she asked if I have travelled, I said yes, I’ve been to Russia and also had some flight layovers in some countries. she asked if I have any relative in the US, I said no not at all. Then she she asked what is my highest degree, I said I have masters in management from Russia, but it is not very relevant for my career right now, she asked who paid, i said i won a scholarship. Then she cut in again and asked when did I graduate, I just said this year 2021 (i graduated in June this year), then along the line (I don’t remember when she asked this, but it was during when I was explaining why I want to go for another masters that i have interest in this one because of my career and I have always had interest in digital marketing and even wrote my bachelors thesis on this area) she then said so why didn't i change the program i was doing in Russia, i said my school doesn't allow such, and they only offer a fixed study plan. Then she just brought out the blue slip.

What was the problem here? Can't one go for another masters again? especially because i currently work in this field and I actually want this degree. Is it my sponsors? pls advise

You have a visa from a country like russia so they won’t give you. It’s just like going to the embassy with Canada visa. She’s feeling like why don’t you go back to russia for what you want after all the educational system is also good. My opinion though

What I’d do if i were you is to renew my russian visa if it’s not valid again and apply for US study visa from there and attend the interview in Russia. You stand a better chance there and your explanation will be better understood there.

A couple of guys asked questions about the Duolingo Test.

1. For the faulty hardware: your camera or microphone might have not been functioning properly. You probably want to do a mock speaking test and video interview (or test these hardware on another app - say Zoom or Skype for example) before commencing any actual test. If this keeps happening in the actual test, then you could contact their customer service and explain what happened.

2. For the ID requirement: unfortunately, your national ID card will not be accepted. It has to be your traveling passport. The Duolingo test upholds similar identification standards with Toefl and IELTS.

there is nothing wrong in applying for just one school . you can tell them you. had a conversation with one of the senior lecturers from your dept and shared your credentials and purpose of studies with him ,he was impressed and asked you to apply and he would strongly be recommending you for admission in the school so because of that you applied to just that school to save yourself cost of application fee and evaluation charges .

VO stressed so much about him going on F1 and you too. I think that your brother not returning after his studies is a red flag.

He’s not in the same state as my school. But it doesn’t make sense now. So because my brother didn’t return does it mean I don’t intent to return. I even have a job offer waiting for when I get back

Nice attempt, I guess.

It’s sad you were denied.

However, in the next interview, you could “throw more light” on the curriculum at WPI, mention some professors and maybe some of the fanciest modules in that program, and what they will help you achieve career-wise.

In my opinion, you could have avoided mentioning that your parents were retirees. Although, I do not know if there’s a way you can retell this part in the next interview.

from my point of view I think the issue is the sponsorship . and on his own he has calculated the possibility of being able to pay back that loan if truly you will be coming back to Nigeria . for me I think collecting a lone for education from an international company when you want them to believe you will be coming back after your graduation is kind of a red flag . if you had a parent or family member sponsoring you it would have possibly been an approval .

I don't think he had issues with why he chose the school .but because of the student loan he will be accumulating and he could not explain how he would pay the loan when he comes back to Nigeria

secondly when you where asked what GA means you gave the wrong answer. if I where you I would take this route

Thank you, but the school in Russia didn’t offer the program I wanted and I want experiential learning. I need to reapply again, so how I do better explain?

UNTILL you can get a convincing story around why you want to do another masters after you just finished one I fear you may be refused if you applied again . if you had applied for a phd it would be reasonable .

My justification is that I started working in this field shortly after graduation, and I love what I do, the new program is also related to my undergraduate (marketing) and I have come to realize that I don’t have the required technical digital skills in my current job and that’s why I decided to get a degree in this specialization in order to position myself for higher roles in the field since it’s what I want to do in the longterm. The old masters doesn’t give me the specialized skills, is this not enough?

Sorry about the refusal Bro. Apply again and if asked how MPower will track you, let them know that you submitted your BVN, simple. Your Bank Verification Number is attached to your financial details so long as you are in Nigeria.

you see ehh there something we sometimes don't get . before choosing a masters program for the first time one has to decide if its the field he or she wants to work in. what the vo is thinking now is what is the guarantee that after going for this new masters you will not still say its not relevant....
I feel he suspects you just want to jakpa .you no even wait for a year or two before you apply for another masters . its begs a reason for lots of doubt. and you want to spend millions in another masters that will be sponsored by two uncles make you check am naw. that's why dey always ask what will this masters do for you? that question is deeper than we think it is ....

stick with one uncle if you can and if you, don't criticize you first masters rather find a relation ship between your first masters and the new on you intend to do. and I think you will be fine . because your story would now change that your current masters is a follow up on your previous one.and also I don't know if you have even had unto 2 years work experience either in the field of the master you have or the one you intend to pursue
